3. Arithmatic and Mandates.
Do the Math. Kadima (the unilateral withdraw party) got 28 seats. The social welfare parties (labor and pensioners) got 28 seats. If you include Meretz they got 33 seats (more than Kadima). None of those three support unilateral moves. The right (likud, NU, IB) got 32 seats. And then the chareidim (who generally oppose pullouts) got 18 seats. If we put Likud and IB in the Labor-Meretz column in agreeing to some sort of negotiated pullout, we have 48 in favor of bilateral withdrawls. As a result, I see a mandate for social welfare (as the chareidim and even NU will support most such programs) and for a negotiated settlement. Kadima is in the minority. They represent 23% of the vote. That's it. Olmert is grandstanding on the principle that if he says it often enough he can fool people into believing its true.
