“We cannot check the content of the books every day. But if there is slang and swear words, we will sue them for using the ministry logo,” he said in the eastern province of Van. This quote is from said newspaper article - they mention nothing about them islamicising the books. They will sue if there is slang and swearwords, not for references to islam!

Of course Allah means God in Arabic. Christians throughout the Middle East use Allah. Rabb means Lord and is also used in the Quran as a word for God. In Hebrew there are many words for God that are used, the same goes for English, so to say that Allah does not refer to God, just shows your hatred and ignorance towards Arab peoples and more specifically Islam. Oh and Christians also use the words God and Lord not just Jesus.

Thank you ali for the link to the article. I now take back what I said about the Turkish government and instead add my support to their Minister's criticism of the publishers and translators who take such appaling liberties with European and American literature.

Ari ,   NYC, NY, USA   (09.01.06)
Though your response appears to have a noble intention it is mis-leading. Christians may use the term Allah in Arab countries - because in those countries their lives are at risk for practicing their faith and for worshipping Jesus freely . The Christian God is Jesus. In the Quran Jesus is a prophet who does not become God and does not get crucified as he does in the Christian creed. Jesus as God is a concept that is unacceptable to Jews and Muslims. I am sure that if you are a Muslim you would not refer to your God as Jesus. Orhtodox Judaism obviously rejects both Jesus and Allah as being substitutable for Lord God of Israel. Additionally, Allah originated not as a universal God but as a Moon God who also had a number of daughters. Christians and Jews could not possibly accept such a deity as theirs.
39. YNet reporting Biased?
Bob ,   USA   (09.01.06)
Look at this link: http://www.turkishdailynews.com.tr/article.php?enewsid=52610 Obviously the biased reporter of this article leaves out the fact that the Turkish Minister of Education Hüseyin Çelik is upset about the books. Isnt that an important fact as Turkey is a secular nation? I would not be suprised if the same biased spin to be found elsewhere on YNEt as well.

“If you like Heidi, don't try to Muslimize her; write your own Heidi book,” Çelik said in remarks published in some Turkish newspapers yesterday. He said the publishers would be sued because they used the ministry's logo on the controversial books.

42. Did you guys see the new version of Allah-din (aladin)?
(09.01.06)
In this version aladin smacks his magic carpet right into a mosque. It turns out that aladins pet monkey abu has really been a CIA agent tracking down osama who just happens to be aladins "magic" genie (now magic genie is really slang for crack dealer but hey!! you say tomatoes I say tomatow's). Sometimes I wonder why I never became a script writer....

44. #38 (Origins of Jewish God(s))
Dan ,   USA   (09.01.06)
Ari, be careful lest ye stir up the origins of the Jewish God. In ancient Caananite there were many El's (gods) and the Jewish God is El Elyon (the highest of the gods). The highest El fathered many gods as well. also, it is written that the Hebrew god (i'll leave him nameless so not to offend anyone) slew Leviathan (Isaiah 27:1). Hmm... so did Baal. If you want to read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_%28god%29

46. once upon a time in arabia
(09.01.06)
Once upon a time in a make believe land far far away named palestine there lived a nasty tyrant named arab-fat (arafat if you want to seem politically cool). Now arab-fat was so bad that he not only pissed off pretty much everyone but he was also a chronic liar. His successor Pinocchio (one of the saudi princes we're not really supposed to talk about) was on vacation in Tel Aviv surfing (wood children have rights too you know!!!) and trying desperatley to pick up some kapara's. Anyways arab-fat uped and died suddenly after chocking a pretzle!!!! Or was that Bush?? So Pinnochio was forced to go the UN as a huge debate over who would take over occured. It was a close call between Pinocchio and Hamas (aka SAM, stupid alliance of morons). Pinocchio in fact almost won. Sadly though hamas got everyone high during election day and usurped poor old woody boys aspirations for world domination. the moral of this story is.............. making stupid nonsense is loads of fun (no wonder those kooks love making whacky stuff up in the ME).
47. RESPONSE TO #44 Dan
Ari ,   NYC, NY, USA   (09.01.06)
Dan, I am very comfortable in stirring up the origins of EL. This terminology is used in Torah to refer to the God of Israel - and it also used for gods of other nations as in "Eloha" "Elohim" "Elohayhem" in reference to gods of foreign nations known as Goyim. There isno doubt however that the references to the El of Israel is to something that does not match you wikipedia reference but rather to the Creator of all - a singularity that cannot be defined in human terms. I thank you for your consideration, but you need to differentiate between text, midrash, and agadah, and any ensuing exegesis based on any of these sources.
48. #44 The JEWISH G-D is the CREATOR of the Universe
Linda Rivera ,   New York   (09.01.06)
The One great G-D has no origins - no beginning. G-D has always existed. Dan you get your information from wikipedia. It is necessary to go to the Bible for information on the One true G-D The Hebrew Bible is forever. The very essence of Judaism - Deuteronomy 6:4, is for ALL TIME and ETERNITY. The greatest scripture: Hebrew Bible, Deuteronomy 6:4: "Hear, O Israel! The L-RD is our G-d, the L-RD is One! You shall love the L-RD your G-d with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." G-D's requirement for ALL humanity is KINDNESS. Hebrew Bible, Micah 6:8: And what does the L-RD require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your G-D.

BouSameer ,   Lebanon   (09.01.06)
My intention was not to show that Moslems, Jews and Christians had the same interpretation of the nature of God. I know they don't. It's about translation, not theology. "Allah" translates into "God" in English. Whether Moslems think that God has daughters or whether Arab Christians use the term "allah" out of fear (both claims ridiculous btw), does not change the translation.

http://www.turkishdailynews.com.tr/article.php?enewsid=52523 Minister lashes out at publishers for scandalous books Monday, August 28, 2006 ‘If you like Heidi, don’t try Muslimize her; write your own Heidi book,’ says Çelik, announcing that the Education ministry will sue publishing houses ANKARA - Turkish Daily News Minister of Education Hüseyin Çelik has blasted publishers for distorted versions of books included in a reading list recommended for school children and announced the ministry would bring lawsuits against the publishers involved in the scandal.  “If you like Heidi, don't try to Muslimize her; write your own Heidi book,” Çelik said in remarks published in some Turkish newspapers yesterday. He said the publishers would be sued because they used the ministry's logo on the controversial books. The scandal concerning translations of the books was uncovered when the daily newspaper Radikal recently published citations from the books included on the “100 Essential Readings” list, comprising children's and world literature as well as Turkish classics recommended to school children. Some publishers had inserted Islamist ideology into the translations, making alterations in such classics as Hugo's “Les Miserables,” Spyri's “Heidi” and Collodi's “Pinocchio.” Some of the books on the list, printed with the ministry-approved logo, were either distorted to reflect the publishers' often religious ideology or included obscene words and phrases. The scandal grew further when newspapers discovered that a riddle book for kids bearing the ministry logo features brainteasers using obscene terminology, including vulgar language depicting male reproductive organs. Another book -- a dictionary of phrases for kids -- had the meanings of highly informal terms and slang words explained on its pages. The Ministry of Education logo on the books suggest they are approved and recommended to school children by the ministry, but Çelik said his ministry had approved only the list of books to be recommended and not their versions published by private publishing houses.  “We cannot check the content of the books every day. But if there is slang and swear words, we will sue them for using the ministry logo,” he said in the eastern province of Van.

http://www.turkishdailynews.com.tr/article.php?enewsid=52523 Minister lashes out at publishers for scandalous books Monday, August 28, 2006 Translation:  In one translation, Geppetto's little son Pinocchio says “Give me some bread for the sake of Allah,” and gives thanks to “Allah” when he becomes an animated marionette. In Dumas' "Three Musketeers," D'Artagnan while on his way to see Aramis is stopped by an old woman who explains: “You can't see him right now. He is surrounded by men of religion. He converted to Islam after his illness.” Eleanor H. Porter's "Pollyanna" confirms her belief in the Muslim apocalypse, while La Fontaine's fisherman prays using Muslim terminology to catch more fish. Spyri's Swiss orphan Heidi is told by Ms. Sesasman that “praying is relaxing.”  “Invented” phrases employing Muslim terminology were also inserted into classics from masters such as Anton Chekhov and Oscar Wilde.  Parliamentary discussion on recommended books: The opposition has brought the book controversy to Parliament as well. Engin Altay, main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Sinop deputy, submitted a question in Parliament on Friday asking “if the books of shame will be pulled from the shelves of school libraries,” demanding a reply from Education Minister Çelik. The CHP deputy's petition noted that the ministry's "100 Essential Readings" list recommended for primary and secondary school students had an “exorbitant emphasis on Islam.” Altay also accused the ministry of contributing to the shameful act of the Ilkbiz Publishing House, which printed most of the controversial books. “Recommending such a publication to schools and students, no matter how old they are, and then not inspecting the content of the book amount to contributing to the shameful act.” Newspapers said Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has warned Çelik to take measures to deal with the scandal, prompting Çelik to order legal action against the publishing houses. Emin Ekinci, a member of teachers' union Egitim-Sen and the principal of Büyük Halkali Primary School, has expressed his opinion that most of the ministry-recommended books had not been examined by the ministry's Training and Education Agency and warned parents to look for the agency's logo printed on books rather than the ministry logo.
52. Not right nor right
Trovador ,   po   (09.01.06)
Not all Christians believe that Jesus is God. This belief came from a council of the catholic church on the Trinity and thus is a catholic dogma that the protestants took with them. I am Christian and don't believe that Jesus is God. When the apostles preached as can be read in Acts, spoke of Jesus as a servant of God. The Bible doesn't contradict it self. There says that there is only one God the Creator. people who used a couple of verses out of context can make other people less aware beleive in all sort of things. Beware
53. "Converting" literature will make the world culture poorer!
Georgie ,   Dreieich, Germany   (09.02.06)
What a good idea! In Germany we have to convert Nasreddin Hodsha, Harun Ar-Rashid and the Chassidim to Christianity: Nasreddin Hodsha will become a priest, Harun ar-Rashid has to swear by God the three in one and the Chassidim of Buber’s stories must become healing monks. But stop: Germany isn’t and never was a Christian country. It‘s new real religion is pure Capitalism. So Nasreddin Hodsha will become the owner of a PR office or a comedian, Harun ar-Rashid has to swear by the Deutsche Bank - because she pays in cash - and the Chassidim of Buber’s stories must become highly paid managers which are making money out of nothing on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

"Gay Porn of the Month Club" (you know, the gift that keeps on givin') AND "Mahmood and his 72 Virginians" LOL, you had me rolling when I read that. Thank you for making my day. BTW, all kidding aside, I remember a muslim friend once saying something to the effect that Mohammad may have been gay. I guess that fits nicely with your tongue-in-check comment.

In history when Muslims conquerers take control of land, they immediately destroy the holy sights of the conquered people and errect a mosque on that ground. This is why Jerusalem is considered holy ground by both Jews and Muslims. with that said does this surprise anyone that they would deface literature also? They fully intend to dominate the world in all aspects, including books.... Just a view of things to come.
