31. Right on, #12
RJ ,   Upland, USA   (07.23.06)
In addition to Steve's ideas for showing the facts more clearly about Hezbollah's hiding behind their wives, mothers and children, they should show the true goals of Hezbollah--the destruction of Israel (not negotiation for peace), and the wider goals of Islamic world domination. MSM doesn't show the wider context often enough--this is an escalation of jihad, and it's going on WORLDWIDE. People will be more understanding of Israel's plight when they see it juxtaposed with Mumbai, Darfur, Somalia, or any other recent jihadi attacks. Show the big picture, the picture that involves and endangers us all.
32. to Tony Saber #8
Yoel   (07.23.06)
I have to admit pictures are disgusting, but I never imagined war as something nice. Anyway, images belonging to propaganda, exploited in order to make tears come out. Unfortunately, I see no compassion to israelis who also recieve bombs and missiles from Lebanon. I haven't seen any picture from at least one dead from Hezbollah's side. It looks as if israeli children send mortars towards lebanese children, and kill them. This website is just encouraging lebanese to legitimate israelis' killing. So, don't expect any compassion from me ! The real courage should be criticizing Hezbollah in YOUR country, knowing you risk your life by doing so.
33. # 15
Yoel   (07.23.06)
you had more than 200 deads last week in train bombings, and nobody cared about it, all around the world. International Media have completely forgotten it... It would be better if you fought first for your own interests, instead of showing care to people very far from you.
34. To 27 - you mix your metaphors
Shai ,   Israel   (07.23.06)
Lebanon is a sovereign country, Artem. They not only countenanced Hizbollah's growth and threat to Israel, they encouraged it. Israel had many times not responded to provocations from Hizbollah. More times than that, they told Lebanon to move Hezbollah out of South Lebanon and put their army in its place. They even told Lebanon what would happen if they did not do this. None of what is happening now is or should have been a surprise. But why was it? Precisely because they bought the myth that Israel's withdrawal from Lebanon was a surrender. It was not. It was a conditional withdrawal, which depended on Lebanon setting its roots of sovereignty in the south. They said, verbatum, "we are not in the business of protecting Israel - HIzbollah is Israel's problem not ours". Let's put a proper metaphor in place. Hizbollah is a tumor. Sometimes tumors become so intertwined with healthy tissue that amputation is required. Hezbollah used Lebanon's highway, hospitals, mosques, houses, bridges, electrical infrastructure, airports, ports and electronic monitoring and communications infrastructure to provide backup for its attacks on Israel. That Israel hit those infrastructures is self defense. You can't expect us to countenance a situation where terrorists hide behind civilians, shoot as us, and then expect us to hold fire because civilians and their infrastructure will be damaged. No way. Our civilians are also important - to us, more important. So, we'll ignore you, Artem, and your self-righteous, tendentious and selective morality that defends the Lebanese who cheered Hizbollah as the victims, while chastising us for being cold hearted. For once, finally, the Israelis warmed up enough to realize that they, too, have a right to peace and quiet. If Lebanon won't take care of business, we'll do it for her.
35. Now is not the time to be distracted by the enemies of civil
Edwin ,   Canada   (07.23.06)
Israel has a responsibility to protect her citizens at all cost. According to British intel, Hezbollah has rockets armed with dirty warheads. Israel cannot allow these to be used. Further, intel reports large airlifts of missiles from Iran to Syria for use by Hezbollah. These animals must be stopped or the consequences will be much worse.
36. Jenin Massacre Syndrome
Dave Stanway ,   Newcastle, England   (07.23.06)
How blinkered is Sever Plocker? Quote "The air force's bombing of Lebanon have caused, as always happens in war, damage and destruction, but this damage has been extremely limited". Take a look at the BBC news website and the story of the UNs Jan Egeland. Look at the video and tell me that the damage is "limited". Block after block of residential homes turned to rubble. How is bombing these homes, the airport, the hospital in Tyre, fuel dumps, power stations and Lebanese Army stations, targeting Hezbollah? Sever says there are 50,000 refugees but most agencies are reporting that between 500, 000 and 700, 000 people have been made homeless. Do you really believe your own propaganda? As an aside, before this totally disproportionate attack on the infrastructure of Lebanon and the collective punishement of it's people, I was a supporter of Israel in it's right to exist and defend itself against some very nasty neighbours, but Israel has lost any moral authority it might have had with the deliberate targeting of the Lebanese people. This will only result in more Arab resentment and another generation who will hate Israel and be committed to it's destruction. History should tell you that might is not right and that war doesn't solve anything in the long run.

43. I wonder what would the rightous UK do if London were bombed
Robert ,   US   (07.23.06)
oh, wait, I remember- they flattened Dresden and other cities and killed millions. 360 dead is tragic, but the SMALLEST NUMBER EVER of dead in a modern war. 300 dead from more than 2000 targets destroyed- do the math- a carefull effort NOT to hurt civilians. By the way, in Jenin the Palestinians lied about the numbers of dead just like they lied about mass graves (none found) and just like they transport bombs in ambulances. but people like Whitney will never listen. they dont let the facts bother their shiny pseudo-liberalism.
44. Not all Spanish the same
José Luis ,   Southern Spain   (07.23.06)
I have been thinking of the "Palestinian-Israeli affaire" for years, and my one and only conclussion is that nothing of this all would happen if the right to exist were given to you, Jews. I am with you, I suffer for you, I know you are right, I know that what they call here "agressions" is nothing but self defense. I am totally ashamed for my President and for my Government, that does not represent a big part of the Spanish society. The mass media are mainly against you, but only watching the facts with logical eyes, everybody would understand the truth, and would be on your side. Israel, love from Spain. And although I am not a believer (but I consider myself a "cultural christian"), I feel very close to you. I feel I am Jew as. Once again, love from Spain.
45. Denise: A quick search in major Brazilian media can
Márcia ,   Brazil   (07.23.06)
easily prove how biased against Israel they are. All Brazilians see of Israel is large buildings slightly damaged by rockets. Only the slightly injured Israelis are shown, as if Israelis were not dying. And what is this, anyway? Are you blaming Israelis for not dying by the thousands? You should hope that all those 700 Brazilians rescued in Lebanon are regular citizens indeed, as I hope they are, and pray that no terrorist was hidden among them, ready to head for the Triple Frontier once stepping foot in São Paulo. You know how easy it is to get Brazilian citizenship these days, don't you?
46. To #36 - how naive can you get?
Larry ,   Eastbourne, UK   (07.24.06)
Do you really believe the lies of the BBC and the United Nations? Since the Hizbullah terror war started the BBC has told nothing but lies. It has presented the war as a war against Lebanon when it is really a war against Israel. It has grossly exaggerated civilian casualties in Lebanon and has completely ignored civilian casualties in Israel. It has completely ignored the humanitarian disaster in Israel whereby a million people have been bombed out of their homes and livelihoods. It has lied and lied. It is not just a matter of anti-Israel bias which we are used to, it is a matter of total lack of even a shred of journalistic integrity. As regards the UN, if you have followed Israeli affairs over the past few years in any depth you will know that this organisation is the greatest global perpetrator of anti-Israel hatred, racism and hypocrisy. Egeland is lying about the situation in Lebanon and has said nothing about the humanitarian catastrophe in Israel. The residential homes bombed have been used by Hizbullah to store weapons. The airport, seaport and roads have been used to transport weapons from Iran and Syria to Lebanon. The Lebanese army have collaborated with Hizbullah. So all these are legitimate targets. Iran, Syria and Hizbullah planned this war for years. Stop being so blinkered - that is, if you want to open your mind to the truth.
47. To Miklat from Haifa
Alexander ,   Athens Greece   (07.24.06)
I didnt notice any reduction in numbers concerning theinnocent casualties from Lebanon. The only fact which you the Israeli people have to understand is that the whole American political establishment are taken hostage from AIPAC and Juice Money. With this short termism attitude I feel it is a natural consequence to have again 9/11 events
48. 48 - Reading too much J. Mearsheimer and S. Walt, Alexander?
Márcia ,   Brazil   (07.24.06)
49. Another perspective.
Alex ,   Germany / SW   (07.24.06)
Interesting article. I think the truth lies (sic!) somewhere in the middle. For me it's refreshing to see that other perspective. Thank you for that.
50. Please help refute anti-Israel lies

51. To No 43 Robert US
dave stanway ,   England   (07.24.06)
Has Robert forgotten that the UK was bombed over and over again by the IRA, who, incidentally derived most of their financing from Irish Americans. On the principles that Israel is using, the UK should have bombed and destroyed New York and Dublin as that was where the terrorists were most supported. I have personally experienced the results of bombing as I worked in Manchester when thr IRA destroyed the whole city centre 10 years ago, just a few yards from where I worked. In the end it only stopped when they sat down and TALKED and AGREED a way forward. As to being careful not to hurt civilians, look at that family that were targeted by an Israeli jet yesterday, because they were driving a mini van. They had been told to get out by the Israelis who then kill them for doing so. So much for "careful". If one of the 300 dead was your family you would be devastated. These aren't real people to you, it's only a numbers game to you.
52. Deaths in Israel
Adam ,   Washington DC USA   (07.24.06)
My friends son in law was just killed in Haifa by Rockets coming from Lebanon. Nobody from his family is interviewed or cared about by the press. The Israelis have dedidated their paranoid lives to defense and building bomb shelters and requiring them in every home by law. Many more would die if they didnt have these. Sometimes you must go out instead of sitting in fear so he died. But the press wants more deaths to make things seem equal. They are bloodthirsty and victim hungry. We know the world does not care about us and love to hate Israel and anything America supports. Israel military should hold daily briefings by the military in explaining efforts. This may help. But probably not. Until then Israeli must do what it needs to defend itself and change the facts on the ground and the rest of rest of the world can just support Hizzbulah. That is what they are doing whether they realize it or not.
53. Dissenting
Gianni ,   Savona, Italy   (07.24.06)
How can we agree to this callous disinformation? Newspapers all over the world state a different matter of fact: are all liars? Maybe civilian Lebanese, killed by the war, had another story to tell, but unfortunately they can speak no more... so, keep your truth and live happy and satisfied. Bur don't realize that, in this manner, the war will go on forever?
54. 51-Dave, the IRA wasn't firing deadly rockets at UK from US.
Márcia ,   Brazil   (07.24.06)
55. Dissenting once more
Gianni ,   Savona, Italy   (07.24.06)
My talkback message was published for a while, then disappeared: a fine exemple of fair play? In fact, I was dissenting from the author on the basis that intermational media exposed correctly the situation, the causes of war and the terroristic nature of Hizbullah, but also the large amount of losses among Lebanese people and the huge destructions of civil infrastructure. Quite different from what the columnist wrote. Internal propaganda, maybe; war censorship of unpleasant messages, almost sure.
56. Dissentig: a correction
Gianni ,   Savona, Italy   (07.24.06)
Now that all my two messages have been publisched, I've the duty to withdraw what I told in the last period of the second message about censorship; it was probably a technical problem, and I apologize. Thank you.
57. To #54 Marcia
Gianni ,   Savona, Italy   (07.24.06)
You have a very poor notion of the IRA terrorist attacks to GB during many past decades, otherwhile you hadn't written your comment. And GB won only when it stopped the war approach and adopted the appeasement one.
58. 54 - Marcia
Dave Stanway ,   Newcastle England   (07.24.06)
Marcia, no it wasn't firing rockets but most of the money for buying the explosives came from America and most of the IRA were hiding out in Southern Ireland which they used as a base for blowing up English cities. The IRA leaders were even welcomed at the White House. How times change when America became the target instead.
59. The Press in Europe.
Jerry Meents ,   Ogden, Utah. USA   (07.24.06)
Hello # 4. Hey Carlo even though I live in the USA, I do read the newspapers, magazines and even some TV and find that a lot of misinformation and even out and out lie's about Israel in them. And if you think that if there is a death toll of 100-150 for a few Israeli prisoners is tomany is eazy to say for you. You don't live under constant pressure from Hamas and Hizbollah. Hizbollah have been lobbing rockets and or shells off and on in to Israel for at least 2 years. If a Country let anybody atack a other Country from there soil it constitute's a act of war. Hizbollah and Hamas and even other Arab groups have sworn to distroy Israel. The Arabs and other terrorist groups have been killing Israeli and other women ,old man and children , all civilians, since 1552. Do you want Israel to sit on there butt untill it is to late? Not any more, for two thousand years the Jewish people were better Christians than the Christians. The Jewish people turned the other cheek for all those years. Not the Christians, they have been killing people all over the world for all that time, even your country . And the Moslims were doing the same in Europe, in the Middle East and in other Country's now. So please let Israel alone. PS. Carlo did you know that the state of war still exist between the Arab Country's and Israel? (ecept two) The Arabs refused to sign a peace treaty.
