In my modest opinion, what we are witness to is a strategy of draging Israel back into a full-scale war with the Arabs. The first tactic is to provoke us with Qassams and attacks at our military posts and on our civilians. By so doing, Gazan Arabs and their co-patriots in Judea and Samaria will gather international sympathy and, possibly, military cooperation from neighboring Arab/Moslem states, whether be it Syria or Iran. With these resources, they believe they can beat Israel or at least inflict serious punishing blows to it. They have no alternative peace option. Peace, to them, is capitulation and would require compromise and acceptance of a Jewish presence in this part of the world. That is unacceptable to the Arab/Moslem given his current mindset. What option does that leave Israel if not to do everything in its power to defend itself, even at the expense of impairing and destroying Arab infrastructure and jeopordizing Arab life? As always, if it is between you and me, I will always chose me.

Israel seems not to have learned anything from it's warfare with the Palestinians. It waited until the soldier was kidnapped before the recent incursion into the Strip. So, the world is saying, " All of this just for one soldier". (Heard on major TV channel news). Lately the Kassam launches have been included, with the qualifier that they are ineffective, crude and home made (as if 8,000 rockets fired into Israel has left no impact). Olmert is still testing the wind before he acts..thus the hesitancy about going all out. This allows for the upgraded rocket...threateing yet more Jewish communities. If they could, Hamas would use Katyushas..smuggled in from Lebanon or Egypt. Now that would really change things. BTW, Hezbollah has been quiet during all this...hmmmm, I wonder why?
