Palestinians are in Israeli detention for planning, and sometimes executing, terror attacks for the purpose of killing as many innocent people as possible. There are many Palestinians who live in Israel, and some even serve in the Israeli government. The reason evades me why Jews cannot live alongside the Palestinians as well. I understand that Palestinians would be upset that these communities are Israeli in the midst of their own territory, but this kidnapping seems to be for no reason other than the fact that the poor guy is Jewish.

The Palestinian combatants were not in breach of the Geneva Conventions in attacking the Israeli border post since Israel was and remains engaged in military operations against Gaza. Taking a prisoner of war is to be commended - at least they didn't kill him when he surrended. Prisoner swaps are also quite common in the history of warfare. The Israeli government's refusal to negotiate his release, at least in return for the release of Palestinian children, is evil.

I disagree with your analysis strongly. Let's face reality, Israel has been in a constant war with the Arabs since prior to 48. The latest Intifada is simply an adjunct of this conflict to rid the M.E. of its Jews. Those who hitchhike should have been aware of the danger...and potential costs. (Israel had issued warnings previously and again has come out with advice-*see latest articles in paper). Whether Marshal Law would have aided, is problematic. Israel must go into a siege mentality and tighten up it's internal functions. I have always thought capital punishment should be the rule, not the exception. I am for incarceration of terrorists, similar to here in Calif. and Arizone (25-to life/prisons in the desert with no air-conditioning or other amenities). I am against the Road Map (it should be shelved). I am against a 2 state solution. But I am for some autonomy. Or as Abba Eban once said, there may just be no viable solution to this conflict and some violence is to be expected. I ask, what is the alternative?
