if you desire an explanation to an act so horenduous, so insane and so inhumane, all you have to do is read the kuran. however, before reading the kuran itself, do me a great favor and pick up a book called WHY I AM NOT A MUSLIM by IBN WARRAQ. this particular book, a masterpiece of research, fact, and reason will shed all the light needed on why this particular individual did what he did and why this act is so encouraged in the muslim world and the kuran. the book's title says enough and it says it all. another excellent text i recommend is THE TROUBLE WITH ISLAM TODAY by irshad manji. a muslim calling for an immediate reform in islamic dogma, religion and laws. another excellent source would be THE GREAT THEFT by KHALED ABUEL FADL. all three authors are experts and leading authorities on islam and its law and ways of practice. i teach the subject at an ivy league university and have done extensive laborious research into the phenomena you cannot understand. however, there is a very simple explanation. all you have to do is read these books. my students tell me they are indeed a huge eye opener for those trying to understand what is going on not only in the middle east, arab/israeli conflict, but also in the mindset of the palestinian extremist and regular person these days. please read!

A good PR campaign in the West is way overdue. The only ones the media gives voice to when giving the Israeli point of view, is the Isreaeli Left. Always. To be "evenhanded" after telling all the details of Palestinian suffering, the Western media have features regarding the Holocaust or other Jewish issues, but never anything about the killings of Jews by Arabs or Arab voices filled with threats and hatred.
