Josh   (09.17.06)
Odd that the Muslims who mymic the behavior of the Nazis now threaten the Vatican. After their help in giving Visas after WW2 I guess what goes around comes around.
3. "We will blow up all of Gaza's churches."
sk ,   USA   (09.17.06)
I didn't know there were any churches left in Gaza. The Muslims expel Christians, after all.
4. Uh Oh Europe
Toni ,   USA   (09.17.06)
is in deep doo doo. The repercussions of the Pope's words will be devastating. Much more so than that of any other leader of any country or faith. Gaza was already on its way to extinction, so no new concerns there. God bless all the peace loving people in Europe of all faiths and God bless Israel!

7. The Muslim Leaders are Proving the Pope Right
Nannette ,   London, UK   (09.17.06)
They're making death threats, promising to blow up churches and persecute Christians. This is EXACTLY the violence the Pope was talking about in his comments on Islam.

Rita ,   Israel   (09.17.06)
Al last somebody opened his eyes and the eyes of the Free World to the danger called: Islam. The Pope's words should be taken as a warning before it is too late. Those who fear the fanatic Muslims and yield to them- will let the sword spread unstoppably. Don' t say you were not warned !!! God bless the Pope !
10. the pope spoke the truth and islam proves him right
tommy ,   belfast uk   (09.17.06)
His Holiness was speaking the truth - from its very inception islam has been spread by the "Sword" .... Sura 9 abrogated all the peaceful medinan verses Millions were murdered during the indian holocaust-- http://www.hinduwebsite.com/history/holocaust.htm --islam has murdered its way through the pages of history even the crusades were a defensive action against the murder of christian pilgrims---right up to the "Armenian genocide" where one and a half million were murdered http://www.umd.umich.edu/dept/armenian/facts/genocide.html I have tried to tally the figures for this year alone (The statistics for muslim murders in the name of islam can be found at http://www.thereligionofpeace.com/ ) 3386 murdered and 5138 injured .....all in the name of islam (the injured figure does not take in those who may have died later from their wounds)

14. #5 - He did not apologize Cleo ...
Truth ,   USA   (09.17.06)
"Pope stops short of apology" He feels bad Muslims are upset - but he stands by his words: "characterizes some of the teachings of Islam's founder as "evil and inhuman," the Vatican said Saturday. "...the statement stopped short of the apology demanded by Islamic leaders around the globe, and anger among Muslims remained intense. Palestinians attacked five churches in the West Bank and Gaza over the pope's remarks..." http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060917/ap_on_re_eu/pope_muslims God bless all Muslims with Jesus Christ.
15. Welcome to the club
Dave ,   Munich   (09.17.06)
This pope must be a very ignorant man: Where was this pope during the conflict about a silly little newspaper in denmark? Anyway... hey catholics, the muslims hate you? Welcome to the club.
16. the idiots who claim to be sensible, true Muslims......
former 60's idealist ,   Florida   (09.17.06)
First off, where do you primitive lame brains who claim to be righteous Mulslims come off critisizing (and demanding an apology) Pope Benedict when all he did was offer for intellectual and historal "discussion" a quotation from a religious scholar made over 500 years ago. I say call a spade a spade, if it is true, accept the truth as historical reference and deal with it. You get angry because Benedict refered to someone saying that Mohammed was into violence ~ duh, you stupid bastards! The sollution to redeem Mohammed's legend that he was NOT into violence hardly seems like his followers/believers setting churchs on fire and shooting to kill anyone who is not of the Islamic faith, or worse yet, killing your own people with bombs. You want to have the world live in the 15th century again, crude and primative, yet you object violently to (as mentioned above) scholars of the period's comments simply being quoted. This is no different than the Jews in Hollywood takinjg offence and getting crazy when Marlon Brando made a comment that the "Jews run Holllywood". As a response, the JDL and other Jewish groups/individuals then came to the press and said "he's never work in Hollywood again"! Well.....???? What's wrong with telling the truth??? Why do blacks call each other niggers, whores and bitches, and every other word from the black masses seems to be "shit" yet they demand respect and "political correctness" when a caucasian refers to them. Instead of reflecting back on the history of their culture in music, i.e. the blues, they choose to rap about 'cappin' somebody and many other things that I prefer not to even think about as they jerk around with their ass hanging out of too big shorts, tripping on shoelaces. Call me whatever you want, I'm just saying it like it is ~ give welfare people a broom and paintbrush before they getr their checks, ask for an expired military ID card blown up for a junker or alcholic to put it on cardboard at extir ramps that he is a Viet Nam vet and then give him a map (and a ride, be kind to real vets) to daily workforce/temp day workers stations so he could actually work to build some self esteem instead of riding the backs of those who feel sorry for him. If he served in the Nam, then he is certainly capable of working a basic job. Lastly, we should impeach Bush for selling our country to the Chinese, chasing oil in the mideast and putting us in a fiscal situation that is potentially ruinous to our financial welfare and future generations of Americans. I could go on and on, but this is enough for the moment. What ever happened to men like Roosevelt and Regan? Is there no one out there who is willing and capable of running this country effectively while still having the respect of the rest of the "free world"? What ever happened to peace and the willingness to communicate? On a closing note ~ if the publishers of this blog think that I am out of line in my comments, please refer to the 1st Ammendment of out constitution and think about it again, lest you end up washing the feet of sandal wearing terorists and kneeling on prayer rugs to stay alive.
17. Politics/Religion comment
Dave ,   Ottawa, ON, Canada   (09.17.06)
"The Pope spoke like a politician rather than as a man of religion," Erdogan said. Unfortunately, he has no choice. Islamic nations have blurred the line between politics and religion. If they don't want the Pope to interfere in politics, their Ayatollah's should not interfere in politics.
18. Why aren't we all outraged?
Sarah ,   Rolla, Missour, USA   (09.17.06)
I'm a protestant Christian, and I found the pope's words highly offensive. How could he not know how that would be interpreted? How does he expect any reasonable person to believe his interpretation of that? It seems like the church is forgetting its past--crusades, anyone?!?
19. You have to love the irony of this, on multiple levels.

20. Pope Benedict
anthony amoroso ,   Rochester USA   (09.17.06)
So the MOSLEMS are upset withh the Pope. How come they weren't upset when a MOSLEM tried to assassinate John Paul II? As to threats of war, where the hell have they been since 2001? We ARE at war started by their LOONEY crowd. So much for the "Religion of Peace" Don't choke on your own spit or anything.
21. A brave POPE
anthony amoroso ,   Rochester USA   (09.17.06)
Amen,brother.
22. God of Peace
Missy ,   USA   (09.17.06)
If Islam shares a God of Peace and not violence- then Muslims need to denounce all violent acts in the name of their religion. Otherwise what is the world to believe?
23. We have come to a cross in the road,
GOD ,   ALL   (09.17.06)
All life has God with in it. Pain and sorrow makes you ask why you are here. You will not find the truth with more suffering. Try Foregivness,& better Listening.
24. The Pope and Radical Islam
virginia ,   westmont usa   (09.17.06)
Don't Islamic men ever work? My husband does not have time to demonstrate in the street all the time like they do! They are so violent. Wake up, World, to the danger we are in with Islam.
25. Even dialogue and discussion impossible?
Anthony A. ,   Chicago, USA   (09.17.06)
In the academic sense, the pope has the right and duty to cite events of Western civilization and the heritage of Christianity. Constructive criticism about the desperate state of affairs in much of radical Islam, is in the spirit of hope - and prayer that there is something better for the peoples of those regions. Do these regimes in the Middle East have any work for the people aside from the rent-a-mob scenes that seem to develop over every last sensitivity? In moderation... zeal can uplift people. In comments echoing Pope John Paul II's teaching, Pope Benedict XVI recently told a gathering that Christ and the Gospel must be preached "from the rooftops" because people "are thirsty for (the truth) and they cannot be left to languish" in search of spiritual nourishment. In contrast, unholy fervor can bring entire regions down to the unhealthy level of street mob loitering, which makes real inspiration and education a human impossibility.
26. What was his intent when he stated?:
Joshua ,   USA   (09.17.06)
"Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman." I think it was propaganda to show that Christianity is better than Islam.
27. #10
Joshua ,   USA   (09.17.06)
Are you justifying a prominent leader’s word using 600 year old statements? Let’s say for argument sake I tell you to your face and without any provocation that your mother was a prostitute and you are a violent man, what would you do? You don’t have to answer this, because different people react differently. So a smart and civilized man especially a leader should not be saying offensive statements like that.
28. Pope's speech
suemo40 ,   Lincoln USA   (09.17.06)
Hmmm, the Muslims don't appreciate him saying they are violent and spread their religion by the sword. But look how they act when they feel they have been treated unfairly, it seems to me all they know is how to be violent. Actions speak louder than words.
29. Pope
