Of the "Hundreds" of antitank missiles fired how many were fired at tanks? 19? 99? 299? It makes a difference in the analysis. There are two methods of strengthening these tanks. 1. Treat the steel hull of the tank with electro- magnetic pulse as was done to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. 2. A much quicker fix would be to place boxes of expanded metal around the body and the turret of the tanks as has been done to US tanks in Iraq for a similiar reason. The metal breaks up the shaped charges of anti tank rounds. Lets get with it.
4. Only 18 tanks!

If the total number of tanks that ventured into Lebanon is 100, then the kill rate of 18% (and may be a lot more!) is pretty high, I would say.

because of a built-in anti-Israel bias in the media and with 24 hour news coverage; tank losses were overblown. In all about 60 tanks were hit, with 56 of those returning to service. And that was with thousands of anti-tank missiles being used. The Merkava lived up to its reputation of being the best protected tank in the world.

come on do you really believe 18 tanks have been damaged, you have just proved to everyone that you are liars, we have seen more than 18 damaged with proof of images and videos live on the news so try coming up with a lie people could believe

This article is a nice try at putting a happyface spin on a very messy situation. The tank's defenses against man-carried modern anti-tank missles is lacking BTW: Both the Hezbollah government representatives in Lebanon and the Hamas representatives in Palestine were chosen by the people in a free and honest election. So . . . what happened to democracy in the "New Middle East"?

The entire organization of the northern battle saw huge numbers of armored equipment waiting massing at the border and basically waiting patiently in line like ducks in a shootong gallery. The real damage came from the monumentally indecisive leadership which stalled the armour on the borders. Get rid of those leaders and in particular Plmert Peretz and Peres. These did more harm to our soldiers and armour than the Hezbollah missiles.

What if my freely elected government decides to nuke all the Arabs? Would you salute that as the exercise of democracy? You surely must realize that the election of a government whose party charter includes eliminating Israel cannot be something that Israel cooperates with as though they are dealing with the Women's Auxiliary of the Rotary Club, Fred. Regarding the point about the tanks, apparently the IDF's mistake was to finance a build up of air power (over 15,000 sorties were flown) at the expense of ground forces, since they thought that air power would be more effective while putting less troops at risk. The Israeli defense company Rafael has developed the Trophy system that prevents modern tank missiles (which Hizbollah was not supposed to have - they were supposed to have only the old ones for which the Merkava's armor is adequate) from piercing the Merkava's armor, but the system is expensive and they didn't think it would be a priority to use it since they didn't think tank warfare against modern tank missiles would be necessary against Hizbollah so they didn't prioritize that expenditure. They were mistaken, as their intelligence assessments were wrong. Syria and Iran have cooperated in ensuring that Hizbollah would be well-armed, trained and financed to fight a proxy war with Israel. I think that the reason the commander said what he said is that he needs recruits for the tank forces - but few will volunteer without knowing that the government has given the tanks they serve in the best protection available.

my deep appreciation to mr greenberg for providing details that others do not. 1 400 tanks entered lebanon 2 col moshe kidron refers to his own brigade. 3 a total of 46 tanks were hit .most will be back in operation 4 i do not believe that tanks are the. answer to guerrilla warfare.certainly not to insurgents armed with cornets. infantry should dismount from vehicles well away from the fighting. 5 soldiersshould not have been sent into the villages.mobile artillery should have been used far more generously at point blank.

There is a wrong date separator in your date string; you're using anglo-saxon date format, so there should be slash instead of dot. I mean: "08/28/06" instead of "08.28.06" (which is suggesting "german" date format day.month.year)
