1. A national disgrace!!
Art ,   Sydney, Australia   (05.09.06)
Corruption seems to be a huge prob in Israel, third in line behind terrorism and poverty. It must be addressed urgently!! The fact that Israel is ranked so low on the democracy index is a national disgrace, especially since we Jews were the people that invented democracy AND Israel always likes to pride itself on being a beacon of freedom and democracy in the mid east. This claim is starting to sound hollow! Israel, you must pull up your socks. I know that there are many other probs you must deal with, but don't underestimate this one: it can destroy a society!
2. so much for only democracy

5. It Has NOTHING To Do With Race
Yishai Kohen ,   YeShA, Israel   (05.09.06)
It is PURELY because this 5th column is a cancer in our midst- actively and passively supporting our enemies. This is why we do feel this way about the Arabs and don't feel this way about the Druze. It's really quite simple.
6. insubordination
RobertK ,   Jerusalem   (05.09.06)
"However, a large decline was seen in the overwhelming objection to insubordination due to ideology. This time around 58 percent said they objected to such insubordination compared to 70 percent in last year's survey." Why is this a decline? The government encourages you to build a community in the place and lets you and your children and your grandchildren live there and develop it, and make your lives there, for about thirty years. One day thousands of soldiers show up to throw you out and pulverize the community to dust. Don't show any insubordination! Throw flowers at the soldiers and bake cakes for them.
7. Racist always make

8. To #1
Francois ,   Paris   (05.09.06)
In most European countries, Government agencies are funding Muslims immigrants who go back in their birth country and you don't care about that. This is the real disgrace.
9. I'm most definitely not one of the 62%, but after decades of
Judith ,   Haifa   (05.09.06)
Arab hatred why is everyone so surprised. Although it is worrying, there is a context to this phenomenon. I myself have moved from left to center since the last terrorist "Intifada", and the seemingly hopelessness of the peace process and developments in the Pal territories. People in this country are just fed up, and to change this, the Pals must make a great change in their attitude, move toward real (not fake like Saadat and his swastika tie) peace. There is such a gulf of mistrust between the Israelis and Pals and Arabs in general. If there is a REAL acceptance of Jews in the ME, I am sure that this bad sentiment and "decline in democracy index" will decrease.
10. Of course this is not racist
benjie ,   new york, ny   (05.09.06)
"This is why we do feel this way about the Arabs and don't feel this way about the Druze" Did Hitler also mention "good jews" and "bad jews"?
11. Low on the democracy index ??? !!!
Boaz ,   Ramat Gan, Israel   (05.09.06)
With both left, right and center talk about the demographic threat, Hamas leads the PA, Iran’s threats of annihilation, The bitter memories of the Palestinian mass murder campaign still very very fresh. And trust between Jews and Arabs citizens still very low due to the October 2000 riots, Is it really that much of a surprise that these are the results? And what do they mean encourage? Encourage financially and through consent, or by any means possible, i. e. force? There is a world of a difference between the two. (another factor is how much a priority is it over other issues like corruption and poverty) Are NZ and Finland facing security problems and existential threats as we do? Exactly how does the democracy index calculate the different circumstances each society and country is in? And how does it rank the view that Israel should have never existed? Is it just one view out many, or do the makers of this index recognize it for the blatant racism that it is?
12. benjie; How about Arab racism and intolerance?
Daisy ,   USA   (05.09.06)
Jews are tolerant but realize that they will never have peace with the Arabs who want to murder them and steal their homeland. Arabs are the most intolerant bigots that exist. As a Catholic women I would rather live under Jewish rule than Arab rule anyday.
13. Rabbi Kahane was ahead of his time, 2 infitadas show that.

14. who are they to decide what democracy is??!!
ariel ,   jerusalem israel   (05.09.06)
how dare this group decide that what people think is un democatic. whats wrong with wanting arabs to leave? the majority wants it! i think its un democatic to lt them stay. if youre going to tell me that jews can be expeled from their homes because there is a majority of people wanting them out then why not do the same for them?? i dont understand where these peoples values come from! pure democracy is doing the will of the people
15. #12 dear daisy
benjie ,   new york, ny   (05.09.06)
palestinian dislike jews because of occupation/apartheid. It is like telling black slaves you are intolerant, bigoted toward your white masters. you are welcome to live whereever you want. some people prefered to move to south africe during apartheid. they did not had concious humanity of suffering especially if they are of other race.

it seams you forgot that those Arabs their are in their birth country .... and why France can not send it's Arabs citizens back till now ?
17. There is a simpler solution to the problem.
Tahl ,   Israel   (05.09.06)
One cannot ignore the demographic calamity that awaits Israel in the next generations, with the arab percentage of the population steadily growing and finally outnumbering the Jewish percentage. This would mean the end of Israel as the Jewish homeland, a situation we cannot afford to have. But the solution to this, is not to make the arabs emigrate out of Israel. This would deem us as a racist state, and undermine our reputation in the world. The solution should be much simpler: to change the boundaries of Israel with the future Palestinian state, so that the Palestinian state would include most of the arab towns and villages which are today in Israel proper. This would have many advantages: 1. The arabs in these territories would have a Palestinian nationality instead of Israeli - thus dropping the percentage of arab-Israeli citizens in Israel, thus alleviating the demographic danger of arabs outnumbering Jews in Israel. 2. In exchange for the sacrifice of this land given to the Palestinian state, Israel could legitimately annex territories from the west bank with large Jewish population - such as Ariel, Efrat, Maale Edumim, Jordan Valley, etc. 3. Best of all - there is no racism here, there is no hideous "transfer" idea - as the arabs in these territories are not moving anywhere! They get to keep their own homes and lands! They simply exchange their nationality. They have always identified with their Palestinian brothers, they have always viewed themselves as Palestinians, now they can finally be an integral part of their homeland Palestine. Again - without being uprooted! The "racist" Israeli sovreignty is removed from their heads, and exchanged with the Palestinian sovreignty they have always yearned for. 4. All of the problems such as the right of return, or marriages of arab-Israelis with Palestinians who cannot enter Israel - are now solved. 5. The settlement makes Israel enjoy peace with its Arab neighbors, and international support, making its economy blossom. 6. The future Palestinian state enjoys new citizens which know something about being a modern country, a democracy, with good economy, which keeps human rights, much more so than what the Pal. Aurhority has been until now. This will help them turn into a successful, modern, hospitable country. Ultimately - everyone gains. Well, except for the audacious Arab MK's. I can live with that.
18. Let's send them all to Madagascar
Latrina Goldfarb   (05.09.06)
It was tried once before, but the government found a more economical way to deal with citizens they did not want amongst the true race. Have we not learned anything from Yom HaShoa?
19. real peace
human   (05.09.06)
9# Judith We want real peace. Judith, the intifadah started because the Israli government did not want peace. Why occupation must still go? Why the settllers in occupied terroteries must still stealing the land? Why not to bring them back? Why the Palestinian have not the right to live in equal like others? You are reading all this talkbacks, what you will find? there no justification in the Israelis reaction. No body talk about the bad things happend in the checkpoints in West bank. You mention Saadat but you did not mention why the Israelis killed abu ali mustafa in his office. We must stop killing each other and live equal here. Then peace will come.
20. We will not leave. We are the most indigenous people to
Nidal ,   East Jerusalem   (05.09.06)
this land...! We have been here since thousands of years. Our roots go as far as the Phoneician Canaanites. If some wants to leave, let it be those Jews who are doing all their best to prove that their DNA is like ours!!! Now get lost!
21. Tells alot about the peacfull Jewish Israeli
atmawi ,   Historic Palestine   (05.09.06)
People. If you do not accept others, then you are a racist. If you occupy the land of others, then defenetly you are not a democratic state, nor you are a civilized people.
22. Democracy a la carte
(05.09.06)
like the french say ... a la carte ... it means the big countries who speaks all the time about Democracy and humanrights ... they violate Democracy and humanrights and we saw this in America it self ... when they wanted to invade Irak they used the word Democracy to serve then in this matter and we saw that there is no Democracy in Irak till now and it will never be .... they speak all the time about humanrights and we saw all what's happend and still in the prison of Abu Gharib ... and this is only what we could see ... so we can imagin what we didn't see till now ... why they tested the democracy in this poll with such a racist question .... it would much more effectiv if they would test the people with question about the government to show the real Democracy ... or the Government in Israel is a forbiden zone to be under test .... the Governments use the word Democracy according to their interest .... when the Palistinians chosen Hamss by their free will .... the world punished them for their democracy ... whenever when the Israelians chosen Mr. Sharon as PM after a history full of blood of inocent people ... the Americans supported him ... there is allway tow scales for each issue according to the interest of each government .... real democracy you find in a very few countries like Switzerland , Sweden , Denemark and so ... most of the Americans announced that they are against the war in Irak ... did the government agreed with them ? ... in england the same thing .... there is kind of Democracy which let the people to say whatever they want .... no problem ... but who listen ... only God .... smile .... shalom Democracy
23. benjie you are moronic, arabs hate jews b/c they exist..
Amsellem, ,   Israel   (05.09.06)
i bet you think if israel leaves JUDEA(note that it is named after its rightful owners, namely JEWS) and Samaria that the arabs will come rushing to hug and kiss jews, "occupation"(you cant occupy your homeland, lets not forget, mo-HAM-head is the original occupier) or not the arabs will always want to kill jews, now dont say i didnt warn you when you get blown to peices in your cozy NY home...
24. Phoneician Canaanites? (ROFL)
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (05.09.06)
Get poor Nidal a history book. Canaanites were indigenous to Israel but it is well documented that the Canaanites were conquered by, and assimilated into, Israel -- NOT Arabs, making Israel/Jews, NOT Arabs, the people indigenous to Israel. Say, MAYBE that's why it's known in the history books as Israel and Judea instead of Arabia. Phoenicians, by contrast, were colonists - non-Semitic occupiers - of Greek descent, probably by way of Thera, who settled in the northern Sinai near the Egyptian delta, in Lebanon-Syria and in Philistia (Gaza) -- NOT Israel, where they were repulsed by King David. So, if Nidal is right about his Greek, not Semitic or Arabic, ancestry, then he proves that he is the Greek colonialist occupier, permitted to expand out of Lebanon and Philistia (Gaza) to squat in Judea (!) by the Roman occupiers, who renamed it "Palestine." He corroborates that the Arab controlled areas are Arab-occupations of Yerushalayim, Judea and Israel. Paqid 16, The Netzarim Israeli Orthodox Jew www.netzarim.co.il
25. Historic Palestine? (ROFL)
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (05.09.06)
Don't Arabs get any education at all in history besides their own propaganda? "Palestine," referring to the previous kingdom of Israel and Judah that had absorbed the Canaanites to become the indigenous kingdom, didn't come into existence until "decreed" by the Roman occupiers in 135 C.E. By then, Israel had already been the only indigenous sovereign since it was conquered by Yehoshua Ben-Nun ca. B.C.E. 1427. So, this was Israel and Judah (Judea) some 1,562 years before Roman-occupiers renamed it "Palestine" and allowed Greek colonialists and Arabic foreigners to squat and occupy our land. Today, they are the Arab occupiers of Biblical Shekhem (Romans renamed to Neopolis after the Roman emperor, Arabized to "Nablus"), Beit Lekhem (Bethlehem), Jerusalem, etc. "Palestine," referring to Syrian-Philistia or today's Gaza, is relevant to Syria and Gaza, not Israel. Zvi ,   Los Angeles USA   (05.09.06)
Let us not sit in judgement against the common wisdom of the Israeli public which has suffered suicide bombings without end and which hears Arab MKs berate Israel and Zionism I STAND WITH THE JEWS OF THE JEWISH STATE as would Zev Herzl This State was founded for the oppressed Jewish People and for no one else It is the will of G-d that we be in Eretz Yisrael and we need Medinat Yisrael to protect that right I trust above all the IDF
27. #21, let us talk about not accepting
Michael   (05.09.06)
The arabs are the first to bring in the arrogant concept of not recognizing other human beings. 2) you've attacked us. Definition you sent armies to kill every jew. Because you have a notion that you have he right to kill. If that isn't racism. Then there is no racism in the world. You are trying to kill us and sabotage our existence and you are shocked that we don't like you because of your sinister ways. Get a realty check
28. Democracy demands I host my killers in my home?
Paqid Yirmeyahu ,   Ra'anana, Israel   (05.09.06)
Muslims kill those around them everywhere, not just here. When they don't have "infidels" to kill, they resort to killing each other. Demanding that those who are literally dying to extirpate you, get out of your house isn't racist by any stretch of the imagination. That Israel has citizens of all races and Judaism admits those of all races proves, to everyone but raging misojudaic propagandists, that race plays no part in this. It's about survival against an implacable enemy intractably dedicated to annihilating the Jewish State from the Middle East. It's also about Muslims implacably killing to destabilize "infidel" and "crusader" (not just "Zionist") "regimes" in order to further their dream of a world caliphate. As much as Jews have contributed to the world, however, anyone who thinks that Jews or Israel invented democracy needs to revisit the history of democracy. Israel, the people, thrived for 1581 years before democracy was finally invented (from ca. B.C.E. 1921, when Yaaqov became Yisraeil, patriarch over his twelve sons, to the world's first democracy, Hellenist Sparta, in B.C.E. 340).

Racists like YOU are used to judge others ,without any will for understanding reasons that lead to a certain position, just tagging them. Look in the mirror ,you one!
30. Eretz Israel and Arabs
kate ,   england   (05.09.06)
As there are at least 22 surrounding Arab lands, some a stones throw from Israel, I realyy can't understand why any Arab would want to stay in Israel, especially religious Arabs who you'd think would want to live near mecca, Saudi being 100% muslim with their prime religious place. Israel is now smaller than Wales (UK). Israel needs to believe in its G-d given covenants especially the land covenant - the birthpangs really did start after the baby (Israel) was born.
