1. She is right! He needs a Ping Pong Partner.
Alan ,   SA   (05.14.06)
2. Extremely Serious Threat
Marcel ,   Florida   (05.14.06)
Most of European Jewery ignored the plans laid out in Mein Kampf and many today in Israel hope that ignoring Ahmadinejads clearly laid out agenda will bring positive results. http://www.jnewswire.com/article/902
3. Response is needed
Brod ,   Marshall, USA   (05.14.06)
Brenda Shefer is wrong to suggest that Israel should not respond to Iran's threat. In the face of a nuke threat from a terrorist Islamist State like Iran, Israel must confront the enemy head on. In fact, Israel must respond to any threat to her existence.
4. Final Termination letter to Ahmad is needed now!
nero ,   nyc   (05.14.06)
5. Ahmadinejad is hoping to get Israel to respond in his level
Caligula's Horse ,   Solomon's Stables   (05.14.06)
He doesnt really want to nuke Israel, he wants to get Israeli leaders to make agressive threats so he can get the UN to disarm Israel of nukes, then pave the way for a conventional attack. Dont forget that Israel's nuclear power is undeclared so basicly there is nothing he can do unless he can prove it in our talk, and this is what he wants to achieve. He isnt some stupid monkey, there is a plan behind his Nazi rethoric, even though he believes it himself. I mean, if Iran wants to claim its nuclear power is for peace, then why release militaristic messages about the oblitiration of other countries? Think about it.
6. She's right
Antonio ,   Haifa   (05.14.06)
Because there is really nothing to respond to. Israel need to be ready to face any threat, not comment on any idiocy the Iranians are spouting at the moment.
7. oh really?
Mahmoud Ahmadinejad ,   Iran   (05.14.06)
i don't have any bombs... stop insulting me
8. #2 your right
jason ,   usa   (05.14.06)
iran is like a bully lying to get what they want and threaten and trying to challenge israel into a fight(a war) making hostile comments is a sigh for a war
9. Only a secular binational israel can have peace
qasim ,   USA   (05.14.06)
People must not forget that the golden age for Judaism was in moslem spain. Jews were accepted and did very well is many moslem countries when their kin were butchered in europe. This proves that moslems don't have an innate hatred for jews and anti-semitism was never a major problem in the arab countries. The conflict now is a political one precipitated by the establishment of Israel as a colonial western satellite state at the expense of many millions of palestinians who now live in refugee camps. Only when those refugess are allowed back, peace will prevail. The moslem world will accept the jews but not a jewish state. Therefore, only a binational state in palestine where jews and arab share govertment can have peace. Israel must chose between a jewish state in eternal conflict with its neighbours and a secular binational state which lives in peace
10. Agreed no verbal response is needed.
Vorax   (05.14.06)
But factual response is needed. - clear statement on government foregin policy priorities - peace, trade agreements, defensive military doctrine, international collaboration on technology/healthcare, humanitarian aid etc. - explanations (given by gov. spokesmen) that political islam is reactionary dangerous ideology, which must be confronted at all levels - strategic level - declaratoin of involvement in anti-terrorism, activity, not specifying details - beefing-up army's technical base - tactical level - daring army and covert operations aimed at high-level terrorist command/control/finances - operational level - military pressure on active enemy forces (hamas, hezbollah) - intelligence, counter-intelligence - secret service ops, "leaks" in media aimed at desinformation on army technical capabilities, exercises, inelligence and allies activity - counter-propaganda work aimed at discrediting enemy ideology (thanks everybody for paricipation) All that is in place and rolling.
11. response to #3 - Brod
Azriel ,   Toronto   (05.14.06)
No one says that Israel should play down the Irani threat, but Israel should NOT play his game and turn this into a regional conflict, isolated from the rest of the world. His recent statements that "Iran is ready to negotiate with every country except Israel" is an attempt to do just that.
12. #9 Imperialism
Logic ,   Israel   (05.14.06)
"The moslem world will accept the jews but not a jewish state." Sounds like Arab/ Muslim imperialism to me. No state for the Jews. No state for the Kurds. No state for any minority nation with rights to self-determination. By the way, I bet you're sitting on Shawnee or Cherokee land right now, so don't be hypocritical.
13. She is probably mostly wrong
sk ,   USA   (05.14.06)
Monkey Boy has the Security Council locked up regardless of the role of Israel. There is no evidence that China or the Soviet Union (oops! I meant Russia) will allow a Chapter 7 resolution (a so-called "mandatory" one). What he is doing is continuing to issue outrageous statements about Israel so as to desensitize listeners. He is also asserting that Israelis are a bunch of cowards and paper tigers. Shefer is no doubt right that Israel's current comments are self-defeating. But when Israel does nothing (as with the Scud attacks in Gulf War I), it is perceived as cowardly and weak. Wouldn't more assertive comments, as in, "Iran, which could not defeat Iraq after years of trying -- Iraq, the country that fell to the US in a few days -- is in no position to threaten Israel. If Iran wants to test its military prowess against Israel, all it needs to do is declare a war; if it continues to threaten us, we will assume that it has declared such a war and destroy the Iranian war-making capability along with the leadership."

Alan ,   SA   (05.14.06)
15. A note to Quasim #9
Antidhimmi ,   usa   (05.15.06)
Dhimmi- a subject people living under Islam and required to humiliate themselves under Sharia Law and to pay the Jizhhya, often a confiscatory special tax placed on non-Muslims. Dhimmi at various times and places were not allowed to ride horses, used special saddles, wore special clothes, could not testify against a Muslim and could not build residences higher than those of Muslims and faced death if they defamed the Muslim faith.. In return for submission they were permitted to live unless the Muslims decided against it. During the so-called golden age in Spain, Jews weree subject to many of these restrictions and the Rambam left because of them. There was no golden age only Muslim domination, cruelty and oppression. They were the true racists.
16. Map errors for Palestine
Chris ,   New Jersey, USA   (05.15.06)
Even if Palestine were to be established as a nation, how is this supposed to work if one part is Gaza and the other the West Bank with Iraeli land in the middle? The most basic of map reading is being ignored.
17. proof of seriousness: destroy hezbollah
sk ,   USA   (05.14.06)
Why exactly is Merlot cointinuing to allow Katyusha rockets controlled by Hezbollah in Lebanon? These will indeed be used if Iran picks a fight with the West, and there mere existance in Lebanon makes Israel look like both a sitting duck and a paper tiger. Israel can communiate seriousness by decapitating Hezbollah and destroying the missiles. It needs to happen anyway; if not now, when? And no, nothing Israel does is relevant to what the Security Council will do.
18. # 13 sk
yakov shani ,   afula   (05.15.06)
You are predicting. This man is a psychopath, unpredictable therefor dangerous. All people who get religion on the brain are psychos to some degree, not all are dangerous, some are pleasantly silly, others are slightly off kilter, all are illogical ergo unpredictable. You know as well as I do that the powers in DC have a team of psychologists watching this guy 24/7, every word and ever action. Decision time will come based on professional analysis, don't be too trigger happy with predictions.
19. Another outcome
Mike ,   Atlanta, USA   (05.15.06)
Iran might screw up the launch and hit an Israeli-Arab town. Then Lieberman becomes less necessary. I can see the left-wing strategy unfolding now...
20. To Qasim
Mike ,   Atlanta, USA   (05.15.06)
For now, eternal conflict yields pretty good return on equity for many of us (especially in the USA). I just wish oil wouldn't remain so pricey.
21. Give him Ex-Lax, he will be an inch high tomorrow.

22. israel shout as loud as possible about iran's threats
debra ,   usa   (05.15.06)
it was stirring to hear peres speak back to the iranian hitler. if bush is going to move against iran militarily, it's important americans know israel is in danger and will fight back and needs the help of america. silence on israel's part will be misconstrued outside israel that there is no real perceived threat. the more we hear from israel the better. let us know what is happening in israel in regard to the iranian madman. words from israel will be persuasive to the white house and the american people to be at israel's side in the coming confrontation. the six million holocaust victims couldn't shout back at hitler and alert the world to their peril----israel can.
23. Israel should respond to every provocation from Iran
(05.15.06)
What does everyone think will happen, by hiding under your bedsheet with the pillow over your head, peace? Hiding never made the Jews invisible to Hitler! Those Jews were not invisible. Individuals who will not stand up to bullies and fight back will be slaughtered. I see a lot of let's talk about this, let's not get to carried away voicing anything about a conflict with Iran. People might die if we go to war. It's our people's lives at stake, don't voice your opinion, my family member might be killed in a conflict. On a long enough time line, we are all going to die. It's how you die that says a lot about your life. I'd rather die fighting, like every organism on the planet, that has a spine. Israel can't hide under a pillow from Iran. They will have to be dealt with. It should be made very clear that Nuclear Weapons will be used by Israel against Iran, and any Muslim nation supporting their provocations. Israel owes these leppers nothing less.
24. Perpetuating myth of Muslim tolerance
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (05.15.06)
qasim (#9) claims, "People must not forget that the golden age for Judaism was in moslem spain. Jews were accepted and did very well is many moslem countries when their kin were butchered in europe. This proves that moslems don't have an innate hatred for jews and anti-semitism was never a major problem in the arab countries." This myth of the "golden age" overstates the historic truth. There was, indeed, a period of many years of coexistence, but only as second class citizens under Moslem rule. But, as ever, Moslem tolerance alternated with Moslem INtolerance. Norman Stillman's documentary history "The Jews of Arab Lands", for example, states on page 61, "By 1172, almost all of Islamic Spain came under the control of the Almohads, fanatic sectarian Berbers from the Ante Atlas mountains of Morocco. The Almohads tolerated neither Jews nor Christians within their empire. There were mass conversions of Jews to Islam. Many fled over the frontier into Christian Spain, while others made their way to the more tolerant Muslim East. Ayyubid Egypt and Syria offered a haven to Andalusian refugees. Jewish life in the little that was left of Islamic Spain ceased to exist altogether." Maimonides himself was among those who fled such Muslim intolerance.
25. #18 (yakov)
sk ,   USA   (05.15.06)
Hi Yakov. I see my comments as a difference of opinion with Brenda Shefer, who seems to be doing quite a bit of predicting herself. The idea that what Russia and China do in the SC depends on Israel just cannot be taken seriously. I don't agree that Ahmadinijad is a psychopath. Even if he is, I do not see what's wrong with publicly ridiculing him. It would be hard to think of a more pro-Israel situation than Iran trying to attack Israel, as Iran would be defeated. If Monkey Boy is humiliated the regime might well fall, because it is already hated. Or so I think.
26. #2 I hope it's not too late.
D- ,   San Diego, USA   (05.15.06)
Who knows, with our status-quo leaders, laissez-faire professional "experts", liberal media and our gullible hands-off "free" polulations, Iran & the rest of the Muslim extremists have had plenty of time to prepare to do anything to us by now.
28. Critical Thought
Diaspora ,   Irvine,Ca   (05.15.06)
I am an atheist Iranian living in California who is sick and tired of the rhetoric of both regimes and all the arguements. Regarding Iran, I am sick of the current state of affairs in Iran, where the economy is terrible. 65% of Iranians are young, and the unemployment rate is above 20%. This bastard of a regime is also infringing of civil liberties, and creates institutionalize misogyny. At the same time, I am sick and tired of the monarchist, pro-shah, right-wing Iranians who conjure up images of the grandiose Persian Civilization to combat the "primitive" nature of the Islamic Republic today. All historical claims to authenticity are dangerous. Next, I am sick of Israel from the beginning. Israel's propaganda campaign has done a great job of making Israel both the victim and the occupier. The real Israeli people are sick and tired of violence. The real Palestinian people are sick and tired of violence. FREE PALESTINE NOW! FREE ISRAEL NOW! I am sick of the Israeli gov painting Ahmadinejad as the next Hitler. No, he's just another leader in the IRI, which is nowhere near a saint, nor nowhere near the demon that hitler was. So stop these holocaust allusions. This is a different situation. Finkelstein's Beyond Chutzpah serves as a good foundation for carrying an arguement like this.
29. Hypocrisy
Veritas ,   Zion   (05.15.06)
Israel needs to stop pointing the finger. They have killed more people in the past 10 years than Iran has. They ALREADY HAVE nukes. They haven't signed onto NPT. Be careful, because truth is the first casualty
30. Secular Binational State
Ron ,   America   (05.15.06)
Whatsa matter, you need Jews to have a secular state? what about the rest of your secular all inclusive states ?
