1. Nuclear aspirations in the Middle East
sujan singh ,   Delhi-India   (12.11.06)
Nuclear Proliferation in the Middle East Countries (Cooperation of the Arab States) would not be conducive for the world peace in the near future. The world has already suffered from two World Wars and nucear energy cannot be proliferated in the countries which do not have political stability and are dependent only on outside support. Moreover their economiies are also shaky as they are thriving only one oil source .
2. Balance of Power
Gurmit Singh ,   India   (12.11.06)
This will bring in a good balance of power in the middle-east. No nation can threat anyone with nukes then.
3. Something new to keep us awake at night
Maria T ,   Canada   (12.11.06)
During the Cold War we had only two superpowers to worry about and although there were a few close calls, we managed to talk and make it to 1990, when we were supposed to be on the side of peace, cooperation, capitalism, etc., etc. Now our children will have to worry about dozens of countries engaging in their usual "rational" arguments, while we hope and pray that they don't decide to push the button. Nuclear power should have been limited to those who already had it and no more. It's not about countries' rights to nuclear power, it's the whole world's right to be safe. Even my beloved Canada is guilty of spreading the use of CANDU reactors in several countries, for "peaceful purposes", of course. We should have known better. Too late now.

no nation in the middle east has threatened any other nation except iran and the arab nations....all threatened israel's existance. so, a nuclear bomb given to any of these unstable rulers can only spell disaster. israel has NEVER threatened anyone with its nuclear power even though there were many many occasions it could have used them for survival purposes. and it never threatened any of the arab countries to wipe them off the map either. think about it,
5. Nukes in the Middle East
robin ,   israel   (12.11.06)
Sheer stupidity if you ask me. Thses governments that want to obtain Nuclear energy for peaceful purposes are once step away from political unrest(Saudia Arabia for example) and have their own internal problems with terrorism, can you imagine what would happen if these countries had nukes and then the radical islamists took control of them? Let these countries first help their people overcome financial hardships, which will stabilize the countries then talk about nukes. Happy citizens = less radicals in the country!
6. 2# who said they weren't planning on using them
Steven Wilson ,   Anchorage, Alaska   (12.11.06)
on the jews? The false assumption that mutually assured destruction is going to work with terrorists is dead wrong. If the Arabs or Persians get the bomb... you can gaurantee one terrorist group will use it on the Jews or in the United States. Rationality will not prevail. The Twin Towers showed us that. And if Israel has anything to do with a response....many Arab states will no longer exist if the Jews are attacked.
7. Stop these lunatics!
Concerned ,   USA   (12.11.06)
These lunatics must be stopped!! Imagine if Iran had nukes before the revolution, and the US was OK with it because they're a friend... What if we let these crazy Arab countries, which are our friends now, get the nukes, but then they get overthrown and replaced by some radical idiots?! They would not even hesitate to use them. The US & the whole world should stund up to these "friends".
8. #6.Israel -bomb pre1967 Imply Threat>ME countries
Moses ,   Canada   (12.11.06)
Israel had bomb pre-1967. US- Nat.Archives, declassified org.docs. Israel threatened bomb Lebanon, back to 1st century! Threatened also Iran:"We will not allow you nukes ,will bomb your facilities with or without US help! Publicized Israel has plans (done dry runs) to attack Iran's suspected nuke facilitiess. Iran said:: We will RETALIATE, but will NOT attack any country and have NEVER attacked any country as Israel has attacked Iraq facility. Not stable country, but it has all nuke army, fourth largest in WORLD! Israel not stable government,Dep.PM Lieberman is a prime EXAMPLE. Even Israelis say he is Bigot,Racist!

I am as horrified by the prospect of a Middle East Arms Race as you are. More so, as I live here. But perhaps this was needed to get the world to finally pay serious attention to what's going on in Iran.

I grew up in the U.S. during the period of air raid drills in school (what to do if you see "a big flash" too -- Duck and Cover, anyone?) and I wouldn't wish that fear on anyone. But, put yourself in the position of the Gulf States. They see that the world is knuckling under to the raving Shiite Ahmadinejad. No wonder they're quaking in their Sunni boots. So, *of course*, they're interested in creating a balance of power. Anyway, how do you think that we would all feel more safe with (heaven forbid!) Ahmadinejad's finger on the nuclear button and NO balance of power in the gulf region?
11. To Moses in Canada, #8
Joan ,   Haifa   (12.11.06)
Let me see if I understand: Ahmadinejad says repeatedly that he wants to "wipe Israel off the map," but Iran once said they wouldn't attack and *that's* what you choose to believe. Hmm....
12. equal opportunity 2 all
1.5 billion Muslims   (12.11.06)
if one country has Nukes, every other country has right to get Nukes ; friend or foe . well come to the new Middle east. Reality Check , world

Maria T ,   BC Canada   (12.12.06)
One of the main errors that the West keeps making is to assume that Muslims think like us. Need I remind you of Bush's belief that Iraq, once free from dictatorship, would embrace democracy? Russians and Americans managed to understand each other a little and neither wanted to be nuked all the way to paradise. Deterrence worked. Muslims don't think like the West. That's why we'll have to learn a whole new way of dealing with their demands and their terrorists and eventually their nukes. Personally, just by watching the way Europe is going, I feel very pesimistic.
