Beth, there is nothing extreme about having a fourth annual Jersusalem Pride March. The very fact that vigilante "justice" was attempted by the Haredim and rightist wackos does not make the gay marchers "extremists."

I am not anti-gay, But I believe that parading around a certain sexual lifestyle, gay or straight, is disrespectful and does little to promote your cause. A majority of Jerusalem's residents opposed the march. I am of the belief that the will of the majority needs to be the overriding factor in determining and molding public policy. The parade's organizers seemed to have gone out of their way to offend people by thumbing their nose at the public who do not wish to see a celebration of sexuality in their neighborhoods - for that reason they are extremists indeed.

I do not think you are anti-gay, Beth. I just think you haven't thought this through. I am very deferential to the majority on most issues, and I agree that the majority is not taken very seriously in Israel. I am deeply opposed to over-active courts as well. But not everything is subject to majority vote. The founding fathers of the US explained in detail why the majority as a bloc cannot be given free rein. That is why a Bill of Rights was put in place immediately when the Constitution was adopted, and that is why the US adopted such a complicated political structure. I urge you to get a copy (online, if you'd like) of _The Federalist_ for some of the original debate over the structure of the US government. The issue here isn't a minority determining "public policy," anyway. It is, rather, whether a minority can protest what this public policy entails. That is a very, very important distinction. As for "parading around a certain sexual lifestyle, gay or straight," we both know that the situation is the not the same for gays and straights, which is why there are not "straight pride" marches per se. I would argue, though, that few things are flaunted so much as heterosexuality. E.g. photos of wife and kids on one's desk at work, wedding rings, etc. For gay people, however, there is something more basic than legal equal rights (which are not enjoyed by Israeli gays). If you're black, you cannot hide it. "Visibility" is guaranteed. If you're gay, you often can hide it, and even you're "obvious," people can "politely" pretend not to notice. A gay march is the opposite of the closet, it makes what can be hidden and turns it into something that is not hidden, if only for a few hours. Those who hide cannot fight for legal rights effectively, and that is why enforcing the closet is a basic strategy for preventing equal legal rights. If you wonder WHY this march is such a big problem for many, it is because they correctly understand that keeping gays "invisible" is 3/4 of the battle. I do not consider it "extreme" for Israeli gays to insist that they will not agree to hide. I will grant, though, that gay activists DO tend to be ideological leftists because only such people are usually willing to take on such a role. I am interested in your response.
