61. They should COPY the JEWISH BUSES IN MONSEY NY
YB   (01.24.07)
THE LADIES SIT ON ONE SIDE OF THE BUS AND MAN ON THE OTHER AND THEY HAVE A PARTITION IN BETWEEN. PROBLEM SOLVED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
62. I take those buses twice a day , every day
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (01.24.07)
And I don't like it a little bit either. Some people get nausea and sickness if they sit at the back of the bus, on top of this AND, if it so importantant to keep people's genders separated, put the men at the back, they are the ones who made up this ruling so far vegamarnu
63. naomi regan haredi?
uncle moishey ,   jerusalem, israel   (01.24.07)
64. To #59 cab drivers from Minnesota?
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (01.24.07)
Since most of those are Muslims, and though Minnesota would probably be glad to see them go, in Israel, that ought to really confuse the issue. (Have you pulled that tongue out of your cheek, yet?)
65. Naomi, stick to writing your bodice rippers!
Aviva ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.24.07)
Stick to your bosom-heaving, bodice-ripping romance novels and let a RELIGIOUS WOMAN speak in the name of "oppressed haredi womanhood."
66. A Thank you to these brave Women.
Joan Tumpson ,   Miami, Florida   (01.25.07)
I think the practice of segregating women and forcing them to the back of the bus is VILE, as is much of what seems to be required by Orthodox Jews. Silly nonsence from the 14th century schtetel. Rosa Parks stood up for equality. My sisters should be commended for doing so now. Is there much difference between these practices and those observed by the Taliban? Shame.
67. #66 "brave" women
Aviva ,   Jerusalem, Israel   (01.25.07)
How "brave" is it to get into a shouting match THREE YEARS AGO? (Apparently the woman who incited a slapping fight on the bus a few months ago was too unstable to continue to action and they had to go to backup plan) Just a week ago YNet was ready to lynch a religious woman who shouted at her Arab neighbor. But yell at a Jewish man on a bus and you get a medal.
68. What I learned from travels in Iran
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (01.25.07)
Back in '76 I was on an excursion bus from Shiraz back to Teheran. At one stop between the cities we picked up an elderly woman, dressed head to toe in a black chador. The only open seat ... was next to me. In her mind, it was "improper" to sit next to a young unrelated man, and an obvious foreigner to boot! But this was a public convenience, with a mixed bag of passengers, and open seating was the rule. Returning to Israel, there were many haredi passengers on Jerusalem buses, but as a public convenience, open seating was the rule. Fast forward a few decades to today's Israel. The fundamentalists are growing in numbers, some are increasingly assertive, and don't care who they offend with their over the top, made up righteousness. Unless they're slapped back, their demands will only increase. Those who oppose this nonsense need to re-establish the rules of public behavior. Here's one suggestion: Have a dozen married couples take scattered seats together at the start of a bus run. If any fundamentalists choose to challenge those mixing, a simple "F*** off, this is my wife" should suffice. Do the same with some burly soldiers and their girlfriends. After a few such experiences, he'll get the message. I write this as a traditional Jew who is fed up with the direction the ultras are taking us.
69. I take these buses twice a day - Kyle
gabriela ben ari ,   jerusalem   (01.25.07)
Kyle as usual u r the star of talkbckers, won the award :-) If men need to separate themselves so desperately let them go to the back of the bus, just a little corner reserved At some hours buses are full of women at some times full of men, so no point to place boundaries And to some tbrs (sagi ect) cool down a bit, it's not "humilating , painful , mentally anguishing or antidemocratic" to ride these buses either, come on! just plain stupid, period PS: I've posted a tb some hours, cant see it
70. ragen
Ronit ,   Neve Tzion, Israel   (01.25.07)
Btw, She has a car. She used the bus this time just to pick a fight.
71. if the men can't be near women, let them walk!
rpc ,   modiin, israel   (01.25.07)
what a ridiculous world these men are living in. If the mere presence of a woman sitting near them so disrupts their life that they stop thinking about god and start thinking about sex, then they should get out and start walking. why is it the woman's responsibility to segregate herself because he's weak? sick, sick, sick.
72. Israeli Taliban
Leah Miklowitz ,   Tallahassee, FL, USA   (02.12.07)
The burden falls on militant Heredi men. They need to sit in the back themselves or arrange separate buses, and not harass women on public buses to move. And maybe they need to take a cold shower before they get on the bus. This is not combatting new secular trends in Israel. Women and men have ridden buses together since before statehood. That this Heredi movement also calls for women to limit their education also shows these men's real motive: they just want to control women. G-d save us from extreme fundamentalists, regardless of religion.
73. Exactly like in Islamic countries
Hiram ,   Paris   (01.15.08)
Same causes always produce same effects.....therefore if it works in an Islamic nation where women have been traditionally suppressed though extremes of religion ( as required by God ) the same should work in Israel ....but it does not . May be some haredi women have enough walking 3 feet behind their bearded male, enough spending their life producing children for the glory of God, and may be indeed, some of them have enough being treated like second class citizens.
74. Bus
Barbara Godding ,   Bristol RI   (09.30.08)
thank god I live in America if they did that in the US they probably be beaten up we womwn here sith where we damn please give me a break
75. The facts in the article are not exact
Vladimir ,   Jerusalem   (08.19.09)
Noami Ragen is not charedi. I know it for sure. And the neighbourhood she lives in - Ramot Bet - is connected with the center of Jerusalem by several bus lines, only one of which # 40 is intended for sex separation. Being an experienced author and manipulator she made a provocation in order to gain cheap popularity, at the expense of charedim, of cause. Shame!
76. Building freeze linked to PA violence freeze
Charles Oren ,   Givatayim Israel   (12.03.09)
For the building freeze to be a genuine part of the peace process it must be linked to a similar gesture by the PA, such as a freeze on incitement and violence. The gesture should also state what happens to the freeze at the end of the 10-month period and what happens if either side violates it. Without such a linkage, the freeze is not a part of a process with our neighbours but rather a part of the internal Israeli struggle. It is the Defence Minister who implements the freeze. He is well known for his opposition to religious right wing settlers and for his problems with his party. For these 2 reasons many non-religious, apolitical Israeli citizens can not complete building their homes, despite the fact that they have all the needed permits. They will have no home but will have to continue to pay the mortgage.
