Moussa Suwwan ,   Paris/France   (05.03.06)
In an Arab country suh a soldeir will be put in front of a firing squad. The best solution for the Israeli army and the Israeli government is to withdraw from the occupied territories, to establish a just and comprihensive peace...This will allowed the soldeirs to return to their beloved ones and the Palestinians to live as human beings.
2. #1 Occupied?
Nigel ,   Israel   (05.03.06)
The 'territories' are NOT occupied. See: http://palestinefacts.org/pf_1967to1991_territories_occupied_or_not.php and http://palestinefacts.org/index.php for the historical truth.
3. to #1
(05.03.06)
The best solution for the Palestinians and the Palestinian government is to stop terrorism and to establish a just and comprehensive peace...This will allow the soldiers to return to their beloved ones and the Palestinians to live as human beings. You see, it works both ways.
4. #1 firing squad
peter ,   amsterdam, NL   (05.03.06)
Quote: "In an Arab country such a soldier will be put in front of a firing squad." That's the difference between a democracy and a dictatorship-thanks for confirming that. The rest of your post contradicts this 1st sentence-an Arab country would never withdraw and every officer stating a different opinion would be shot. Examples are Morocco(Spanish Sahara), Syria(Lebanon) and Iraq(Kuwait). Seems Israel is doing some things right.

What barbarian arab laws have to do with Israeli soldier?

another one who thinks he knows whats best for Israel why dont you just keep out of our internal issues?
7. Soldier refuses to shake Halutz's hand
ger ,   Raanana, Israel   (05.03.06)
No matter what lies behind his thinking, this is disrespect for his and his country's chief commanding officer. The soldier should be demoted in rank for this act of insubordination, and, if he intended to become an officer, he should be denied the opportunity.

Just because France is in the habit of surrendering, doesn't mean every other country needs to follow suit.
9. response #1
RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (05.03.06)
Yes, if the Israelis would stop "occupying" the territories, the Arabs there would live wonderfully, under the enlightened government of the PLO or Hamas or probably even worse. Everywhere where Arabs live under Arab rule, it's so wonderful. Morocco, Algeria, Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Saudir Arabia, etc. etc. etc. are some of the world's most enlightened, wonderful, thriving, free and prosperous societies. Come to think of it, there aren't enough Arab states in the world--we need a 22nd. That way there could be even more oil blackmail and terrorism. Are there any other helpful exports that I forgot?
10. All Honor To Sgt. Dayan!
Jay ,   LA, USA   (05.03.06)
10 more like him and Israel could be saved.
11. Court martial followed by a dishonorable discharge
Michael Steiner   (05.03.06)
is the only fitting punishment. Israel can't have "soldiers" who disrespect its institutions and the democratic will of its people. Dan Halutz is this little squeak's commander--like it or not--and in an army you do NOT diss your commander.
12. answer to 8 & 9 the soldeir
moussa Suwwan ,   Paris/France   (05.03.06)
No one is talking about surrender, we talk about a just and comprehensive peace in the interest of the two people. Franc'es past has nothing to do with this dramatic situation, on the contrary they are doing their best to help both sides to reach a pacific solution. I am not certain that the Palestinians have oil and they do not intend to blakmail any one. They struggle for their freedom; that is honourable. i already wrote that Hamas must choose pragmatism and recognise all the documents that have been signed by the formerPalestinian government. I still believe that you should work for peace and not for hatred and bloodshed. shalom

david ,   miami usa   (05.03.06)
quote" in an arab country such a soldier would be put in front of a firing squad" - well, actually: in an arab country such a general would be put infront of a firing squad. no arab country would tolerate what he and olmert did.

dear moussa if the queen had balls she'd be king right.... where the jews oocupiers and instigated the murders of the hebron jewish community in 1929? were the jews occupiers and instigated the war of attrition against them in the 1930's? were the jews occupiers and instigated the arab community to support the mufti and hitler in his war againt the jews in the 40's? were the jews occupiers when the united nations voted on partition with a state for the jews and a state for the palestinians and then started a war against them in 1948? were the jews occupiers when fellachim raided her border communities throughout the 1950's? were the jews occupiers when Fatach was founded in 1964 and her first operational command was given and carrie out to attach jewish targets?.....a full 3 YEARS before the 6 day war! don't even get me started with the attacks on civillians, airlines synagogues, day care centers, schools, jcc's, an old man in a wheel chair being thrown off a ship at sea with the only crime of these people is that they were JEWS! please lets people honest....the reality of the arab world/culture today is one that embraces death....echews responsibility....respects the civil rights of noone....your governments are despotic, your cultures educate their children to openly hate jews..... life is about choice....it appears that the predominat culture in the arab world is self assured destruction...this is no critical thought....there is no societal self reflection......there is only one thing when things don't go Right BLAME THE JEWS! if you don't like your life then maybe its time to look in the mirror
18. #12 Moussa...
Yonatan ,   USA   (05.03.06)
Just the fact that you think the Palestinians "struggle for freedom" is honorable, suggests you have a warped view of what honor is. France (specifically Chirac) has done nothing to help, and in fact has assisted in the continuation of this problem. Try to remember Israel does not teach her children in school to hate like the hamas schools do. The Palestinians perpetuate this hate, not the Israelis.
19. A soldier with guts.
jason white ,   afula,israel   (05.03.06)
He was right not to dirty his hand by shaking halutz's paw. This is one ceremony ehud omelet's sons will never attend!

22. National hero soldier
Josh ,   Jerusalem   (05.03.06)
This guy halutz got his job only because Sharon's family and lawyers liked him. The real Chief was removed by Sharon's family and Sharon's son is ready for jail, and Sharon himself was long forgotten (where is he now?).

Talkback here at Ynet gives a privileged insight into the sick minds of fascist psychopaths...while they appear to be the majority on Talkback, they are fortunately the deviants within the wider society

idiots :-)
27. I got your discharge swinging
Yoel Ariel ,   US   (05.03.06)
Israel cannot have institutions that disrespect it's citizens. Send the pipsquesk clerk Halutz((in name only)) back to his ass kissing duties. Sgt.Dayan was selected as one of the IDF's top 100 soldiers. He is not an automaton or a slave, nor a hired servant. He gave Kadima's handpicked Halutz exactly the respect he has earned.
28. Israel is a free country
Jenny ,   NYC   (05.03.06)
thus he can voice his opinion by making a symbolic gesture. He should not be court-martialed or demoted for simply refusing to shake someone's hand. It's not like he didn't obey a superior during training or during an operation. He was merely expressing his opinion through a gesture and I applaud him. Many of us would feel the same way if our grandfther's house had been destroyed by a bulldozer. If Mike Bloomberg had my grandfather's house destroyed, I wouldn't shake his hand either. This man is obviously an excellent soldier to be included in that honor ceremony in the first place, so kudos to him!
