1. wrong question
(07.27.06)
the Germans are supposed to protect Israelis not threaten them
2. I know if i'am the solider being pointed at
Mike ,   Israel   (07.27.06)
by a German i would not hesatate to drop him. Having said that there would be no reason for a German or any other to point there weapons at Israelis. As for the Hezbollah and there freinds thats another issue. The question should be, cas you see Germans and Israelis fighting side by side? Now that would be History. My Grandfather is roling in his grave on that thought.
3. to # 1, protect?
cathy ,   toronto   (07.27.06)
what do you expect of a bunch of nazis? they hate jewish people the same way muslim do ! bomb on them!
4. #4....
andrew engel ,   denver usa   (07.28.06)
what a disgusting comment cathy. The Germans today stand with Israel, so stop spreading that trash around.
5. OF ADENOUR AND BEN GURION - WE FORGAVE LONG AGO
Andrew ,   Miami,Fl   (07.28.06)
WHEN CONRAD ADENOUR SAT DOWN WITH DAVID BEN GURION - THEY BOTH KNEW THAT BOTH PEOPLES WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN WE FORGAVE - BECAUSE WE KNEW ISRAEL, AND THE RETURN, WERE AT HAND. WE SAID NEVER FORGET, SO THAT PEOPLE COULD LEARN GERMANY HAD BEGUN 40 YEARS OF MISERY AND PUNISHMENT HANDED TO IT BY A "HIGHER AUTHORITY" ITS PUNISHMENT IS OVER GERMANY IS ONE COUNTRY THAT HAS SHOWN THE WORLD HOW TO SAY "IM SORRY" - AND MEAN IT - THE REST OF THE WORLD CAN LEARN A LESSON IN FACT - I THINK ITS TIME TO ISSUE "FORMALISED FORGIVENESS". DO WE EVEN HAVE SUCH A CEREMONY? LIKE WE MOURN THE EGYPTIANS AND THE TEN PLAGUES - WE SHOULD MOURN THE HORROR OF POST WAR SOVIET DOMINATION OF THEM - THEY SUFFERED GREATLY IF THEY DO COME - WELCOME THEM TO THE BIRTHPLACE OF RABBI JOSH (JESUS) - AND THEN GET THEM DRUNK ON SOME GOLD STAR BEER !! ISRAEL WONT BOTHER THEM, AND THEY WONT BOTHER ISRAEL
6. What's the int'l force mission?
Ana ,   Spain   (07.28.06)
The headline and Almer Bruk’s statement make me bewildered. I thought the multinational force would be deployed to prevent Hizbollah from attacking Israel, not to prevent the Israeli soldiers from defending their country from the terrorists.
7. Kathy, what did you say?
Chris ,   Warsaw, Poland   (07.28.06)
Where were you during last 60 years? You are saying some insane words as if Germans didn't undergo total change of their soul. They are more pacifists these days than we, Poles...
8. Only 70 years ago ....
Hans-Jörg Marby ,   Markdorf, Germany   (07.28.06)
The best and most effective help for Israel is to pay to this afflicted country and it can buy what it needs to protect itself.
9. That would be spooky
Sharon ,   Haifa, Israel   (07.28.06)
Maybe they should have that area be Druze only - they're the only ones who have kept cool throughout this whole process.
10. #3
(07.28.06)
wrong again they may not especially like Jews or Israelis but they dislike Arabs much more
11. no. 3 i've lived and worked with germans. they weren't nazis
(07.28.06)
12. This has to be the dumbest idea yet
Lisa ,   USA   (07.28.06)
Why would Germany supply their people to the Lebanese border, Hizbullah is shooting missles over the border miles long, totally moronic.
13. #7 - Maybe she's referring to the growing # of neo-Nazis (?)
Sharon ,   Haifa, Israel   (07.28.06)
14. GERMAN TROOPS IN LEBANON
JJM ,   London, UK   (07.28.06)
A complete red herring! Himmelreich is correct. German soldiers in any sort of serious buffer zone force won't be confronting Israelis - they'll have to fight Hizbullah.
15. German soldier pointing his weapon at Jewish soldier?
Andy Lang ,   Cleveland, Ohio USA   (07.28.06)
Thank you for an informative article. It's a good summary of the debate in Germany today. Two corrections: The Free Democratic Party is not "moderate Left" and would not describe itself as such. It's closer to the traditional, libertarian wing of the Republican party in the U.S., but comparisons with the very different spectrum of American politics are usually problematic. The FDP is a traditional European "liberal" party, meaning pro-business, pro-free-markets (definitely not "Left" in that sense) and strongly supportive of individual freedom. The Left Party is not "extreme Left," though of course its opponents in Germany would like that label to stick. Even the conservative media in German refrain from the word "extreme" since this party is supported by 10 percent of the voters, is represented in the Bundestag and is a junior coalition partner in two state governments--where its policies have been anything but "extreme." (So moderate, in fact, that there's a small but vocal left fringe that accuses the Left Party of "opportunism" and "betrayal.") Two small mistakes in an otherwise excellent article. Thank you!

Lauren ,   Israel   (07.28.06)
Would you care to explain then, all those little neo-nazis running around Germany? By the way, saying that the Germans are more "pacifist" than Poles doesn't really make such a strong statement, seeing as Poland still has no great love for Jews. Not then, and not now.
17. #3, Cathy:
Michael Steiner   (07.28.06)
You're a dumb moron, dear. Germans are probably the most pro-Israel nation in Europe, certainly far more so than the so-called victors of WW2, and infinitely much more so than your Canadians. Take a hike.
18. weird situation!!
Emily ,   Tel-Aviv   (07.28.06)
I have to say that i am trying to think of this situation: israelies and german soldiers together and it is difficult for me to imagine it ( for someone who was a soldier).i think in a memory for all the survivers and not from the holocous this situation shouldn't happen..i am not blamming the germans for being nazi i just think it is better not to involve them..we have enough trouble we don't need more.. I just have to add more..I had been in germany and also in poland and I can't say that antisemity passed away , and in poland it even strengthen.

20. A Little Clarity
Uncle Sam ,   USA   (07.28.06)
is needed here. Nazi germany was defeated in 1944. Since then the Germans have gone through pains to rectify the NAZI stigmatism. If I had to choose between a German soldier pointing a gun at a me or an Islamofacist offering me a candy bar, I would gladly look down the barrel of the German gun. The candy bar would prove to be much more unhealthy. Any international force is going to consist of people that Israel is not comfortable with. Personally, I would wage this war into Lebanon until the Iranians and Syrians became involved. That way Israel could take out the two threats to their survival that Hitler could have only dreamed about. Once Iran gets a nuke and they will, it will be open season on Jews like never before. Take them out now or suffer the biblical scale consequences. Ahma-nut-job is counting on this spat to camoflage his intentions "for the final solution".

Randy ,   USA   (07.28.06)
As a resident of one of the "so called" victors of WW2 I take exception to your premise. Israel has no better friend on this planet than the USA. If you don't count us as a an ally then you are truly screwed and you better hope that your Messiah shows up soon. Millions of biblical christians in the US pray for Israel on a daily basis. We are in the majority now but we may not be for very long. We keep our elected officials on the straight and narrow path when it comes to Israel. Most of them would not be elected if they turned on Israel. Israels survival is the survival of the Christian World. Don't get carried away with your hatered for Gentiles.
22. Only a minority of germans supported the nazis.
John ,   Sweden   (07.28.06)
I fully understand that jews feel anger and hatred because of the massmurder that took place during world war II. However most people with the same ethnicity as germans fought against Hitler in countries such as great britain and the united states. . In germany there was only a minority that supported the nazi party. As a penalty for the nazi parties massmurder they lost more than 10 million lives and a big part of eastern germany. Something that all arab regimes (and perhaps some jews?) would consider as much more terrible a loss than the loss of human life. Today the german society and other western european societies are the most peaceminded and least racist societies in the history of mankind. It has though come to the point where Europeans are so afraid of being racist that they always support the ethnic group that is least European in any conflict. Jews are more similar to Europeans and therefore it is politically correct to support the arabs. I support an objective measurement from which you of course can come to different conclusions. Mine is though that Israel needs strategic depth and has a strong historic argument for retaining parts of the west bank and the jordan valley. Both because of ancient history and the fact that the arabs have attacked Israel in several wars. The arabs on the other hand are the most endowed people on earth when it comes to land area. Loosing parts of the west bank would only mean losing less than half of a percent of their total land area. On the other hand for israel it would mean a big deal since it is one of the worlds smallest countries and most israelis are crammed into a fourth of the territory while the rest is the Negev desert. Therefore the best solution is that about half of the west bank becomes a part of Jordan (which already has palestinian/arab majority) and this becomes a self sustainable Palestine/Jordan. Jordan could also retain the sunni belt of iraq. Thereby creating a win win situation for israelis and palestinian arabs.

Moronic? First I have to commend Germany for taking the initiative to help the situation. Especially by risking its own soldier’s life. The idea behind having a neutral zone is simply that, neutral where neither Israeli, Lebanese nor Hezbollah forces will occupy that area. Missiles will stop once a seize fire will be declared. So, since you (expert) have declared this to be the "dumbest idea yet" why don’t you enlighten us with your smartest idea........
24. anti-semitism paranoia
Eric ,   London   (07.28.06)
For all of us being so paranoid of anti-Semitism please take a deep breath and chill already. Racism is part of human nature: Jew’s are guilty of it just as much as anybody else if not more. For all of you who raise an eyebrow….please think of a situation where your daughter or son brings home a non Jew for marriage or maybe a black Jew……hmmmm WW2 is over. You love BMW and S500 Benz. Say thank you to Germany or any other country that is willing to sacrifice its own soldier’s life to help and protect our Jewish life. It’s simply a nice gesture. Dunka.
25. Interesting Situation
Mark ,   San Antonio USA   (07.28.06)
Having lived in Germany for nearly 10 years between 1985 and 1999, I can say there has been quite a change within the fabric of German society. If you live in a town such as Heidelberg, you will note the sub-surface Nazism that never died in 1945. However, there are other locations in Germany that are completely de-Nazified. Unfortunately, despite the liberal nature of Germany as a whole, stationing German troops north of Israel (as part of a NATO contingent) would be most interesting indeed. Germans on Arab soil, potentially aligned with their former anti-Semitic agents in the Middle East. Very interesting.
26. STOP WAR NOW!
Ehud ,   Hiroshima, JAPAN   (07.28.06)
This is meaning less!! Why would we want to bring Gernans to our frontiers? who can insure that these people would not turn against us? a corrupt colonel from UN would be the best gift for Syria and Iran to replenish the area with all kinds of weapons. !! THERE IS ONLY ONE WAY OUT! STOP WAR NOW! STOP WAR NOW! STOP WAR NOW!
27. Germans and Isrealis DO get along...
Patrick ,   Siegen, Germany   (07.28.06)
Germany sells Submarines to Israel, Tank parts (ALL Merkava Barrels come from Rheinmetall, as do all American Barrels), and all kinds of military stuff. The Bundeswehr and the IDF have a yearly trainig exchange. Germans train with Israelis and vice versa. No big deal. The world renowned German Antiterror Unit GSG9 was initiated and trained with the help of Israel CounterTerrorist units . Get over it. Ties between Germany and Israel are strong. If there is a chance, that Germans could be put into a situation, in which they would have to schoot at Israelis, Germany will not have it.... But that's a theroretical question. Islamic nuts are the one they would be shooting at in reality... Calm down everybody. Remember that if Israel wasn't there these poeple would be targeting Europe/Turkey. Germans (as are peoples around Europe) are starting to realize, that Israel is doing the dirty work for us (the Western World). If Israel indeed some day should call upon us for assistance, we Germans shouldn't get lost in self inflicting discussions...lock and load, for Israels cause is our cause.
