3. What a mess
Laurence in Canada, way to miss the point of the article! She's not attacking Mel Gibson, she's lamenting the likely loss of an important movie because Mel is involved with it. Besides, the fact that someone says they're sorry doesn't make everything OK. This is a very slippery slope for Mel to be on .... I'm betting there is tons more about that night, and about what else he has done that never made it to the public, that will make an even BIGGER mess out of all of this. Mel is going to have to take his lumps for this; it was a bad thing and he's going to have to live with the consequences. All of them. And the author of this article is just hoping that one of the consequences won't be the loss of this important film.

9. The story of every Jewish survivor is important. Was Flory's
testimony recorded yet? I'd love to see her on screen. As for Mel Gibson, this may be a good first step towards healing. Anti-Semitism is the most terrible disease.

11. The Blacks Have It Right
One poster says to stop whining about Mel, when Iran's nukes are imminent. Using that logic, every time a prominent person makes a slur against the blacks, there should not be an outcry. After all, blacks are always in danger (in Africa) and elsewhere. In the Sudan, hundreds of thousands have been killed, not to forget the Congo (black against black). So let's get off this idea that there are other more pressing problems. Mel Gibson produced a film which some thought would lead to another genocide of Jews. Thank G-d it didn't.. He has never condemned his more than bigoted father (Holocaust denier). But perhaps, we can accomplish two things. Israel can bomb Iran, and we can sit home and watch TV...and not go to any of his movie productions, Holocaust themes or not. Let Spielberg, make and distribute a film on dead Jews, if he desires some publicity (how hapless Jews were slaughtered by the Germans).

12. Mel Gibson
People are complicated, they get some kind of stressor or several and they get crazy, which isn't helped by the alcohol. Everyone's heard of mean drunks. My advice is to take the good things about him and forgive the bad as much as possible. This is your chance to shine by being concerned yet loving and forgiving. Goals are for him to stop drinking and maybe make a statement cancelling his previous statement and would like to see a prominent Jewish leader reaching out to him with love and forgiveness, Rabbi Eckstein would be a good one. I'm not sure about how to get around the movie issue, but I would like to see it.
Michelle ,   USA   (08.05.06)
13. Forgiving Mel.
I totally agree that Flory's story should be produced. AND with Mel Gibson. Who of us at some point in our lives haven't said or done something that was insulting or hurtful to someone else, later realizing how stupid we were and ignorant. Mel Gibson has admitted that. Isn't it time for forgiveness? The God of the Jew as well as the Gentile would demand it. What Mel Gibson said was horrible. But I believe that he is truly sorry and in his heart he didn't mean it. Alcoholism is a disease. Let's pray for his deliverance from it and a reconciliation between himself and the Jewish people for his uncalled for remarks. When we ask God for forgiveness He doesn't reject us. Who are we to do any less. JMHO

15. Re: Mel's tirade
finally, don't pay attention to everything that is said, so that you may not hear your slave reviling you; for well you remember the many times that you yourself have reviled others. These are Shlomo's words from ecclesiates. Don't words like these mean anything anymore.

16. Re: 13 and 14
As a practicing Alcoholic for 34 years and NOW with 3 years of being Sober, I can tell you that Mel's apology is INSINCERE. Mel has been playing the relapse game since 91. What Mel needs to do is get involved with a AA/NA 12 step program and work it for the rest of his life. I have seen countless drunks say they want to be sober, but refuse to even try. Mel is one of those. Odds that someone working a AA/NA program will continue to stay sober and clean is approx 15out of 100. YES, only 15 of 100 people will remain sober and clean for the rest of their lives. I seriously doubt Mel will be one of those 15. What I do see Mel doing is the Marijuana Maintenance Program which won't work here. Total abstinence of ALL mind altering chemicals is just the start. What #8 wrote is very true. I should know, my name is Mike AND I AM AN ALCOHOLIC

17. Mel
So Mel had a few too many. The drunk driving is worse than his words. This is just a chance for the haters to spew. No one really knows what's inside his head. He was drunk. How many of us have ever said stuff we didnt mean when we were were drunk? Lets see a show of hands. Susan

18. Mel Gibson and Jewish Issues
Mel Gibson is not a Jew. So why does the Jewish Community feel impelled to force Mr. Gibson to change? Usually if I encounter a true anti-Semite in person I ignore them and move on with my time and my wallet. Personally I like Mel Gibson as a performer. If he makes a movie I want to see in the future I will go view it. I have never met him so I have no opinion on him other than to understand through the news that he has a drinking problem. Having worked in bars and been a former drinker myself I know that drunk people say the most stupid things on the planet and drinks bring people into a state of non-conscious behaviour immediately. So if the Jewish community wants to help him let them be involved in his rehab plan and stop bashing his career. As far as his statements on Jews: I have heard many people of all races slam the Jews. I do not like it of course. Nor do I like people slamming Africans, Chinese, Asians, Hispanics and anyone else who is not Caucasian. Also I have heard minorities slam other minorities. All this will not stop until there is a paradigm in thinking. Mel has the ability to help with this by his own power as a movie icon. But the Jews and all the other races better take a look at their behaviour during this. If you nail him up on a cross figuratively then nothing will change. Just more drunken tirades by drunks and more knee jerk reactions to it by the groups they offend. Why not do something radical like making it a crime to slur racial insults and publish the names of the offenders like they do with people who frequent prostitutes in Boston? Why doesn’t ABC have the guts to involve him in the project and at the same time Mr. Gibson can learn more about the people he accused of starting all the wars? They would surely get ratings with all the controversy his arrest has generated. Mel has thumbed his nose at his own success and a race of people that have been more than generous to him when he has needed business from them. If he looses everything he will still have to deal with himself in the mirror every morning. If he skips through this he will still have to look at himself in the mirror in the morning. As my uncle liked to say,” Wherever you go you only bring yourself.” So Mel if you are reading this I hope you do keep your career and I hope you can stop drinking. Your work is solid and you are welcome to stop by for a hike and some company should you visit our area. Don’t give up because you will hit bottom if you don’t tame your demons. Peace-

19. Rescue Flory's Story
While Laura's devotion to Israel is commendable, I can't say it's warranted in this particular situation. But that's beside the point. The point is that Flory Van Beek's story is worth telling. Though I can understand why she might've sold her rights to Mel Gibson, I think it was a big mistake to have done so. The proof is in his drunken meltdown last wk. Now the plug's been pulled on the project & I don't see how Mel can make it. A smart producer would buy the project fr. Mel & get it made. The publicity generated about it will help anyone who produces it. But that will depend on Mel being willing to sell. Given how pigheaded he seems to be I wouldn't be surprised if he'd refuse to give up the project hoping that somehow he can use it to redeem himself. Which would be a shame for Flory since it'll likely mean he'll never make it. So I say to him: "Sell, Mel."

21. Mel, alcohol, and sticks and stones
My father is normally a nice man, and I've seen him bring up stuff he normally didn't believe, when drunk. Some people are jolly drunks, some are down right vicious. I was brought up on God's teachings (New and Old testaments) and I don't know what is in Mel's heart, but I know it's God's job to judge not yours, not mine, not Hollywood or any one nationality.

22. when Mel donates ALL profits
ABC should consider reinstating the project. So long as that anti-Semite will make even 1 penny - Flory's story should remain in the wonderful book she wrote rather than support another Nazi supporter.

23. Mel Gibson
I find it funny and strange that anyone cares what a drunk Mel Gibson says. He isn't shooting missiles at Isreal. And he is not an Isreali protesting the war in Tel Aviv. He was drunk and drunks say stupid things. But he is not the danger. Want know who is? Those who support disengagement. Those who thought trading land for peace. Not you see the results or maybe not because you want to focus on old Drunk Mel.

24. Gibson and Ahmadinejad
Conservative Jews and Christians stood by Mr. Gibson from the beginning of "The Passion or Christ" controversy, all the warnings --- Gibson's father's anti-Semitism and his son's defense of his father ----- notwithstanding. Mel Gibson and Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad both believe the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Sadly, my pro-Israel Christian friends and neighbors are much enamored of the passion story. Had Ahmadinajad himself made the "The Passion of Christ" in all it's gory detail, I'm afraid, like Gibson, he would have also had his Christian defenders and perhaps a few conservative Jewish defenders.

27. Flory's Story
Thanks for lending a voice of reason to the brouhaha surrounding Mr. Gibson. Flory's Story must be aired! I was so touched by your article, I just ordered her book. As for Mr. Gibson, perhaps this is an opportunity for him to grow beyond the legacy of hate passed to him by his father. We are all in recovery from our prejudices.

28. This mini-series is tainted by Gibson
Jews and Christians alike are appalled at Gibson's antics and are refusing to see anything else with his name on it. How then can anyone fathom seeing a Holocaust movie that is produced by this man? I'm supposed to get some warm fuzzy because "two Jewish producers" are involved with this series. Let's not forget that the woman who played Mary Magdalene is also a Jew. Gee whiz, how proud we should be! One doesn't one day declare to the world his contempt for Jews and then have some miraculous awakening of love for them. For goodness sake, the film was in the making PRIOR to his bigoted statements, so what has he learned? Another producer needs to pick this up and show it. Otherwise, I will not see it. It's not like I have to. For one, I can read Flory's book. And #2, her story is my family's story too.

29. Antisemites and their reasons
Do you know why people go antisemite (or anti-jew better) and start denying the holocaust? Because the laws interict them to deny the holocaust. This is a major cause our days. That law is simply nonsense. Noone can interdict you to have an opinion about a thing, being it the holocaust, the thirty years' war or the way the French cook. It is your opinion and it may be right or it may be wrong; by simply expressing it, its truth value does not change. Peoples may feel opressed by such a law, especially that it pertains to a historical fact and history is a science. It is as if the laws would interdict recognising the role of gravitation in the universe - or interdict denying Newton's law. Both ways it is silly. Maybe there has been done too much in this matter. There is surely no law interdicting denial of the mass murders that the turks have conducted against the armenians and the world hasn't heard of armenian genocide deniers. There may be such persons, but they lack public conscience to allow them to say what they think; in other words, the lack of such a law regarding armenian history means that no denier of this kind can be popular. And the history is left to make things clear - which is exactly what it does. Now I do not mean there was no holocaust, just in case this may be understood. I think that the Nazis wanted to exterminate jews and other peoples and did much in this direction. I am not an antisemite; I really have better things to do in my life. It reads like a disclaimer, isn't it? :) I simply observe that too much is done against deniers, which are not so important - history is not shaped according to opinions, but studied and this is done by serious historians. Regarding Mel Gibson, you probably would not imagine what a drunk man may say, even against his own religion. So drop it, the man was dead drunk. Forgive him and leave the whole story go down. It is not so important - even Mel Gibson is not so important to remember a few mumbels he uttered. To put it straight, the whole issue bears little importance and it is best to be left behind.
Aquila ,   Romania   (08.06.06)
30. Mel, too, is human.
Mel Gibson strikes me as a man whose rational mind is aware that his heart has accepted unclean programming hook, line, and sinker. I say let him do the job. It will be a good way for him to *start* making amends.
