Of course Israel has the best army in the Middle East. But the IDF is facing a cowardly foe that deliberately uses civilians as shields, wears civilian clothing, uses civilian vehicles for transport of personnel, weapons, and munitions, maintains military equipment and bases in (and under civilian homes), and conducts war from civilian centers loaded with - you guessed it - civilians. Not even the most mighty army in the world, that of the U.S. (as evidenced in Vietnam and now Iraq), can be expected to "win" short of demolishing everything in sight, as did the magnificently hypocritical Russians in Chechnya (conservative estimates of 200,000 civilian deaths in the two Chechen wars). Yet, even given the disgusting, criminalistic propensities of Hizbullah, the IDF is doing a fantastic job 1) killing Hizbullah operatives 2) minimizing IDF casualties and 3) minimizing civilian casualties. Although Western countries don't like to admit it, many, MANY more civilians have been killed in their wars than have been killed in the current Israeli operation in Lebanon. All news out of Lebanon happens to be tightly controlled by Hizbullah, so the civilian deaths have been played up, IDF casualties have been played up, and Hizbullah losses have been underreported.

IHzbollah is a well prepared guerilla army,and in order to kill it you have to find it. IDF is really geared up to fighting a WW2 Blitzkrieg type war, and it takes time to adjust - as the US and Britian have found in Iraq. If IDF fought the Syrian army it would be over quickly, as the Syrians have very limited capability to fight any kind of war. IDF would come unstuck if it tried to occupy Syria as you would soon find a Iraq style Guerilla war to face.
