In the IDF we have secular, othodox, Haridi, Bedouin, Christians, male and female, straight and gay. The only requisite is that they are loyal to the State of Israel. That means carrying out the orders of the commanding officers. It doesn't sound if these kids would have been suitable anyway and they would not have been recruited. It affects there future emplyment chances as your army service is still taken as sign of your overall ability. Another reason to change to a regular army, and to end conscription.

The IDF of yesteryear was an army of conscience, purpose of mission and courage. In its current incarnation, it is a tool used for political whims much like in police states. It is no longer a people's army, and this will be Sharon's shameful legacy. In the meanwhile, without a strong IDF and the inclusion of the religious zionists, ( the best officers the IDF now has) all hell will break loose in Israel, and the terrorists will then have achieved their primary objective - the destruction of Israel. What's to be done?
