"This illustrated chicken has nothing to do with the article" We have it on good sources that the illustrated chicken actually wrote the article.

Before all of these people drive themselves crazy, isn't it true that if you commit a violation like eating food that isn't kosher and it's unbeknownst to you, it's not the same as doing it deliberately? After all, there was no way these people would have expected that a fraud was being committed and they purchased the products in good faith believing they were kosher. I think God will probably give them a pass this time.

yes, this what happens when you intermarry with the goyyim - judaism goes down the toilet!
5.  #3 - They'll get a pass, but their pots won't.
david ,   jerusalem, israel   (09.07.06)
Jews repent, do tshuva on all sins, those commited intentionally or unknowingly. Treif meat renders the pots, sinks, cutlery, countertops, etc, unkosher and they must be kashered.

True it might not be "as bad" but the food was eaten and the post and pans were still used. If your friend is a diabetic and you give them regular candy instead of the sugar free kind whether on purpose or by accident the fact still is that your friend will be hurt since the candy was still consumed.
7. Kashrut organizations are to blame
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (09.07.06)
Organizations that provide kosher certifications are directly and indirectly to blame for this fraud. They are directly to blame because they should have done a better job supervising. They are indirectly to blame because they blatantly lie on their certifications in order to market their service. Many chickens in the US are certified GLATT kosher, even though there is no such a thing as a GLATT kosher chicken. Chickens (unlike beef) are either kosher or not. But they lie to sell. In turn, they created an environment where it is ok to lie for profit which led to this.

Get your facts straight. there are halachic parameters which set down what you have to and don't have to do for hashgachah. Any more is not required by halachah. This man is orthodox which means that he needs minimal supervision. The fact that he did this does NOT change the halachic guidelines.
10. Cookie misses the point
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (09.08.06)
A guy who sold non-kosher chicken is orthodox? Also, you have failed to explain how the OU can market Glatt Kosher chickens when there is no such thing. They lie to you so you can buy the product.
11. Besalel: re: glatt kosher chickens
Jason D. ,   LI, NY   (09.08.06)
Your are mistaken about glatt kosher chickens. It is not true that there is no such thing as a glatt kosher chicken, rather the fact is that in the US, all kosher chickens are glatt kosher. Chickens in the US do not need their lungs checked because of the rarity of leisions that would make the meat not glatt. That is how come you can buy a whole kosher chicken. In Israel, the lungs do have to be checked. So technically, all US kosher poultry can be called glatt kosher. And btw, the OU does not market or sell chicken, they are a kosher supervision agency that permits kosher poultry companies from rightly marking their chickens as glatt kosher.

"how the OU can market Glatt Kosher chickens when there is no such thing. They lie to you so you can buy the product. " Every frum person knows that when something says "Glatt", it means "Higher Standard" Kosher, and not literally "Glatt"

well he won't get kosher certification anymore, but they didn't know about it until they caught him, obviously. And yes, until then he was accepted as an orthodox jew with its halachic reliances.Your comment is chronologically impaired. and this scandal has NOTHING to do with the marketing of glatt chickens - stick to the point.
17. Jason D. is right but, see, comment 12
Besalel ,   Kew Gardens, NY   (09.08.06)
While Jason is techinically correct, just look at comment 12 to see my point. RW thinks that the glatt kosher chickens are "more kosher" than other chickens in the US that are really kosher but not certified glatt. So why do they certify the chickens as glatt if not for the purpose of having you think it is more kosher and therefore you will buy that product over one that is not certified as glatt. We should all insist on more honesty from our kosher supervisors.

21. The real tragedy
Menagen ,   NJ   (09.10.06)
The real tragedy here is that thousands of people were spiritually desensitized by consuming the halachic poison of non-kosher food. We take kosher rules seriously -- very seriously, in fact -- because of the dread we have of the spiritual damage that non-kosher causes.
22. "Kosher" chicken
Phil ,   Zurich Switzerland   (09.10.06)
Many jews are particular on eating only kosher meat, so it's a shame that the supervisors/mashgichim of kashrus didn't find out earlier; after all theat's their job.
23. to #6
sam ,   jerusalem, israel   (09.10.06)
absolutly not so, your analogy is not way off the mark, if a person did not keep shabbos when ther was a temple, if it was by accident he would just bring a sacrifice however if it was on purpose and warned he would be liable to koras, so i think we can see that their .is a whole lot of differnece between something done willfully and on purpose. H'shem knows the heart of man and acts accordingly. May the redemption be upon us speedily.
24. Re: The real tragedy
Sarah ,   Far Rockaway, NY   (09.11.06)
Non-kosher only causes spiritual damage when done so knowingly, there is no magical "poison" to eating non-kosher food if the one eating it is unaware.
25. Didn't IB Singer have a story about such a thing?

no one turned green. they all lived and continue to live. isn't this a testament that all the kosher laws are really unnecessary?
