Means they can now get back to the old business of murdering Jews and begging for money How about the business of murdering innocent palestinians while they sleep ? Why is it that Hamas is forced to recognize Israel ? Why is Israel not forced to recognize Palestine ? At least to the territories ? Is Palestine not Gaza and the West Bank (and East Jerusalem) ? Why can't they govern with the government that they chose ? It was a democratic election. Was it not ? Isreal calls that Peace ? What about the Violations on the Green Line ? The Wall ? The illegal settlements in the West Bank. That check points ? Why must an entire nation suffer these attrocities? What had the Palestinians done to the Jews prior to 1948 ? What had that population done to be so displaced or Ethnically cleansed? Jimmy Carter nailed it when he called his book "Peace not Apartheid" These sins are commited on the Palis daily . why is that not ever questioned ? Could these be causes of frusteration, that lead to terrorism ?

Israel isn't forced to recognize Palestine because it does not yet exist. It was never a sovereign nation and Arabs from the mandate began referring to themselves as Palestinians only post-48. Prior to that it was the Jews who referred to themselves as Palestinian Jews (Jewish paper, the Palestinian post, for example). Many of the Arab refugees were NOT born in the mandate, because in order to be considered an Arab refugee from 1948, you only had to have lived here from 1946 (aka many Arabs not indigenous). More importantly, Gaza and West Bank cannot automatically be considered Palestine, since prior to 1967 Gaza belonged to Egypt and WB to Jordan, and there were NO calls for an autonomous Palestinian state. Palestine may come into being, but this will be a future nation. BTW, almost all political parties in Israel, as well as the majority of the population, recognize (and even encourage) the right for Palestinians to create a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza. For example, such a state was offered to them in 2000 (with over 95% of their land demands), which Arafat rejected, with NO counteroffer. There is no such reciprocity for recognition of an Israeli state by many Palestinians. Hamas isn't forced to recognize Israel, however it is required to do so if it wants Israel to honor resolutions such as UNSCR 242 since those resolutions (which call for Israel to cede lands) also call for SECURE and RECOGNIZED borders – in order to have those, a precondition is that Hamas recognize Israel and renounce terror. That’s just basic logic. Clearly you have not actually read Carter's book, or you would know that (on pg 256) he states that what's happening in Israel is NOT apartheid. Likewise, when talking about semantics, Arabs were not ethnically cleansed from Israel. There are still many Arabs living in Israel (some, as in Haifa, were even encouraged to stay.) In contrast, there are NO Jews in Gaza anymore. Most of the 1948 'cleansing' you speak of was actually caused by Arab leaders encouraging Arabs to leave and come back once the Jews had been annihilated - 60% of Arabs who fled in 1948 never saw an Israeli soldier. Many Palestinians civilians have been killed, but 'murder' is about intent. Most of the civilian casualties caused by the IDF are collateral damage (a LACK of deliberate intent). Finally, contrary to your claim, Israeli treatment of Palestinians is questioned often. In fact, it is questioned by UN committees so much that Kofi Annan himself – certainly no fan of Israel – berated the human rights committee for its disproportional examination of Israel, noting that it had consistently investigated treatment of Palestinians, while ignoring FAR worse crises such as the ones in Sudan and Somalia. Also, as a general trend, there are more articles on alleged Palestinian human rights abuses in the papers than on all human rights abuses in Africa COMBINED.

Even though the explanation given to you was good, here's what really counts right now: Ask Hamas what they thought of September 11th. As a New Yorker, you would probably not like the answer.

It is not the end of the world for Haniyeh yet. He can save the world, be like Al Gore ! The world would love to see him leading the Muslim countries to pursue with the global warming, etc, etc programs. Afterall, it is not bad idea. For the start, he can learn it from the environmentalists or catch the movie .. An Inconvenient Truth !!

Sadly, that's what unites them. All three Palestinian leaders featured in the above photo received death threats during the recent fighting. This kind of sentiment will not be set aside for long. If the Palestinian leadership demonstrated stability, recognized Israel and stopped terror, they might have a shot at building a future. Don't hold your breath.
