There is absolutely NO historic precedence for such gender separation. It didn't exist in Temple times, and it didn't exist in Talmudic times; heck, it didn't exist in the shtetls of Eastern Europe either. Indeed, I know of NO instance of such separation in any Diaspora community. Places like Kiryas Joel in the US are moving in that direction though (they don't want their women driving either). There is a distinction in Jewish law between the private domain and the public domain. The sidewalks and storefronts belong to the public domain and are governed by established practice, as are public buses. If they don't like it, they can build their own gated communities in which their reactionary ideas can hold sway. The backlash is coming. Neither the modern orthodox - who also oppose this nonsense - nor the secular know yet how to deal with this. But the counter-reaction, when it comes, won't be pretty.
