Gilad Shalit undergoes shrapnel removal surgery

Doctors successfully remove seven pieces of shrapnel from Shalit's hand. Hospital: Gilad likely won't need further surgeries

Gilad Shalit underwent a shrapnel removal surgery in his hand at the Rambam Medical Center in Haifa on Friday. He sustained the injury in the battle during which he was captured in 2006.

The surgery was performed by Prof. Shalom Shtahl, head of Rambam's Hand Surgery Department. Seven pieces of shrapnel were removed from Gilad's elbow and forearm, two of which were pressuring nerves. It is unknown whether permanent damage was caused to the hand.

Lasting two hours, the surgery was declared a success. Shalit will remain in hospital under observation and is scheduled to be discharged on Saturday.

Shalit has undergone a number of medical examinations following his return from captivity. As well as suffering from malnutrition and lack of exposure to sunlight, Shalit also suffered from wounds sustained during his capture.

Rambam Medical Center Spokesman David Ratner said that Gilad most likely will not require further surgeries.
