Unless Israelis change their arrogant attitude, no force on earth will bring peace to the region. You don't trust France (the country that supplied you with mass distruction weapon) makes me wonder whom Lebanese should trust. It is no secret that we are now more convinced that before that this is holly crusade war from the axes of evil: Israel, USA and UK. You can not even fight few farmers protecting their land in Lebaon because they are right and fighting Israeli terrorism. Never will be peace unless you accept your enemies and make them accept you. This can not be done by terrorising Lebanese civilians and killing 600 of them. Wake up Israelis... The possible solution of the French forces being turned into Mishmar Hagvul is after all not a bad one BUT it depends who will be at the helm in France after the presidentials in 2007 which are not very far away . Any military force is only as good and determined as its government may be . The other talkbackers are surely right that France is a poor choice. France offers two advantages to, say, the UN, though. (1) it probably WOULD prefer that Syria be removed permanently from Lebanon; (2) France manipulates the international media and UN well, so if it struggles with Iran/Syria/Hezbollah, it will get good press; and (3) if France becomes a problem, a few well-aimed weapons from the Israelis would cause them to flee, and the US wouldn't bat an eye over it, which would not be an option if the US or UK were there. Of course, it's terrible news just the same. Israel needs to control the border. France might be helpful in Beirut by advising on the removal of Hezbollah & Syria.

Guess what - it IS a set-up for a MUCH larger multi-national force which will lead to a Har Meggido scenario. Let me make no bones about it and let me dismiss some exclusionist ideas. The French do INDEED have a VERY effective infantry, rivaling the Americans. The REAL problem with the French are the politicians - they'll order the infantry to ignore hizbullah or Syrian attacks against Israel and to engage the IDF with all they have if the IDF responds to incursions or attacks. In the end, this will only lead to a new war - this time between Israel and the EU and possibly all of NATO. The only international force that could POSSIBLY work is not a force serving as a buffer but one who would exterminate hizbullah and hopefully cripple Syria. Don't expect to see it, though. In the time being, the only way to forestall it is for Israel in send about 50k troops on the ground and take care of business. And to all the humanitarians out there - doing so will LIMIT the civilian casualties much more than air strikes and will help erradicate the hizbullah forces.
