Ehud ,   London, England   (08.03.06)
What about if that family in the bombed car is in BEIRUT, miles from the border and placing Israel beyond the range of any Hizbollah rocket? Are they still a valid target? WHY ARE WE BOMBING CIVILIANS IN BEIRUT?? I'm tired of the hypocracy of my homeland. Israel the country is meaningless now, a puppet to both internal (fundamentalist) and external (economic) forces. The new Israel is wherever you take it. I take my Israel wherever I go, but I won't be taking it back to that area of the middle east.

63. HRW: "Cooks the Books"
Ertok   (08.03.06)
These people are the pits. Did you see where and how they conduct and compile their "research". "The report is based on extensive interviews with victims and witnesses of attacks, visits to some blast sites, and information obtained from hospitals, humanitarian groups, security forces and government agencies. Human Rights Watch also conducted research in Israel, assessing the weapons used by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). " Ha! Is this BEST they can do? This all so full of reliable "sources" and what would these wankers know about "IDFweapons"? What a LOAD OF S*** Unbelievable bias: "let's cook up a story"
64. GLOBAL JIHAD - CONDEMNING VICTIMS Instead of the GUILTY
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (08.03.06)
Past experience prove Islamists lie about the number of civilians wounded and killed. Less Israelis get killed than Lebanese because Israel do not use Israeli civilians as human shields and protect Israelis by placing them in bomb shelters - one third of Israelis are currently living in bomb shelters. Israel warned Qana residents repeatedly by pamphlets and radio to leave the area - 150 rockets were launched from Qana - these rockets killed 18 Israelis and wounded hundreds. Hamas and Hizbullah fight the proxy war against Israel for Syria and Iran. United with Lebanon whose Prime Minister Siniora on July 30, 2006, publicly thanked terrorist Hizbullah for its sacrifices in the war against Israel. YNETNEWS (07.30.06) Lebanese PM thanks Hizbullah for 'sacrifices' http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3283763,00.html Iran's proxy, Hizbullah, ruthlessly uses Lebanese civilians as human shields to protect rocket launching teams - setting up rockets and other weapons in basements of apartment blocks, schools and mosques. Iran's proxy, Hizbullah despicably shoots from inside mosques, hospitals and schools in south Lebanon. Images show Iran's proxy, Hizbullah using high-density residential areas to launch rockets: http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/0,,19955774-5007220,00.html Global jihadists - Iran's proxy, Hizbullah's evil goal is the murder of every Jew. On October 22, 2002, Nasrallah told Lebanon's Daily Star: "If they (Jews) all gather in Israel, it will save us the trouble of going after them worldwide." The source of the global, genocidal war is religion-inspired hatred for Jews and other non-Muslims. The purpose of the PLO as enshrined in its charter is the destruction of Israel. PLO terrorists were implanted into Israel through Oslo "peace" accords. The Hamas Charter states: "Israel, by virtue of its being Jewish and of having a Jewish population, defies Islam and the Muslims... Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it..." Murderous Iran states repeatedly they intend to wipe Israel off the map - Iran is now dangerously close in achieving nuclear capability to execute their genocidal goal. Hamas and Hizbullah proxies fight Iran's war against Israel - a global jihad with its ultimate goal the entire world subjugated under Islamic rulers - Israel's fight for freedom and human rights is a fight for freedom and human rights for all nations.
65. PLO REWARDED for JIHAD AGAINST LEBANON'S CHRISTIANS
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (08.03.06)
Lebanon was a Christian country until Muslims achieved a majority through an extremely high birthrate. The jihad against Lebanon's Christians was savage and barbaric. The IDF was the only hope for the embattled Christians. Click on Photo gallery: http://www.free-lebanon.com/ 20,000 Christians handicapped by PLO atrocities. PLO terrorists were rewarded for their savagery and mass murder of Christians by implanting them into Israel as TERRORIST "peace" partners through Oslo to continue the bloody, barbaric jihad against Israel's Jews. The Christians of Damour, Lebanon treated Muslims from surrounding areas free of charge in their hospital. The PLO and other terrorists repaid the Christian kindness with barbaric savagery: The Massacre and Destruction of Damour 'The attack took place from the mountain behind. It was an apocalypse. They were coming, thousands and thousands, shouting 'Allahu Akbar! God is great! Let us attack them for the Arabs, let us offer a holocaust to Mohammad 'And they were slaughtering everyone in their path, men, women and children.' Whole families were killed in their homes. Many women were gang-raped..." http://www.free-lebanon.com/LFPNews/psa/psa.html Satanic acts were perpetrated on Damour Christians.

is it not very odd to read and see reports from all over the world about the attorcities of the IDF Israeli devestation forces becaue all they been doing so far devestating Lebanon, and yet denied and most of all justified by the Israeli war criminals, i find that so odd, but i know why , becasue it really hurts the sympathy with Israel becasue for that sympathy they derive their strength not state of at weapon as they claim, u see Israel is based and buit and established by thew world by this sympathy which I must comend them for soding so, unlike Arabs could not get part of this world sympathy because we could not do so, we are not good at whining and capitlizing on our disasters, i really must hand it to u pro israeli public u are doing a great job in that regard, us see u have the old man Peres who is ur mat fr the world to be wiped off by , he is good at getting tears and sympathy from the world, but u see no matter what u do, u can not hide the sun with ur stinky bloody hands, the truth one day will prevail and all ur sympatheiszers will no longer give it to u , Europe latelly veiewd u as the #1 threat to the world, oh well u will hit me with the antisemite bull shit, well i say spare me the crap. finally, what goes up must come down, u live by the sword u die by the sword

69. HRW
Yana ,   Israel   (08.03.06)
May the HRW be honest to admit: it is the Lebanon government that violated the human rights of their people. Legitimizing Hizbala terrorists as an integral political and economic power, the impotent government put at risk peoples' lives.
70. HRW is part of the terror infrastructure
Larry ,   Eastbourne, UK   (08.03.06)
Because HRW and similar groups have a purely anti-Israel hate agenda, and act not impartially as a true human rights organisation would but rather as propagandists for terrorists, they should be considered part of the terror infrastructure.
71. Human Rights Watch Goal: PREVENT JEWS RIGHT OF SELF-DEFENSE
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (08.03.06)
72. Human Rights Watch support for terrorists
Ana   (08.03.06)
According to Professor Gerald Steinberg of Bar Illan University: The international human rights framework was created in response to the horrors of the Holocaust and embodied in the Nuremberg trials and the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. But going far beyond simple irony, this idealistic framework has been hijacked to justify the Palestinian terror campaign against Israelis. At the same time Israeli victims of the latest Palestinian bus bombing were being buried, HRW's ideologists denounced "Israel's West Bank barrier" as a grievous violation of human rights. While claiming to speak in the name of humanitarian principles, HRW officials have been abusing these norms in order to play an active role in the public-relations campaign to demonize Israel. The organization's bias against Israel is hardly new. A report from the NGO Monitor (which we encourage our readers to read in full) makes the case of HRW's agenda against Israel: In a study of activities between October 2000 and April 2004, HRW?s reports and activities on Israel were found to be systematically and exceedingly biased. Most of the 103 reports, press releases, letters, photo essays and film festivals focus on condemning Israeli responses to terror, in comparison to only 13 that deal with Palestinian terror attacks. This record illustrates HRW?s exploitation of the rhetoric of universal human rights in order to pursue political and ideological objectives in concert with international demonization of Israel. The bias of HRW becomes clear when reading any of its reporting on the Middle East. In their latest annual report, they dismiss the fact that Israel removed all civilian and military personnel from Gaza, and that Gaza now has its own border with Egypt. They protest Israel’ military operations but fails to mention the cause, the continual rocket fire from Gaza targeting civilians
73. GOOD POINT
J Marie ,   USA   (08.03.06)
Sim , Lebanon/Australia said: "We DONT HAVE AN ARMY!!! If they are able to damage the IDF one of the most powerful armies what do you think they would do to the lebanese? " This is obviously the case. Which is why a robust multi-national force is so desperately needed. Israel, on the other hand, has no choice but to defend herself. I do not believe that Israel wishes to harm civilians. I just believe they want to find the wasp nest and destroy it. If Hezbollah truly wants to be taken seriously by the world in all that they say they believe in, they should swallow their pride, put down their weapons, and focus on their political aspirations. It worked for the IRA and England.
74. HRW anti-Israel and anti-Jews agenda
Ana   (08.03.06)
In a study of activities between October 2000 and April 2004, HRW’s reports and activities on Israel were found to be systematically and exceedingly biased. Most of the 103 reports, press releases, letters, photo essays and film festivals focus on condemning Israeli responses to terror, in comparison to only 13 that deal with Palestinian terror attacks. HRW’s systematic condemnations of Israeli policies erase the context of Palestinian violence, and when terrorism is mentioned, it is marginalized, and not reflected in action items. HRW also ignores systematic anti-Israel incitement to hatred and the glorification of terrorists. HRW has not issued a single report on antisemitism, on the role of the Egypt, Syria, and other governments in promoting hatred and violence, or on kidnapped and missing Israelis, including Ron Arad. Through its silence, HRW, belies the claim to universal and unbiased approaches. HRW’s highly politicized advocacy on boundaries and disputed territory extends far beyond the human rights mandate. As a result, HRW has become a party to the Arab-Israeli conflict and a contributor to the atmosphere of violence, and has lost credibility and influence in Israel and beyond. HRW has been a prominent participant in anti-Israel political campaigns such as the Durban conference (September 2001) and the ICJ process (February 2004). HRW reports on Israel repeatedly use condemnatory terminology such as “war crimes”, “collective punishment”, “violations of international law”. The arbitrary use of this language without definition or context clearly reflects political and ideological positions. While over 900 Israelis have been killed by Palestinian terror attacks, HRW has generally failed to use its public relations and press access to issue condemnations and in contrast to the regular HRW condemnations of Israel HRW has served as a major conduit for Palestinian-based organizations that exploit human rights to pursue political and ideological objectives, thereby violating and undermining the concept of universal and apolitical human rights. HRW and affiliated organizations (ICBL) have used staged photographs and manipulated evidence to support a political and anti-Israel position.

76. #65, Thanks for revealing this to the world
Uri ,   Israel   (08.03.06)
It seems nobody think these people can do any harm and that they are regular thinking people with a normal moral compass! Their compass is broken!! These are the neighbors in our backyard and we have been threatened by their terrorist groups for 50 years. Why do so many still fail to understand our side? It is painful for us to see so many innocents killed on both sides for the rampage of Hamas and Hezbollah. Anyone who goes against them gets their lives threatened and the true story never reaches the world news. Thanks for sharing the story with us- it is a horror that nobody in the western world seems to be exposed to because they aren't faced with it everyday. I feel deep sorrow for the people in Lebanon and Palestine who are enslaved and killed by their "own people." We want peace in Israel. We have peace with Jordan and Egypt because terrorists do not attack us from those countries. Peace can happen, but terrorism has to leave the region for the sake of all of the arabs, jews, christians, muslims, and anyone else living here. We deserve a peaceful life and I'm tired of seeing these terrorist groups picking on all of the innocent people with such brutal savage force. and convincing the world to point their finger at Israel. Thank you for your voice Linda. We appreciate you greatly here- you have given a voice to all those innocents crying who can't be heard. Please don't let their suffering be in vain.

The problem with human rights organisations is that they get loads of information from countries which are open - and where human rights activists and organisations can more or less research in freedom and hardly any from countries which lack this openness. In my opinion the human rights organisations should stress this as otherwise it gives a VERY distorted way in - not only - their reports, but also towards the whole world in the first place. And that the human rights council within the United Nations exists of countries who are extremely known of not giving a fuck about human rights - such as Saudi Arabia and China - and having their weekly Israel-bashing, I wonder how much credibility human rights activists will gain from all of this. It's a sad development and something human rights activists and organisations should be aware of.
78. HRW critics need to learn to read
George W ,   Chicago IL   (08.03.06)
The criticisms against HRW on this board are completely uninformed nonsense. Spend 15 minutes on their website and you can find the following: 1. They do condemn Hezbollah for shooting missiles at Israel, and for operating in civilian areas. Read their Q&A on the conflict, right on their front page; they aren`t nice to Hezbollah at all. 2. They always condemn Palestinian terrorism-- for example, they put out a report called "Erased in a Moment" about suicide bombers that was like a court document, meticulously researched, offering no excuses for terrorism, and taking no prisoners. It`s the best work I`ve ever seen about the suicide bombers and their networks. You can download it for free. Every single time a bomber blows up they condemn it. 3. They quite often condemn other governments. They have a search engine-- search any oppressive country you want and you will find dozens of reports and statements. Burma, Darfur, Saddam Hussein, the Taliban, Cuba, Rwanda-- anywhere something's going on, they're on top of it. And every single government responds with the same stupid excuse, whining about how HRW is so biased against (name of country). 4. Kenneth Roth, HRW`s president, is Jewish. If you know how to read and spend any time reading their material, you're either a fool or a liar if you say HRW is some jihadi organization. www.hrw.org

Warrior ,   USA   (08.03.06)
Shame on you for sending your people to the USA where they killed my American Indian ancestors and performed their very own genocide against us. You have the blood of my ancestors on your hands. You were the viscious barbarians and even I don't point fingers at your entire country. You should realize there is great human suffering on both sides of the border and yes, even people in Lebanon have conducted viscous barbaric crimes. See #65 for an example. The middle east is a brutal place. Stop pretending that you understand it. We can begin going back 2,000 years to understand how it became such a mess. Let me assure you, the brutality did not begin when Israel became a State.
80. Lying "Human Rights Groups!!!"
Dr RJP ,   USA   (08.03.06)
It is a documented fact, with pictures to prove it, that (1) Hezbollah "guerillas" dress as civilians, and (2) fire rockets from civilian centers. A dead Hezbollah terrorist dressed as a civilian is counted as a civilian death by these lying miscreants!!! You also know these reports are a pile of dung when there is absolutely no mention of Hezbollah's INDISCRIMINATE BOMBING OF ISRAELI CIVILIANS. Throughout Israel's history, this song has been sung before by these leftist idiots.
81. To 78
Shai ,   Israel   (08.03.06)
1. No they don't, they said it seems they do this and they issued a warning, saying that they were studying the issue and would pass judgment later. 2. Good to hear. But I'd like to hear if they use the phrase "war crimes" with such ease when describing Hamas' actions, as they do when describing Israel's, under similar circumstances. 3. Good to hear, but the issue here was whether their research is based on primary or secondary sources, and it was clearly secondary and it was premature to pass judgment on whether Israel was suspected of war crimes. 4. So what. So are a lot of people who hate Israel.
82. To #78: here is ALL that HRW had to say about Hezbollahj
Dr RJP ,   USA   (08.03.06)
Dear George: I have visitied HRW.ORG frequently in the past, and I can tell you that the criticism levelled on Israel is 1,000 times greater than what it levels on terrorists. Here is the one, and only statement that HRW had to make about Hezbollah: “Attacking civilian areas indiscriminately is a serious violation of international humanitarian law and can constitute a war crime,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, director of the Middle East and North Africa division at Human Rights Watch. “Hezbollah’s use of warheads that have limited military use and cause grievous suffering to the victims only makes the crime worse.” That's it. No direct condemnation of Hezbollah. Just a blanket statement of Geneva protocol. Ther was no mention of Hezbollah's dressing as civilians, holding cvilians against their will, using them as human shields, deliberately inviting Israelis to fire on civilian centers from where they launch their rockets, etc.. There was aslo no condemnation of Hezxbollah for committing the unprovoked act of war on Israel that led to this current conflict. Who cares if Kenneth Roth is Jewish? He and a lot of other self-hating Jews are just as anti-Israel as the terrorists they try to protect. Yes, protect from the same criticism they place on Israel. Hezbollah took the six years following Israel's pullout to deliberately acquire 13,000 rockets whose sole purpose was to kill Israeli civilians. They had six years to hide their weapons in the homes of civilians who are openly supportive of Hezbollah and their attacks on Israeli citizens. Did you ever hear of the phrase, "Accessory to murder??" Well, that appliies to all those "innocent" Lebanese civilians who aid and abet the killing of Jewish women and children by hezbollah. They are every bit as guilty as are the terrorists, and they do not deserve any special treatment. What did Hezbollah do today to Lebanese civilians suspected of helping Israel? They murdered them as collaborators, that's what! These "Collaborators" were the ones who helped the IDF to AVOID civilian residences, and to target ONLY Hezbollah terrorists. HRW has absolutely no understanding of how terrorists ignore all rules of war that Israel follows. Except for the "tsk-tsk" they said in response to finding ball bearings lodged in people and their homes, they mostly turn a blind eye to what is going on. Let me repeat: terrorists DO NOT FOLLOW ANY RULES OF WARFARE OR OBEY ANY INTERNATIONAL LAWS. End of story.
83. RJP- HRW condemns Hezbollah all the time
George W ,   Chicago IL   (08.03.06)
"Here is the one, and only statement that HRW had to make about Hezbollah: “Attacking civilian areas indiscriminately is a serious violation of international humanitarian law and can constitute a war crime,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, director of the Middle East and North Africa division at Human Rights Watch. “Hezbollah’s use of warheads that have limited military use and cause grievous suffering to the victims only makes the crime worse.” That's it. No direct condemnation of Hezbollah. Just a blanket statement of Geneva protocol." Really? That's the only time HRW says anything bad about Hezbollah? Because they have a search function on their website; I searched for Hezbollah and got 54 hits, about half of which mention Hezbollah in passing and the other half of which condemn Hezbollah specifically. They go back to 1992 as far as I can see, and condemn Hezbollah for shelling Israel and even for killing Lebanese dissidents. HRW condemns Hezbollah frequently and doesn't pull any punches. In the summary of the most recent report, which is right at the top of HRW's homepage, they specifically condemn Hezbollah for locating weapons and material near civilians. the summary's not a long document at all; I'm sure you can read it if you want. As for your stuff about there being no innocent Lebanese civilians, umm, there's really nothing separating you from the SS if you believe that. I'm willing to guess that the kids in the bomb shelter in Qana weren't hard-core Hezbollah operatives; they probably couldn't even spell hezbollah. The basic principle of international law is that you shoot those who are shooting at you and leave the rest out of it. Even if they like your enemy, or know someone who fights for the enemy, that's not a capital crime. If they fight for the enemy then they're fair game. If they don't, you can't kill them. This means you have to go in there and separate people out; yes this is more costly and more dangerous, but that's why soldiers take oaths to fight while civilians don't. The SS would destroy whole villages if anyone in the village was part of the anti-Nazi resistance. The Geneva conventions were written to forever consign that type of barbarianism to the past. And there's nothing in the Geneva conventions saying you can kill everyone if you dropped leaflets first.
84. hmm...
Joe ,   D   (08.03.06)
Maybe some of you did not read this article carefully. Here is a quote of the relevant section. "According to the HRW, none of the Israeli attacks documented in the report resulted in Hizbullah casualties or the destruction of weapons. "Rather, the attacks have killed and wounded civilians who were fleeing their homes after the IDF issued instructions to evacuate."" If what HRW says is true, then yes, one can make the argument that Israel has commited "war crimes." In addition, just because a person or an organization detects and points out consistent human rights abuses by Israel's government does not mean he is anti-Israel. To assume such would probably mean you are "prejudging."

87. Do'nt kill innocent people
James Hall ,   Fremont, CA   (08.04.06)
Please don't kill innocent people in any war. You'll lose the 'hearts and minds' of people around the world. U.S. and Israel are two sides of the same coin. How can you say U.S. is always correct and the rest of the world are wrong? Since 1979 Israel has received over $130 billion of US foreign aid. Direct American aid to Israel in recent years has exceeded $3.5 billion annually, with an additional billions through other sources. Israel has been supported almost unanimously in the U.S. congress, even by liberal Democrats who normally insist on linking aid to human rights and international law. Israel’s long record of violation of international law is made possible by the heavy diplomatic support guaranteed by the US. In the past 30 years, the latter has used its veto in the Security Council to protect Israel from international criticism, censure, or sanction, more than 40 times.
88. Hezbollah or civilians`
asga ,   Jakara indonesia   (08.04.06)
Human Rights Watch is so naive; do you think the hezbollah fighters will wear their hezbollah uniforms during war? They maybe wearing civilian clothes carrying guns/arms and once killed , the survivors are instructed to remove the guns, ammunitions and arms from their dead bodies, so that they can claim, the dead/killed are civilians and not Hezbollah fighters. They are wily and ahead of everybody when it comes to propaganda tactics and tools. Hezbollah fighters are also civilians. Please dont be so naive, and stop accusing Israel out of your simplistic mind. The civilians left in Southern Lebanon after the 48 hours bombing lull , are there ,either because they are Hezbollah sympathizers or its hostages to be used as human shields, propaganda tools against Israel for war crime, once they are killed/dead, and as source of 'sustenance' for Hezbollah fighters (as long as they are there, UN agencies will be obligated to send food/medical supplies to these civilians, and of course Hezbollah; thus Hezbollah can continue fighting for months with their abundant food/medical supplies through these civilians in Southern Lebanon

90. So Human Rights Watch doesn't like war, who does ?
D- ,   San Diego, USA   (08.04.06)
I suggest that Human Rights Watch focus on those who like war. Focus on those who build militaries when no one is threatening them (by this I mean Iran & China not Israel & US who are threatened continuously so don't even try to go there). Focus on those who attack others without provocation (like Hezbollah & Hamas). And if you care even one iota about human life, then don't give anyone any incentives or rewards for using human shields, especially by generating propaganda against their opponents when the human shields are killed. Too many kid's deaths are on the shoulders of those who incentivize the use of human shields by providing free propaganda for their use. Human Rights Watch, I can't read your minds, but I hope that at least your intentions are good. But know this: Think what you do and what you say through, because people listen to you. You matter. You have an impact. You may not realize it fully, but you are providing incentives for the use of human shields, and you are contributing to the deaths of children. When you damn Hezbollah, Hezbollah is a shadow organization with dedicated support from Iran & Syria and has nothing to lose, so it will not change anything. When you damn Israel for killing the human shields that Hezbollah is using, it places children, that live within the societies that are aggressors against Israel, at risk. Israel has put enormous resources into avoiding civillian deaths. Please think. Is that who you really want to drag through the mud ? A country that has done everything possible to avoid civilian deaths ? How does that help avoid civilian deaths ?
