Aaron Rabinovich ,   Canada   (11.09.06)
We need more democrats Jews as well in Israel. Jew with open mind raised in the west with the true democratic spiritual, not in the former Soviet Union. The Russian totalitarian regime raised one million pathetically extremist Jews and send them to Israel . 2. Jews in congress
dana ,   ny   (11.09.06)
How many are Jewish Jews? Sanders with his shiksa wife is not. At least Trotsky had Jewish descendantsthat ended up in Israel. Electing Adam Shapiros doesn't help the cause.
3. JEWS ARE OVERREPRESENTED, AMERICANS TAKE CARE YOUR DEMOCRACY
Tayfun_Turkey   (11.09.06)
US citizens should take care of such overrepresented minorities like jews. They should not let them represent Israel. In my opinion a national assembly is a place to represent people of the country not aspirations or ideals of another Countries or nations. Jews elected face two choice to support Israeli atrocities and zionism or against them beside all humanity. In case they prefer to support Israel, US citizen should not vote them agin, and vote independent senators who represent their real interests. I think zionism long rooted in both parties and both parties need a real cleanising from such minorities deflecting common US interests.
4. #2 and use of words
Rustum ,   London, UK   (11.09.06)
To refer to Mrs Sanders as his "shiksa wife" is a real indication of your worthless political opinions. A person deserving of living in a great democracy like the US does not refer to the wife of an elected representative as a "shiksa". Perhaps you are too ignorant to know the meaning of the word - but you have demeaned yourself and the Jewish people by using this word. We all look forward to your apology and perhaps a direct apology from you to Mrs Sanders would serve to take the snide and demeaning edge off your worthless post.
5. #1 - I am just as worried about...
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (11.09.06)
...the fundamentalist Jewish republicans from the USA now in Israel, if not more so!
6. #2 what is your cause?
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (11.09.06)
I never liked guessing games, not even as a child
7. Easy there Typhoon Turkey
J K ,   NYC, USA   (11.09.06)
The people didnt get elected so they could be overrepresentative of Jews the US over. They got elected because Jews and non-Jews alike in the various constituencies felt they would do a good job representing their interests in Congress. This is unlike the Middle East where there is no actual representation of the peoples desires...just strongmen in power trying to hang on.
8. To 3
Shai ,   Israel   (11.09.06)
Well, look at that. A Turk giving advice about how the US should beware of it's Jewish elected officials, for fear that they might represent Israel's interests and not America's. I don't think American Jews need to prove that their Jewishness skews their "interests" toward Israel's, as though this is automatically the reverse of America's interests. Israel's credentials as an ally of America are at doubt. But let's look at Turkey's. Once Turkey's Islamist party took over the government of Turkey, America discovered that Turkey was protecting interests more like those that Tayfun identifies with, rather than American interests. Would Israel have refused America overflight rights in attacking Iraq? No. But Turkey did. Would Israel have refused the use of its ports for the American Navy, or its airports for refueling its airforce? No. But Turkey did. Would Israel have refused to allow America to use its territory as a launching area for an invasion against Iraq, if it were adjacent to Iraq as Turkey is? No. But Turkey did. Why, Tayfun? Whose interests does your advice to ignore Israel serve? Is the service of Islamic Fundamentalist terrorists something you think America should stand behind? Apparently, Turkey thinks America should, as Turkey has. The result of Turkey's cheapening the value of their alliance with America is now clear for all to see. Turkey built itself up in the Islamic world by denying America what it needed from its Turkish ally. America was able to attack Iraq primarily only from the south in the Gulf of Arabia, because Turkey wouldn't allow an attack from the north, which would have allowed a pincer attack on the insurgency. The free front to the north kept open a wide swath of unprotected territory, which allowed Baathist Iraqi officials to escape to Syria with their families, and with the money that would fund the insurgency. In short, Turkey's perfidy against America, under an Islamic government of the sort that Tayfun no doubt supports, has probably been the single greatest cause of America's not having already "won" in Iraq. Add to this Turkey's refusal to address the Armenian genocide, the fact that it's refusal to allow a Kurdish state in the north, and Saudi Arabia's refusal to allow another Shiite state, prevented the division of Iraq into 3 countries, which would have won America 3 allies rather than 3 enemies, and you begin to see that the importance that America attached to the interests of TURKEY, not Israel, is what may have pre-destined the morass that is Iraq, and the defeat the Republicans have taken in Congress. So, Tayfun, you aren't in a position to advise America on it's alliance with Israel, as you advance only Turkey's interests. You're completely out of line in assuming that just because someone is Jewish that they support Israel (just look at Tony Judt, Noam Chomsky, and the like), and for sure as a Turk, you are better served by keeping quiet and not drawing attention to your country's perfidy toward your one-time ally, America.
9. counting jews
mordechai ,   jerusalem, Israel   (11.09.06)
If a non-Jewish or non-Israeli media outlet would count the number of jews in Congress, I don't think that we jews would take it in a posative way. What is important is that the new congress, irespective of the number of jews or muslims or members of any other faith be made up of decent individuals who appreciate Israel's historical significance and contribution to world democracy.
10. To 4
Shai ,   Israel   (11.09.06)
Does calling Jews "monkeys and pigs" reflect negatively on all Muslims? I doubt it. Why should one person, who you don't know for sure what her religion is, represent for you what all Jews think or do? Do you see what the problem here is?
11. Any chance of a minyan?
Meir ,   Beit Shemesh   (11.09.06)
Does this mean that if I happen to be on Capitol Hill, and I'm saying Kaddish, that it will be easy to find a minyan? They should build a Shul there, and USE it!!!
12. To #3
Ironcandle ,   Atlanta, GA   (11.09.06)
But you're ok with the Muslim guy in Congress, right? Good speech Shai
13. Democrats now have muslim seal of approval from Minnesota

14. #3
Isac ,   Florida   (11.09.06)
Your ignorance does show, that you even do not know what the definition of a Jew is. A Jew is not a nationality or he does not come from another country, nor is a sort of alien coming form Mars, but a Jew belongs to a specific religion: Judaism, which is by the way the oldest form of religion in existence. When a Jew in America or as a matter of fact throughout the world achieves success, than that is due to his/her intelligence, perseverance and education. If Muslims would concentrate their energies for positive things such as education, love and helping other people instead of hating and killing than they could be equally successful. But we see it in Iraq, Afganistan, Turkey, Indonesia, Pakistan as well as other Muslim countries that the first on the mind of a Muslim is Honor (killings), revenge, killings in the name of Allah and the hate for Jews and Israel as well as the rest of the civilized world. Why don't you ask yourself, that the EU does not want to have your country as a permanent member?
15. #10
Rustum ,   London, UK   (11.09.06)
Ms Dana made no reference to the use of monkeys and pigs. Calling the wife of an elected representative a "shiksa" has no bearing whatsoever on what the phraseology of some idiots. However, possibly in your world two wrongs make a right. In my world, and the world of decent people, the use of the word "shiksa" is literally an abomination. I simply don't care what Dana's religion is - but I would be pretty sure that no gentile and no decent Jew uses the word "shiksa" unadvisedly. If you have no problem with the word, then you have issues with humanity and I suggest you go speak to a rabbi.
16. To 15 - apparently my comment went over your head
Shai ,   Israel   (11.09.06)
Just as you would unlikely draw conclusions about all Muslims because some call Jews "monkeys and pigs", you shouldn't draw conclusions about all Jews ("you have demeaned yourself and the Jewish people") because of the words of one person, who you don't even know is Jewish. Nobody's arguing that "shiksa" is an epithet, least of all me. I'm pointing out to you, apparently to your great resentment, that you are guilty of the same bigotry you are quick to find in others.
17. Jews in Congress need a loyalty test...
Gene ,   Raleigh, USA   (11.09.06)
In fact only Constitutional scholars should be allowed to serve. Americans never are given a chose for representation, those days are over.
18. To 17
Shai ,   Israel   (11.09.06)
All members of Congress already take an oath to protect the Constitution. And, quite a large percentage of constitutional scholars are probably Jewish, by the way. Maybe you have a different message you are trying to give us?

M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (11.09.06)
If a former Austrian with a real bad accent can run the State of California and put its interests first, we trust that most everybody else, be they black, white, Jew or Gentile, Christian or whatever, can manage to look after the interests of the US first, too. When it becomes obvious that they can't or won't, they usually don't last long in whatever office they hold. We quietly relegate them to their private lives where they can rave and rant to their hearts' content and, for all we care, peddle their dog as the savior of the country.
20. Lesson for Israeli leaders
Sidney ,   USA   (11.09.06)
Political and other leaders of Israel think that the only Jewish constituency in the U.S. is in the N.Y. metropolitan area with a branch in southern Florida. I quote this site on the newly elected Jewish congress people below. Only one is from the locus given above. There is better support for Israel among Jews in the "American diaspora" than there is from the liberal Jews of NY. Gabrielle Giffords (Arizona), Ronald Klein (Florida), John Yarmuth (Kentucky), Paul Hodes (New Hampshire), Stephen Cohen (Tennessee), and Steve Kagen (Wisconsin). They are all Democrats.
21. Jewish Congressmen
Jack H ,   Springfield, VA USA   (11.09.06)
FYI: John Hall of New York, the former singer from the rock group Orleans, is also Jewish. I am not sure if you included him in your tally or not.
22. Nuts! Democrats are anti Israel
JP ,   Winnipeg   (11.09.06)
This will turn bad for Israel. Hamas must be happy with the election results. Like suicide voting dem
23. #15
Rustum ,   London, UK   (11.09.06)
Try reading carefully. I did not make any generalisation - but I said that Dana's use of the word "shiksa" is an abomination. Why can you simply not agree taht the stupid person who used teh word is a bigot? Leave your monkeys and pigs out of it and do try and stick to the issue. She called the wife of an elected representative a "shiksa". Offensive? Yes Racist? Yes, Bigotted? Yes Idiotic? Yes, moronic? yes. You might note that Moslems are nowhere in this discussion so your attempt to drag in some lunatic imams is a waste of everyone's time. If you want to hear a decent imam preach, I suggest the nice mosque in Southern Tel-Aviv which your municipality has recently restored after 50 years of neglect, as a small hint of the original historic presence of Palestinians in your part of the world, most probably before your ancestors arrived and threw all teh "shiksas" and "sheygetsim" out.
24. Jews Take Root on Capitol Hill
chaim ben aharon ,   ny nt usa   (11.09.06)
Your comments prove that it is the Islamic world that needs cleansing. A dejihadification of it is in order.
25. #4 and use of words
Kevin ,   Tennessee, USA   (11.09.06)
Why? She is a shiksa, which is to say a gentile woman. At least object to the post truthfully, that is Sanders is a Socialist and you obviously share his ideology, not on bogus "hurt feelings" because of a perceived cultural sleight.
26. Big Deal
malcolm   (11.09.06)
The anti/Israel radical left has slowly co-opted the Democrat Party.
27. Ellison is a menace
Joe ,   Minneapolis, MN   (11.09.06)
We'll need all the Jews in Congress we can get - to counteract Nation of Islam/CAIR buddy Keith Ellison getting elected. Don't belive the hype - this guy has some seriously shady connections and we all need to keep an eye on him. His buddies at CAIR are terror supporters who get their money from radicals in Saudi Arabia, and they've funneled major money into Ellison's campaign.
28. shiksa
chai ,   pa   (11.09.06)
whether or not #2 used a pejorative term is tangentail. The fact that sanders married out is proof of his lack of Jewish commitment. #14 Jews are a nation and likely the oldest in the world. If we are not who was David king of - naked Italians?
29. reply to Tayfun
David Goldman ,   Va Beach Va   (11.09.06)
The nice litle piece written by Tayfun of Turkey is another example of ignorance in this world. First off Tayfun let me educate you that Israelis and Jews are not the same thing. Judaism is a religion not a race the same as Islam and Christianity are not races. Using your stupidity does that mean that an American politician who's ancestors are from England will go to the US Congress to look out for England. Your comments prove that there is still much anti-semitism in the Muslim world and how the Muslims instead of looking at themselves as the reason for their problems and instablitiy continue the old and tired "blame the jews".
30. Moderate Muslim <> Ellison
MikeTky ,   Tokyo Japan   (11.09.06)
From: http://www.corruptionchronicles.com/2006/11/congress_gets_muslim.html The first Muslim elected to the United States Congress is a Democrat from Minneapolis with ties to an Islamic group that supports terrorism and a radical cult whose leader says God will destroy the entire white race and establish a paradise nation ruled by blacks. Minnesota’s new Representative in the House, Keith Ellison, was endorsed and partly financed by the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a massive U.S.-based organization that avidly defends Osama bin Laden and other militant Islamic terrorists and considers U.S. action against terrorists anti-Islamic. In fact, the group demanded the removal of a Los Angeles billboard describing bin Laden as “the sworn enemy” because it was “offensive to Muslims.” Ellison, who converted to Islam as a 19-year-old college student, also has strong ties to the Nation of Islam, the black cult led by renowned anti-Christian and anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan. The group’s doctrine states that black people created white people in a genetic experiment 6,000 years ago and that “Judgment Day” means that the Gods will destroy the entire white race (devils) and establish a paradise nation ruled forever by blacks. As if this weren’t enough to question the choice of Minnesota voters, as a state legislator Ellison supported and defended a convicted cop-killer and leader of a violent gang. Ellison used thug-like language to attack law enforcement officials as racists saying “we don’t get no justice, you don’t get no peace.” Ellison also supports and demands freedom for another convicted cop-killer named Assata Shakur, who lives in Cuba and remains on the FBI’s most wanted list. Ellison is not Moderate!!!
