31. Israel's Last Chance
Ken Roberts ,   NY   (08.12.06)
Israel has reached a point of no return. It must either renounce the Zionist program of a "Greater Israel" for which it has been waging aggressive wars for 58 years. What is not yours can no longer be taken by force. This will no longer stand. Israel must change its basic values and realize that it will never be a great nation. It has neither the natural resources nor the population to achieve such an impossible goal.
32. To #11
Ed ,   Boston, USA   (08.12.06)
While I share your reservation regarding Israel's success (not much, in my view), we clearily differ in our attitude towards Israel. I love Israel, you hate Israel! What face are you talking about? The face you see in the mirrow?
33. Olmert
Yisraeli   (08.12.06)
Olmert and the Government will not survive long. They will be toppled by years end then caretaker Gov, new elections March/April thats my prediction. Only question will be whether we will have a viable and worthy candidate for PM by then. This also spells the end of the Kadima party, not a day too soon. If only we can finally rid ourselves of all these dangerous treacherous and useless politicians.
34. Truce?
Jerry Ecklor ,   United States   (08.12.06)
Someone needs to put Benjamin Netanyaha back in office, this guy is a joke! What about the soldiers that were kidnapped? Or the soldiers that have lost their lives from this offensive, did they give their lives for nothing? I wish someone would come back to reality & wake up! J.
35. Ceasefire Resolution
Martin Baker ,   Philadelphia,PA USA   (08.12.06)
Peres said: "...without a diplomatic ending, the military pressure would have been pointless." If Israel's soldiers are not returned and Hezbollah not disarmed the military incursion will be rendered pointless in its entirety; it will only be remembered for television images and photographs of dead Lebanese civilians. Hezbollah did not publicly agree to 1701's terms and is therefore under no obligation to comply with it's demands. Will an international force prove more successful in forcing that complicity? If it does military force will be the triumphant factor, not diplomacy. In any case Israel has lost a great measure of military respect under her current leadership. This is a fact which doesn't bode well for her future against an enemy strengthened in confidence and more unified in ideology as a result of her current indecisiveness in foreign policy execution.
36. The only thing Hizbullah ahieced is destroyint Lebanon.
Mike ,   Israel   (08.12.06)
37. Olmert time to step down your not suited to run Israel
Mike ,   Israel   (08.12.06)
38. RESIGN NOW OLMERT
Jerry ,   NYC, USA   (08.12.06)
You and your cowardly Kadima/Labor government have brought defeat and shame to Israel, losing the first war ever in Israel's history. You are a disgrace to Israel and the Jewish people. Take the clowns Peretz, Perez, Livni and Mofaz with you and LEAVE THE GOVERNMENT.
39. WHY Israel has WON this war:
Maurice ,   Montreal, Canada   (08.12.06)
It is true that the Hezbollah is still out there and Nasrallah still alive. However, even without considering the gains obtained via the UN resolution the outcome of this war is still a victory for Israel. Here is why: 1. The Israeli military response to the initial Hezbollah agression that started the war was so ferocous that the Hezbollah confessed that they were not expecting it, and even if the Arab world and the Lebanese people say they support Hezbollah, it is clear that they are very angry at Hezbollah for starting this. This simply means that even if the Hezbollah might not be disarmed they will NOT DARE again provoking Israel fearing a similar thunderous response which they never expected. 2. Because of the Israeli response the Lebanese people have suffered so much that they have now come to the clear realization that the Hezbollah must be disarmed. Most Lebanese commentators I have read are clearly calling for the disarming of ALL militas as the most important post-war action to focus on. Therefore, as far as Israel's security and strategic goals are concerned it can be said that it is a big success. There was no more point on continuing this war and have more casualties. This strategic success is then due solely to Israel military reaction. Omert understands this and that is why he has accepted the UN agreement.
40. where's 1559?
Jeff ,   Philadelphia, USA   (08.12.06)
Isn't this the UN resolution that already exists, which states Hezbollah should be disarmed? We now have a resolution that allows them to continue to be armed?
41. If you don't live there, shut up
jeanette ,   usa   (08.12.06)
If you don't live in Israel, if you don't have children and grandchildren living in Israel, if all you know how to do is yak and yak and yak and if you want Israel to be hit by Iranian nukes, just keep trashing the government, keep trashing israel, push her people's morale in the toilet, push her spirit into hell, show the people of Israel that you don't believe in their choices and just keep trash talking as if anything anyone of you says makes a difference--the difference is that you show the world your stupidity in your comments and that you just don't get it. If you want to criticize the Israeli government, make aliyah and talk with your ballots. Your words are all empty air. And for those evangelicals Xtians who think they love us...ask your priests what you really mean--none of you will be happy until the Rapture--which comes at the expense of every Jewish life in the world. So give us a break. sheesh. Ignorance is not bliss. Ignorance causes death, and you posters are ignorant.
42. Bush & Olmert Surrender
Lee ,   Dallas, USA   (08.12.06)
This is about Israel paying the price for Olmert's indecisive reaction in the first week of the war, and the Bush administration now trying to build the credibility of the U.N. in order to diplomatically address Iran. It's all based on the ridiculous assumption that the U.N. can do a damn thing. This will disaffect may U.S. Republicans (like me) many in the November elections here. It may cost Olmert his job, and the Republicans the House of Representatives.
43. Elie #11
L Reik ,   Bet Yannay Israel   (08.12.06)
Elie- What do you suppose your country (don't know which one, it doesn't matter) was fired upon by an entity publicy committed to your destruction? Imagine further that that enemy has been outfitted and trained by Iran, who is only steps away from nuclear capabiity. Just curious- what do you suggest? Invite them in for dinner? We in Israel have no choice but to defend ourselves. Sorry you don't se it that way. Try it over here- maybe you will change your song.
44. A Successful Failure
Jeremy S. Slavin ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (08.12.06)
The people who failed to conduct the war as it should have been conducted are declaring this favorable to Israel, when if Israel had done its job the only resolution needed would have been 1559. I hope to God Almighty that Israel enters an election season once again, so that the people of Israel can decide for themselves - without this failure of a weak government that has no business conducting wars - whether those who died, died in vain or for something other than the PM's hollow words. Where are the returned soldiers? Oh wait, this resolution doesn't call for their return. It mentions resolutions 1559, 242 and 338 to be implemented - maybe it will work with Lebanon and Syria as it worked with Egypt and Jordan, but maybe it will fail as it did with the Palestinians. Sure, people might stop dying now. But what will happen when the next war breaks out?
45. Open letter: what did we achieve?
Danny ,   Tel Aviv   (08.12.06)
Tomorrow the government will put all wheels in motion in order to declare a political and militairy victory but what did we achieve? Again we leave it to the UN to disarm Hezbollah and stop a new build-up of weapons. The fact is these UN soldiers don't have the authorization to open fire and are as "effective" as UNIFIL. Secondly the UN Resolution doesnt mention the kidnapped soldiers at all. Basically we are back at square one only we lost 85 soldiers doing it. Amir Peretz knows as much of warfare as Donald Duck! All the promises Olmert made will be forgotten within hours after the cease will come into effect except by the family who have made the ultimate sacriface ... To all those who are fighting I am so proud of each and every one of you. You are the reason Israel still exists! DS
46. TRUCE? IT'S A HUDNA, GIVING HOZBOLLAH TIME TO RE-ARM
Nannette ,   London, UK   (08.12.06)
Olmert has to go. He's agreed to a Hudna, except this time, Israel's hands are tied in respect to any future self-defence!
47. What if not ???!!!
Isaac Haskiya ,   Roskilde - Denmark   (08.12.06)
The resolution says: 1- Hezbullah must stop firing katyushas! What if it doesn´t ? 2- Hezbullah must unconditionally return the kidnapped soldiers! What if it doesn´t? 3- No arms will enter Lebanon! What if they do? 4- Lebanese army will establish Lebanese sovereignty, even in South Lebanon, with the assistance of 15000 UN soldiers! What if they can´t? 5- Israel has the right to remain in Lebanon while the Lebanese army + UN take over! What if Hezbullah attacks again ? The resolution stipulates that Israel has the right to defend itself! To those who say that Hezbullah has won: are there any Hezbullah soldiers/militants/terrorists in Israel? No! To those who say that Israel has lost: there are some 15000 soldiers on South Lebanon; how come ??? Think before you comment !!!!
48. What a Waste of Time
Vicki ,   Kadima, Israel   (08.12.06)
I am in shock, how the hell can Peres say we have won, what kind of idiots do Peres and Olmert think we are. What a waste of human life, the destruction that has been caused, the lives that have been disrupted all to go back to square one again. Please we are not stupid, we were meant to finish this once and for all look where we are now. Pathetic, to think that once I was proud to call myself Israeli, not now, look at us, weak weak weak. No I did not want the fighting to continue, but I knew that we had no choice. This is just so frustrating, Omert needs to go, the moustached pathetic strike monger Peretz also has to go, all he knows how to do is disrupt the country by making strikes. Did he get confused with military strikes????. I am just so upset that we have now come to this. Does no-one in our government realise who we are fighting,by withdrawing, we are making ourselves weak in their eyes, which in turn will encourage other hostile countries to invade, as they have seen we have been beaten by a bunch of gorillas. Exceptionally embarassing for Israel, what a sad sad day.
49. LEBANON WILL FALL SOON...AND OLMERT TOO
(08.12.06)
50. George W Bush eats in the hand of those ugly shitty France

52. HALUTZ SHOULD GO TO A OLD PEOPLE'S HOME !!!
Real Zionist   (08.12.06)
53. HIZBALLAH IS CONNECTED TO AL QAEDA. ARE THE USA STUPID ??
(08.12.06)
54. To all Arm Chair Generals - Blame the Likud!
David ,   Karmiel, Israel   (08.12.06)
Yes, the re-arming and consolidation of Hezbollah happened after the 2000 pullout by then PM Barak who then lost the election to the Likud in February 2001! It was on the watch of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, MK Dr. Yuval Steinitz then Chairman, Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Shaul Mofaz, Minister of Defense and of course, the one and only Bibi Netanyahu, Sharon's Minister of Finance and father of the budget cuts! Now, the holier than thou Dr. Steinitz is critical of Olmert who was Trade and Industry Minister. So Dr. Steinitz, don't pass the buck for the mistakes you and your Likud colleagues made in failing to monitor the Lebanon situation after 2/2001. Olmert's only fault was delaying the entry of ground troops. He did this to save Israeli lives, which in fact, he might have done. History, as usual, will be the judge.
55. This might be victory for Israel ...
Arthur ,   Australia   (08.12.06)
The cease fire resolution makes it clear that the Lebanese government will be responsible for all military activity in the South of the country. Ergo the next rocket that Hizbollah fire will be the responsibility of the Lebanese and the Israelis can hold them accountable, which is not the case now. The Arabs have made a critical mistake. Soon the aysemetric war with Hizbollah will be over and a national war against Lebanon can commence. That war can easily be won by Israel. The resolution clears the air. We know who we are fighting after the Lebanese government accept it. We are fighting them!
56. Not so fast
Sidney   (08.12.06)
If Israel had a decent government, it would declare that the cease-fire will not start until its two soldiers are returned. Olmert will declare victory while the whole world will see defeat. He and his ragtag government must be replaced as soon as possible. This is no time for Chamberlain when Churchhill is needed.
57. To Jeanette
Sidney ,   USA   (08.12.06)
Jews all over the world have a stake in the survival of Israel. All one need do is remember the nineteen thirties when Jews could find no refuge from Hitler's persecutions. Therefore, comments from Jews worldwide are approriate.

60. US EU UN BETRAY ISRAEL & All HUMANITY to GLOBAL JIHAD FORCES
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (08.12.06)
Israel's leaders are pleased because the UN resolution is backed by the Jew-hating Arab League and the Lebanese government who colludes with Hizbullah! YNETNEWS (07.30.06) Lebanese PM thanks Hizbullah for 'sacrifices' http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3283763,00.html Hizbullah's goal is the murder of every Jew. On October 22, 2002, Nasrallah told Lebanon's Daily Star: "If they (Jews) all gather in Israel, it will save us the trouble of going after them worldwide." Israelis and all free people are in urgent need of strong Israeli leaders to save Israel and the free world. Thousands of UN Troops are to be deployed. The goal is to prevent Israel from destroying Hizbullah's infrastructure, rockets and missiles - to stop Israel from defeating Iran's proxy, Hizbullah - who fight Iran's war against Israel and all humanity. Israel, on the frontlines of global jihad has been effectively taken out of the battle for the free world! Empowered by the U.S. EU and UN - global jihad marches triumphantly on with no nation to stop it! Iran's proclaimed goal is the destruction of America and Israel. Iran is dangerously close in achieving nuclear capability to execute their genocidal goal. The entire world is endangered by fanatical, nuclear Iran. The ultimate goal is a world subjugated under Islamic rulers.
