2. The Pope can't be wrong-definition!
Inyaki ,   Bilbao, Basuqe   (09.19.06)
By definition, the Pope can't be wrong, he is a representative of the Lord on Earth and he speaks Gd's wishes to the people. So how on earth can he be wrong? A chief Rav of Israel can be wrong- but not the Pope, no way the Pope can be wrong.
3. SELF AGGRANDIZING BIGOT

HE CAN MAKE MISTAKES JUST LIKE THE REST OF US IN MUNDANE MATTERS.
6. Pope
Jake ,   NYC, USA   (09.19.06)
Your ignorance and sarcastic tone both scream out for correction. The Pope IS infallible when teaching through doctrinal statements that have been painstakingly worked on within the Magisterium. If you ask the Pope what time it is, and he incorrectly says 2:45--because his watch broke at that time--it does not mean that the rules of time and space have changed. Sarcastic ignoramus.

9. He is simply...
The White Shadow   (09.19.06)
...saying what a great many are thinking and afraid to say. Leave his religion out of this a moment. Consider what Islam's contribution has been over the centuries. There has been conversion via the sword and slayings via the same sword when conversion wasn't possible. We have seen the oppression of both men and women, with women receiving the harsher treatment, something unwelcome and out of line with civilized societies. The Muslim response to criticism is nothing more than a tantrum, the wailings and lashing out of a small, spoiled child. This culture of death speaks of peace, but it only the peace of the grave in the end. They send women and children out in explosive vests and vehicles, in a vain and insane attempt to destroy what they are jealous of, what their "religion of peace" will never allow them, which is the freedom to live and the joy in which to live it. Islam is a cancer in this world, plain and simple. If it is not cured or removed, it will kill the host by making all of its parts cancerous. Fighting this cancer will be as difficult as receiving current treatments for real cancer. But what risks are you willing to take, what discomforts are you willing to endure, for the chance to live free of the cancer that infects this world? What are you prepared to do?
10. Pope is correct, look at the "peaceful" muslims
Charles ,   Gray Summit, USA   (09.19.06)
They riot, they threaten to murder the Pope, they attack churches, they kill nuns, they "convert" journalists by threat of death....I see nothing peaceful in their religion.
11. Who is next?
enzo ,   london,uk   (09.19.06)
Right or wrong...who knows? But you will agree that he has opened the eyes of millions of BLIND people who believed that Islam was a peaceful religion! Look at the reaction of the muslim world! So...we had the Danes. We had the pope. Who's next?
12. Pope Benedict was spot-on . . .

14. Violence & Islam . . .
James ,   Westminster, UK   (09.19.06)
To say that violence is the preserve of a "few extremists" is a myth. Brutal executions take place daily in the name if Islam, in many countries. N.B. The first stage in trying to solve a problem is to acknowledge it. But world leaders and most of the media don't. Nope. They'd put their heads in the sand in the name of political-correctness, rather than confront the truth, i.e. that violence was written into the Koran from the outset. Moreover, in many islamic countries, if that is questioned and criticised, the punishment for this "insult" to their so-called "Prophet" is death. How nice.
15. Peaceful Koran . . .
G Davies ,   Manchester, UK   (09.19.06)
* Surah Muhammad [47]:3 says “When you meet the unbelievers on the battlefield, strike off their heads…. * Surah Anfal [8]:12 says “I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, strike off the tips of their fingers.” * Surah al-Nisa’[4]:74 says “Let those who would exchange the life of this world for the hereafter, fight for the cause of God….” * Surah al-Nisa’[4]:56 says “The true believer fights for the cause of God, but the infidel fights for the devil.” * Surah al-Nisa’[4]:101 says “The unbelievers are your inveterate enemies.” * Surah al-Ma’idah [5]:51 says “Believers, take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends.”
16. You got it wrong.
USA Nudist ,   New York, USA   (09.19.06)
You got it wrong. "They were nude but they were not ashamed." Furthermore, because God created it, "The human body can remain nude and uncovered and preserve its splendor and its beauty." --Pope John Paul II

Enjoy your stay in the dark ages, shut the crap up about peaceful koran, aint a peacful word in there, not for us infidels anyway. Is there another version we dont know about???
19. Here, I will apologize for the Pope.
Charles ,   Gray Summit, USA   (09.19.06)
I a Christian do hereby apologize to all the Muslims in the world for their inability to grow up and act like adults. I apologize to the Muslims for all the hatred, violence and backward thinking ingrained in them from birth by their ayatollahs, imams, and jihadist "heros". I apologize to the Muslims that they have no clue that this is the 21st century, and not the 12th century. I apologize to the Muslims that the Pope was absolutely, and completely correct with his quote describing the violence and hatred brought to this world by Muhammad your prophet.
20. re: fadi #13
Charles ,   Gray Summit, USA   (09.19.06)
The Crusades were to get control of the Holy Land (namely Jerusalem), not to convert people to Christanity.

22. pope's lecture
leon ,   israel   (09.19.06)
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/bsp/hi/pdfs/15_09_06_pope.pdf In his lecture the Pope raised the long discussed subject of reason and faith. The controversial paragraph can be found already in the third paragraph. In order to, at least partly, understand the quote it's vital to read the preceding two paragraphs. It's very misleading to quote him out of context, because the context makes it quite clear that Islam is non violent, but allows believers to choose violence, if they so wishes. Each individual Moslem can exercise his own free choice as to how, or if, he wants to spread the belief of Islam to non believers. In any case the Koran is only speaking about non believers, which means people who don't believe in the one universal, invisible God but in idols. This means that practically all religious beliefs in the world today aren't religions of unbelievers. The problem really isn't one of Islam but of some Moslem leaders who choose violence and exploit the sincere, deep religious feelings of their Moslems subjects to incite violence and enforce tyrannical rule, like Saddam Husein, Ahmadinajad and dictators of other Moslem countries. As we see from the war in Iraq and Afghanistan it's no easy matter to extract mentally enslaved people from the clutches of tyrants like these.

26. popes are infallible
Mookie ,   USA   (09.20.06)
Dear David Verveer , If you a going to be a journalist, you need to get your facts straight. The Catholic Church does not consider the pope to be infallible. That was a change in the church doctrine prior to 1970.
