31. RE: UN asking for Israeli peacekeepers
faleen ,   US   (11.09.05)
Is this the same UN that rakes Israel over the coals every chance it gets and it basically run by arab countries? I feel that Israel attempts to keep peace every day of her existance IN SPITE of the UN.
32. Isn’t this something we’ve been waiting for?

I see this as both recognition of - and a price to be paid for – Israel’s growing but tentative acceptance as part of the family of nations. The move should be cautiously welcomed. I suggest that participation in UN peace-keeping duties be strictly on a voluntary basis. We also need to ensure that the IDF is shielded from the corruption and ill-discipline that seem to mar most UN operations, that volunteers are given the best available personal protection equipment, and that specialised or strategic equipment does not fall into the hands of those who would misuse it. I, for one, hope that this and any other initiative to integrate Israel further into the global community succeeds. We desperately need a counterweight to those who believe that Israel should dwell apart. What does Israel get out of this? Hopefully, skills and experience that may one day prove useful in our own environment. Lastly, something of a return to the days when “little Israel” was seen to be helping developing nations all over the world. (I can dream, can’t I?)
33. UN doesn't know what to do or how to do it

34. IDF and the UN
Neti ,   US   (11.15.05)
I do not trust the UN, but this actually may be good. The thing is that I think the IDF needs to reduce the number requested and be careful about who they send. It should be a volunteer thing, as most of those in the IDF are there to protect ISRAEL, not the UN's concept of peace. In other ways, this opens the door for the UN to have more authority and I do not like that. Hmmm. Perhaps not a good idea. I wish this were a bit more clear cut!

Would you rather send Hamas terrorists to kill innocent Tutsis? After all, they have the experience.
