3. good move, good article
not since Golda has Israel had a PM with the kind of charm foreign audiences like... Bibi came off as unstable, Barak as arrogant and even Rabin z"l as untrusting and standoffish... but polict and PR are too different things so Barnea is right that the proof will be in the delivery

Golda charm ? It will take me the rest of my life to work that one out. She was a conniving meddling wheel dealing devil who would have easily found her place and soulmates in Chicago circa 1930. That in no way detracts from her contribution, but charm and she do not match.

6. #5 I said foreign audiences
yaacov, you obviously knew the woman better than I (no aspersions cast)... but foreign audiences enjoyed her bruskness and bluntness... i guess its the masochism of diaspora Jews. actually, the one time I met her she actually did seem a bit charming, even gracious.

7. most disturbing
What is the most disturbing issue in this piece?
The statement that Israel has no military option against Iran in return for tacit support for convergence.
It is true US support has never been 100%. Rabin as Ambassador had great difficulties with Nixon until Israel offered to come to the aide of Jordan by mobilizing against a Syrian invasion of Jordan. The quid and the pro were not invented yesterday.
Also Rice et al as reported in this article were right to bring valid concerns to the fore. Hamas percieved Gaza as a defeat. How is this withdrawal different from the previous one on the issue of this perception which is a bad precident?
Olmert et al ought to chew long and hard on the issues that were raised against the plan.
That said, kol hakavod for a very good speech in the hallowed halls of Congress.

9. Article in Washington post 26th July 2006
"That's how this campaign is different in a major way from the last one," Barnea said. "From the beginning, Israel didn't want to conquer Lebanon or force Hezbollah to surrender, because it knew it couldn't get that. But it wanted the world to understand that the problem is so hard that they need to intervene, and you can't get the attention of the world unless you start to bomb civilians."
