1. A very laudable decision
Michael Steiner ,   EU   (03.12.06)
There's no question that the Shasnikim are deranged and not at all dissimilar to the Iranian mullahs (Ovadiyah even dresses the part). What is surprising though--in a very distressing way--is that these lunatics are likely to garner a handful of seats in the next election. What kind of people vote for racist, homophobic, sexist fundamentalist kooks?!?
2. Ignorent Comments against Shas
S Judah ,   London   (03.12.06)
The anti Shas brigade are out in force with ignorant comments. Why? What is it that so burns these people with hatred against Shas. A party that brought back pride, education, respect and a return to the glory of Sephardi traditions and religious belief, a party that fought against and highlighted institutinal discrimination against Sephardim. A party that helped tens upon tens of thousands that the state ignored. A party that has at its helm Rav Ovadia, the greatest halacic authority of the last 50 years, that has the support and wisdom of many great sages and Mekublim. These are great, great, achievements. The 300,000 thousand plus people from all walks of life, that accompanied the funeral of the Great Rosh Hamekubal, Hacham Kaduri, testify to the resurgance of Sephardi traditions. Far from disappearing like Shiuni, Shas has a great future and will only grow.
3. To Michael Steiner
Hiram ,   Tel Aviv   (03.12.06)
Michael, The poeple who will vote for Shas are the numerous people who have been raised up in the hatred of secularity and freedom. THere are unfortunately many of these in Israel. This is the price that we have to pay for not being able to separate religion from the state affairs, just like in some of the arab countries. Moslems pronise 72 virgin to their martyrs, Shas promise heaven to the voters who will allow this extremist guru to stay in power , both of them using " God " as back-up. You are correct . There is no difference between Mollahs who hang or jail homosexuals and Ovadia YOsef who believe that he has a diect and open line to God ( and for God's sake, he should remove the funny hat and the shades !!!!)
4. As we used to sing in summer camp...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (03.12.06)
"Put a nickel in the box and you'll be saved, Put a nickel in the box and you'll be saved, Put in a dollar sixty seven, and you'll surely go to heaven, Put a nickel in the box and you'll be saved!" Except it wasn't Jews we were commenting on back then!
5. A "Jewish Homeland"
Michael ,   Israel   (03.12.06)
Perhaps No 1 , Michael would prefer Islamic / Christian Parties to partake - rule Israel ??? This is meant to be a Jewish Homeland promised to Our Forefathers!! Perhaps you Michael feel more comfortable in the USA ?? Sorry ...even there the $$$$$ say "in G-d we trust"....How Does the Euro say.." in Arab Money and Oil we trust"? And look what is happening there ( France,England etc)!!! I wish Shas and other religious Parties much success, as I do not see other Political Parties / Figures capable saving our Jewish values and installing them in the upcoming generations to come!! I am not saying good Government should not be ...what I am saying is honest, just , economically sound and jewish social values should reign in the governing body!! Only then will true Harmony be found in all this our land and social groups and cultures in our land...perhaps even Peace !!
6. shas speach..
alan ,   nyc ny..   (03.12.06)
it is shameful that these statements are being made. i feel bad for the poeplewho had to stay and listen to it . they went for a lecture on torah and got shafted instead.
7. It's a democracy - and your kook may be my spiritual leader
Karen R ,   Maryland   (03.12.06)
Dear Michael Usually you're pretty on target, but this time you're not. Someone isn't a "kook" just because you disagree with them. Rabbi Yosef isn't dressing like a 'mullah," he's just dressing like his father and grandfather. And what he believes is what a lot of people believe. THE PROBLEM, however, is that he's using the mass media in a democracy in an improper way in an election. That is against the law. Same as the Shinui ad. If you saw the garbage that gets put on the air in the US during an election year, you would appreciate that Israel does have a censor to enforce common sense. You would also appreciate that, no matter how "kookie," everyone is entitled to his or her religious opinions.
8. Yala Shas !
Ezra ,   Canada   (03.14.06)
Shas is our answer to all the Steiners who despise us as being inferior Jews !
9. Re #1 Difference between Shas and Hamas
Steve ,   USA   (03.16.06)
B"H Michael, Shas wants people to reserve their place in the World to Come by building mikvot while Hamas wants Jews to build their own graves! There is a huge difference in the direction of spirituality. Spirituality when directed properly is a good thing. And, yes, performing G-d's commands in this world are what impact the next world. You were born and raised Jewish on account of the charitable actions of your parents.
