Time to talk    Lee Marsden
1. yeah, right - clinton was much more successful
he engaged arafat & co, ignored the terrorism, lies, and complete non-compliance by the palestinians throughout his two terms, and left us with intifada 2, all the agreements in tatters, and everything in worse shape than before. why would bush want to repeat something that was a complete failure and disaster? palestinains do not want peace, so let them become so miserable that peace with israel might actually be appealing to them.

2. Famous Winston Churchill quote
Outraged lady: "Sir Winston, you are drunk!" Winston: "And you're ugly! But tomorrow I'll be sober, and you'll still be ugly!"

3. Hamas and Hezbollah do not want to talk
They want to kill.

4. POLITICS HAS NO ABILITY TO CHANGE PEOPLE
IT IS PEOPLE WHO CHANGE POLITICS, NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. The idea of creating democracies in the Middle East as a way of reforming the Middle East is a foolish misunderstanding of political reality. The Frenchman, Alexander de Toqueville said, "America is good because its people are good; if America's people cease to be good America will cease to be good." That was about 200 years ago when America was a fledgling democracy. De Toqueville was observing an undeniable fact about democracy. Any government, democratic or otherwise, is only as good as the people who are in charge. In a democracy, where the people govern themselves and create their own laws, the government CAN only be as good as the people are collectively. Bush, in a simple-minded way, thinks that democracy makes good people. De Toqueville observed it is the other way around. Good people make a good democracy. Democracy has NO power to make any people good. If the people are, by in large, filled with hatred and anger, they will elect government officials who represent their hatred and anger. The only thing democracy can do for the Middle East is make people responsible for the government they have. So, creating democracies in the Middle East is not going to make anyone less hateful toward Israel or America or less angry about things America or Israel have done or less full of misjudgments about America or Israel. But America will certainly create enormous chaos in the process of overthrowing governments, covertly and overtly. And that chaos will certainly create more hatred and more anger. That's why things look much worse and much less stable in the Middle East now than the did before Bush took office. Going after Osama bin Laden's gang was one thing. That was purely an act of self-defense, and overthrowing the government that gave these thugs safe harbor was fair game. Nation building is entirely another matter, which is frought with peril. There are few success stories in that game ... unless the change comes entirely from within.

6. TIME TO TALK
More fuzzy headed thinking from someone who fancies himself an intellectual. The kind of thinking that will get us all killed.
Dan ,   New Jersey, USA   (09.22.06)
7. Why Marsden is a complete fool:
I agree with much of what was written. Sadly he also wrote this : "By stigmatising organisations such as Hizbullah and Hamas as terrorist, which have legitimately built their reputations on extensive social welfare provision and a lack of corruption".... How foolish. Anyone with half a brain can understand that even a terrorist organization must have some claim to legitimacy. This is a slick way of disguising a despicable agenda with an honorable social agenda. These are the "intellectuals" of the UK?? I am not impressed.

8. A lecturer??
This is an incredible article, showing how far education in the UK has deteriorated. If the ones that lecture dont know what they are talking about there's not much hope for students For a man in his position to be ignorant of islam and to dare to give advice on the subject of peace is inexcusable His ostrich approach constitutes more danger to the west than anything else. Churchill also said about islam . Quote...the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Unquote

9. Let Europe talk to the devil....
while we Israelis DEFEND ourselves... Europe has a long tradition to save their own neck at the expense of others. Just ask Chamberlain and his followers. This time however, Europe is risking to be consumed by its own arrogance and racism. Lee should should welcome Hamas, Hezballah, Al-qaida and all islamo-fascists to the UK and "talk" to them while they consume the Britain we know from within into a Londonistan.
