Lebanon: 47 killed in IDF strikes    Reuters
1. Poor Lebanon
I honestly feel somewhat bad for the average citizens of Lebanon. Just when it looked like they were trying to throw off the yoke of Syria and Iran and maybe make a somewhat normal country for themselves, Hezbollah goes and wrecks it for them because the egomaniac Nasrallah is afraid of becoming a marginal player and sought to make himself relevant again. And who will pay the price for this? The average Lebenese on the street. This wont be a short engagement and I cant imagine Hezbollah wint be blamed for bringing Israel back into Lebanon. AND they are part of the goverment, AND the Lebenese goverment never sent the army south as per 1559. Very sad.

2. This is what happens,
when you lift a finger on Israel. Great job IDF

3. Please explain?
There is a serious problem that Isreal has deal with; killing civilians by Isreal whether in Lebanon or in Gaza can never be a self-defensive act. We all shall see beyond our anger and let the human side in all of us prevail. Just imagine if Israel showed concerns about civilians on the other side of conflict and did not punish all people for the acts of some.

7. TELEVISION AND WAR
Those who are concerned to see a transition to a world in which these sorts of violent international exchanges have been eradicated must realise that some people OUTSIDE OF THE REGION are to blame for the present situation. The present situation is tragic for Israel and inevitable for the terrorist organizations. But both Israel and the deluded maniacs within the ranks of the terrorist organizations could have been saved from this violence if there had been a stronger resolve on the part of the world community to put an end to the mentality that has sought this violent episode. If the world community of nations had put more effort into the cause of bringing the academic definition of Universal Human Rights to the people of the region there would have been more hope for the diplomatic solutions to have been wrought and articulated. The United Nations Organization has failed in its responsibility to bring the text of the universal Declaration of Human Rights to the attention of this part of the world. It has failed repeatedly. The way to rid the world of leader types who accept and promote terrorism and armed struggle lays in the intelligence of the people who follow and support them. It is easier to take the people away from these leaders than to arrest or kill these leaders as most people seem to believe. How do you take a people away from its leader? You have to take their sad, tragic, painful, ignorant, corrupt and war torn world away from them. How do you do this? You invest serious money in television, newspaper and radio broadcasting that presents a regular narrative concerned with the actual definition of the Universal Declaration and International Bill of Human Rights. These documents are the voice of peace and constitute a concise definition for international and inter ethnic harmony. They are an academic foundation and intellectual platform for the transition to a world in which these sorts of violent international exchanges have been eradicated. Many of the so called Islamic Fundamentalist groups aver that they are opposed to ‘man made laws’ such as ‘human rights’ preferring to teach their adherents that the Quran must be the sole source of law for society. Are these oppositions to modern political and social science based in comprehensive knowledge of the actual definition of Universal Human Rights. Do they really know that their rights to a secular existence in a just world is espoused in the definition of universal human rights! No they do not know. They have no clues to the just world the UN General Assembly has espoused in the Universal Declaration of December 1948. A Declaration that came too late to pre-empt some of the violence that brought the Middle-East into conflict over land tenure and religious doctrine. But it is not too late to make the transition. If television news programmes broadcast one narrative recitation or concise quotation of an Article of Human Rights every time they broadcast a bulletin how long would it take before a just world removed an unjust world? How news bulletins are there each day? How many days in a week, a month, a year? The Universal Declaration is composed of 30 Articles. You do the math. http://www.un.org/Overview/rights.html Where is the world’s sense of praxis? Trying to cheat banks? Trying to cheat death! The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and International Bill of Human Rights are supposed to be documents that constitute the test of leadership. Bring these to the people and you can take the people away from the wrong sort of leaders. BUT A SERIOUS AND LONG TERM CONSCIENTIOUS EFFORT IS REQUIRED

9. #3...QUESTIONS...
Why do Hamas terrorists and Hizbullah fighters hide among civilians??? Can you answer this question. ISrael will hit them no matter where they are or who they are with. So the responsibility falls on these guys to not put others in danger. When you attack a nation, you become a target. This all started b/c of Hizbullah, not Israel, right. Get the picture straight and then ask questions.

11. Disproportionate ?
War is cruel. War is not neat, it is complicated and unpredictable. But, because TV and instant reporting shows its effects to the world, those who don't indertand its significance, and the necessity of being violent at times, are revulsed. HAD THERE BEEN TV IN THE U.S .IN 1864 AND 5, THERE WOULD BE SLAVERY THERE TODAY !!!!

15. #1 You are right...but
What are our options. Try to deal with the Hizbullah "diplomatically"...? It is a shame, but if the Lebanese govt. would have taken care of bussiness this could have been avoided. I do applaud your humanitarianism, though. Let us remember that Hashem ordered us not to celebrate when the Egyptians drowned in the Red Sea.

"Some" people even if their numbers are not great do a great deal of damage. Palestinians and Moslems in general do a very poor job of controlling their extremists around the world. You can't avoid it. If you don't want to be dragged into destruction control your exremists.

17. Under the haystack fast asleep: Qassams shmassams
Reprisals? What do reprisals have to do with it? Israel's enemies are making war against it. Israel's leaders have been asleep at the switch for so long that they can't wake up--and smell the bacon. The grill is sizzling.

18. Those who know me on these Talkbacks
know that I am a "peacenik" and that I belong to the radical center. I hate the hawkishness and idiocy of the right-wing as well as the fantasm of the left. The only thing I can say following these recent events in which the Arab and Palestinian side showed incredible stupidity and lack of foresight is: IT IS TIME FOR RIVERS OF BLOOD OF OUR ENEMIES TO START FLOWING. No holding back, no excuse-me, no I'm-sorry. If this does turn into an all-out war, I will travel to Israel and volunteer in the Army. I hope many others writing from the Galut here feel the same.
Michael Steiner   (07.13.06)
19. State Terrorism
The Hezbollah attacks Israel's military, abducting two soldiers and killing 8, while the Israelis retaliate by killing 47 civilians. Same with Gaza, one soldier abducted and two killed, while Israel retaliated by killing god knows how many civilians.

21. ARAB PRISONERS
When they are caught, shoot them in such an act so that they don't become bargaining chips. There is no reason to have so many prisoners. Or exile them to a remote island that no one knows about. In the meantime, bring back Yaalon as Minister of Defense and remove Peretz who is out of his element. Never again mention withdrawal or convergence which got Israel into this pickle in the first place. Olmert and Weisglass screwed Israel in the first place by advocating policies that made arabs think that Israel was weak. Bring Netanyahy and Libermand in to project strength and unity. If you have land-based rockets, for Godsake, use them.

24. When will the world see the truth?
When will the world realize that the hamas, Hizbollah al queda, etc are terrorists regardless of who they are doing it to. Of course Israel has the right to defend itself. Is the world so scared of the Arab countries and their oil? Who is this Kofi Anan...what right does he have? The French...I won't even waste my time with the French. When the US was attacked on 9/11 we went to war...and asked the world to help. These are the same terrorists who are constantely terrorizing Israel, they kidnap and kill Israeli civilians and soldiers and then dance in the streets burning flags. what's wrong with you people. Do you defend and support these terrorists? How dare anyone tell Israel they can't defend themselves, country and people. Look at the facts...ever since terrorism was an actual word, it pointed towards the Militant Arab Countrymen. WAKE UP!
david ,   New York   (07.13.06)
25. #19, Fadi....
The answer to your one-sided statement is this. Israel never incites or attakcs for no reason. There is no debating this fact. Hamas, Jihad, and Hizbullah attack and then hide among civilians. It is their responsibility and their fault that innocent people are killed by IDF, The US gov't sees this as well as other countries, but you don't get it, do you???
DR ,   Florida, USA   (07.13.06)
26. #15
Oh, I think we are on the same page. I feel bad for the average Lebenese who's life is being coopted by Syria, Iran and Hezbollah and of course the Lebenese government that didnt send its army south to secure the border (not that I am sure they could have done anything, but it WAS their obligation under 1559) You are correct, but who knows if the Lebenese government was even capable of sending the army down there...they have other masters to answer to. If if if. ] This provocation in the North from Hezbollah only makes sense to Nasrallah, not to any normal person. They are going to bring Israel back for the long run and I dont think the average citizen in Lebanon is going to be too pleased to see all the progress they have made go to pot.

29. To fadi
While you and other terroritsts supporters have always proclaimed int'l law and such in every case with Israel, it's time for you to eat it. From the Geneva conventions. "Article 28 The presence of a protected person may not be used to render certain points or areas immune from military operations. Article 29 The Party to the conflict in whose hands protected persons may be is responsible for the treatment accorded to them by its agents, irrespective of any individual responsibility which may be incurred. " While I hate using anything from the UN, this is a primary source http://www.unhchr.ch/html/menu3/b/92.htm The fact is that Int'l law is very clear. The Parties responsible for the deaths of the civilians in both Gaza and Lebanon, are Hamas and Hezbollah. There is your state terrorists, the one of gaza and the one of south lebanon.
Da dude   (07.13.06)
30. Dear 19 - man you are so wrong
and thats the big problem why hizballa attacks israel in an area that there is no disagreemant about it ??? the arab nation is so far away in his behavour and way of thinking thats why gaza looks like it looks thats the main problem the terror is bad for everyone israel was in lebanon in order to protect the people that live in north of israel ( and by the way -it includes the arabs that lives there) israel was no more in lebanon and huzballa decide to attack and if hizballa attacks...israel will destroy this terror "oraganization" no one will kidnapp our soldiers and no one will shot " katushes" to israel.... if you think that terror is good for the arab nation you are wrong man if there were no terror israel would not attack terror leaders in gaza isarel would not bomb in gaza or in lebanon but while there are terror israel will defende the people of israel.....!!!!! ( jewish , druz and arabs ) say no the terror and yes for peace!
