Most of the criticism against Israel has been based on Lebanese and Hezbollah claims thaqt only women and children have been killed by Israeli airstrikes. The media knows full well that many of the incidents are staged. Yet the media does nothing about it except to gleefully publish accounts that make Israel look bad. The way to min imize this damage is to get the war over with by massively attacking Hezbollah and clearling them out to the Litani River. What Israel is doing now is helping Hezbollah gain prestige, causing unnecessary casualties among Israeli troops, and subjecting Israeli civilians to hundreds of Hezbollah rockets per day. Get it over with and win. But Olmert is ignoring the advice of his military commanders because removing Hezbollah from so much territory and then having the rockets stop would show that his disengagement policy is a fraud. Remember, Olmert has little military expertise and for him to constantly disregard advice from his generals is criminal. If he didn't want to fight to win, he shouldn't have reacted to Hezbollah pressure.

American and British bombers nearly flattened this city during WWII. Might just explain why they won the war. Worrying about civilian casualties is a good thing, and it is always painful for all involved when they get killed. The thing of it is, there are times when leveling areas is unavoidable in war to get it moving along at a more rapid pace. When/if Israel encounters difficulty in taking an area, let the IAF flatten it - then move on!

Listen, the US typically uses no oil from the Middle East. There is enough proven coal reserves in the state of Indiana to power the US for 600 years. That says nothing of Alaska or WYoming or ... There is exploratory drilling going on in Colorado to test for a deep pool of oil equal to or greater than all the oil in the persian gulf. Many of our offshore oil reserves are untapped. That said, I don't know the logistics of the IDF going further north? Seems to this observer that Iran will just ship more deadly rockets. (Through Syria). Israel's ace in the hole is taking out Lebanon's infrastructure (killing their economic life-and tourism). Also, some would talk to Syria, I would bomb it and Iran RIGHT NOW, with bunker busters..and maybe a few tactical nukes. Israel, you have failed to impress the Arabs with this war. That's because only the loss of territory really matters to the Arabs in the long run. So ANNEX at least part of the land your soldiers gave their young lives for, and never, ever give it back. I see no good reason why the Golan Heights is annexed but Shaba Farms is not. Syria relinquished its claim there years ago and of course Lebanon never owned it. So Israel had the strongest claim to Shaba Farms even before the war started. But Israel's rights go well beyond Shaba Farms. Hezbollah targeted you and forced you into south Lebanon. Now that your soldiers have fought and died to take the Hezbollah areas there is no reason why you should ever leave. Lands gained in a defensive war are forfeit, like the Golan Heights and eastern Jerusalem. The same logic applies to the northern Gaza Strip which is used as a base for rocket attacks. Liberate it and annex it, and invite back all those disengaged people who were wrongfully thrown out of their homes last summer. Land for peace needs to work BOTH ways, or be abandoned altogether. Israel needs to balance this equation NOW.

I agree with your post. I observe that Nasrallah did not try to start this War (invading Israeli territory, killing Israeli soldiers, and kidnapping Israelis, when former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon had his health. General Sharon would have known what to do, and how to respond.

Pavel, I'm surprised really...can't you see the common thread in Hizbullah, Hamas, al Qaeda and the "freedom fighters" from Chechniya ...?
