Readers outraged by animal testing    By Dan Benstur
1. This WRONG!
i am currently supporting UK animal rights activists to complain about the mass export of animals for vivisection and experimentation in the UK. I was worried to hear that Israel has ben involved in exporting animals for this purpose. Make no mistake, these animals die a terrible, painful and torturous death. Sometimes undergoing treatment for months - years!! This tragic and evil suffering must stop. i urge anyone reading this to check the facts and immediately back these anti-vivisectiion campaigns.

2. Vivisection
I am sorry - This is beyond me. There is so much that is wrong (and right ) in Israel, so many people suffering so many children wastefully killed. But what will get people all riled up ? Experiments on animals ! can you beleive it? Yes it's not pleasent some of it is wasteful and can be cruel, but the idea is to try and do good for humans. The point is that for every anti-vivisection activist there is one voice that is silent against man's inhumanity to man. When the question is asked about what you did to protest against what the government has done in your name, tell them about a cat you saved but not about how many people have been dispossesed or shot - brown people are obviously not fluffy enough for the blue-rinse brigade to care enough

3. animal testing
Israel has a unique institution which is an NGO, the Hevra le haganat hateva, the SPNI. They have been acting for over 50 years for the preservation of nature in Israel, and in the rest of the world as a consequence. They have often been, atr the forefront of what became later universal fights. Their action for the protection of animals, and the passage of a law about it in the Knesset was important, but, as is often the case in Israel, many laws are violated without punishment. The practice of animal testing is severely controlled in all advanced countries of the world, and all laws in Israel, religious and secular, prohibits the common practices in this field, but who enforces the law ? This leads to generalized corruption eventually. It is true that police is overwhelmed by its tasks with very little bugets, but citizens can help. In the same way as the law has allowed the creation of citizens with powers to address violations of pollution laws, there should be the creation of a corps of volunteers, under state control with powers to verify that wherever animals are used for any type of human use, they could control that the laws are not violated, and give fines if necessary. Please, all readers, contact your local branch of the SPNI and start lobbying for such a measure, it is the real mark of civilization, as seen in Jewish tradition.
