1. The Arabs are getting smarter, finally.
Persian CAT   (02.22.07)
They KNOW that Israel WILL scuttle ANY peace initiative. So the Arab "officials" can claim they extended a hand to Israel but were rebuffed. This is really cheap politics which does not contribute to the welfare of neither the Palestinians nor Isrealis.
2. Talk is cheap!!!
DR ,   Florida, USA   (02.22.07)
Lets see concrete steps towards relations. Start by having free and unbiased media, free and unbiased education and freedomof speechin your countries. Follow that with condemnation of countries which want to destroy Israel and condemnation of terror against Israel. Maybe after these things are done, Israelis will believe in this idea.
3. Al Takeyya
Neal ,   NJ,USA   (02.22.07)
The Arabic word, "Takeyya", means "to prevent," or guard against. The principle of Al Takeyya conveys the understanding that Muslims are permitted to lie as a preventive measure against anticipated harm to one's self or fellow Muslims. This principle gives Muslims the liberty to lie under circumstances that they perceive as life threatening. They can even deny the faith, if they do not mean it in their hearts. Al-Takeyya is based on the following Quranic verse: "Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah: except by way of precaution (prevention), that ye may Guard yourselves from them (prevent them from harming you.) But Allah cautions you (To remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah." Surah 3: 28

6. In front of the cameras
Ryan ,   Calgary, Canada   (02.22.07)
Behind the scene, hamas's military wing declares and end to the ceasefire and promises Israeli deaths. But hamas is not accountable. I guess the US administration is not accountable for deaths in Iraq or Afghan as they are only the military wing. Trust is earned, through actions, not words.
7. Is that Olmert & Rice & Abbas in the center of the photo?

DR ,   Florida, USA   (02.22.07)
What advantages does Israel get by not wanting peace??? You keep spewing out this propoganda and BS over and over, but you have no basis for it. I guess once you start believing your own lies, there is no turning back.
10. #1- Isn't it time for you to shut up and water your camel?

Hmmm, where is Mr. Solanna?
12. To Neal #3
Concerned Israeli   (02.22.07)
The understanding of takiyya as you are describing it developed in medieval Persia within the Shi'a as a defense mechanism that would allow Shi'is to lie to Sunnis about their beliefs in order to stay alive (instead of being killed for being heretics). Since all the Arabs that took part in this summit are Sunnis who have no tradition of takiyya, your assertion is wrong. These Arab leaders just lie because they're politicians.
13. ISNT IT THE SAUDIS WHO HAVE TEXTBOOKS CALLING

CHRISTIANS AND JEWS "PIGS" WHY NOW ???
14. What a pathetic bunch!
Jellybean ,   Chicago   (02.22.07)

Kyle ,   Southpark, CO, USA   (02.22.07)
Same shit, different day. This is based on the Saudi terms of surrender (oop, "peace initiative") which includes, for starters, a complete retreat to the pre-1967 lines (including Jerusalem and the WESTERN WALL), the expulsion of 300,000 Jews, and a "right of return" for 4 million hostiles into what is left of Israel. All this for some vague intangibles of "advance toward recognition." It's complete bullshit.
16. Peace initiative?
Green Baron ,   Bethesda, MD, USA   (02.23.07)
The Green Baron craves forgiveness for his incredulity at this latest news, given the currents of history since 1948--nay, since 1920. If, however, there be a grain of truth to this Agence France-Presse account, it would not be ascribable, in The Green Baron's view, to any love Arabs may lose for Israel. Perhaps they have come to consider Iran a far more grave menace to them than Israel ever could be.
17. very good news but;
(02.23.07)
They should make also a statement or rather a commitment to fight the rising anti semitism feeling among arabs. But this is for sure a good step ( but let s not forget that it is a tactical step due to the Iranian threat...). Israel is lucky and may take great advantage of the iranian threat ( unfortunately we are ruled by a very incompetent leader). But we should be careful (Egypt sign a peace treaty, but hasnt fully normalized). We dont want this again.
18. Hope it´s trueª!
TOMAS ,   BSAS,ARGENTINA   (02.23.07)
Hope It´s True.... Long Live Israel
19. I guess they watch 24 in the Middle East - Copycats!
Observer ,   USA   (02.23.07)
Let's hope President Palmer and Al-Fassad don't get killed delivering the address next Monday. However, I must say this is laughable to anyone with intelligence about ME politics. It's a shame you can't see the back rows of politicians or their hands. I think even the sheik in the lower right has his fingers crossed. Talk is meaningless with those who don't do anything. Same bunch that promised millions in aid to the palestinians but never delivered to their "brothers in arms." Simply as useless as their condemnation of Israel.
20. Full normalization unrelated to Israel Land
B ,   Us   (02.23.07)
PEACE FOR PEACE. Trade, TOLERANCE, stoping hate speeches, stopping incitement. Even better destroying 1949 Arab League agreement preventing the Pal Arabs from becoming citizens of any Arab country. Integration, absorbtion, denial of LESSER JIHAD. Respect Acceptance of Jewish Nation and Jewish People. Right of Return to Arabia. If Arab Nations do, really do these things, will find Israel GREAT FRIEND and NEIGHBOR.
21. First things first
(02.23.07)
Get them a dictionary so they can find out what "peace" means
22. Now the arabs should stop firing rockets on Israel.
Robert Renders ,   belgium   (02.23.07)
Daily rockets from Gaza on Israeli cities and hundred attampts a week from Lebanon and Palestine to send suicide attackers will not help, wathever the statements.
23. A Distraction
Brod ,   USA   (02.23.07)
This is a distraction that is well planned to deceive Israel, America and the West into unpreparedness for an impending Iranian nuke. What a clever idea! I hope Israel will not fall for this crap. Those who think that there is a divide between Sunnis and Shiites are fooling themselves. They fact is both groups are Islamists. Both have been attacking Americans in Iraq and throughout the Middle East. Both have been attacking Israel the past 6 decades. And since the 7th century both groups have been attacking Jews and Christians. Both groups are dedicated in Jihadism of imposing Islamic authority over the whole world. Never be fooled by the dark forces. They are utilizing their strategy of deception as one of their tools in subduing their enemies--Jews and Christians.
24. Arab league just scared of Iran

28. Politics at its best
Media Critic ,   USA   (02.23.07)
Arabs uniting against a bigger enemy than Israel, this is the only way to isolate Iran. US, the Arabs and Israel against the real threat for world peace and world economical prosperity.
29. #9:To Mr. DR from the great state of Florida
papa jay   (02.23.07)
Ah, but israel has every interest not to make Peace, becuase making peace means giving up it's "promised" lands to the arabs. "The disengagement plan is the preservative of the sequence principle. It is the bottle of formaldehyde within which you place the president's formula so that it will be preserved for a very lengthy period. The disengagement is actually formaldehyde. It supplies the amount of formaldehyde that's necessary so that there will not be a political process with the Palestinians." Dov Weisglass. "The significance of what we did is the freezing of the political process." (Alon Ron)
30. Israel and Peace = Oxymoron
papa jay   (02.23.07)
Weisglass's words have to produce nausea and extreme discomfort in dovish supporters of the disengagement plan, or even in anyone who is concerned that the Isaeli government not portray us as monsters of some sort. In a preview article, Ha'aretz quotes him as saying: "The significance of the disengagement plan is the freezing of the peace process..." "And when you freeze that process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, and you prevent a discussion on the refugees, the borders and Jerusalem. Effectively, this whole package called the Palestinian state, with all that it entails, has been removed indefinitely from our agenda. And all this with authority and permission. All with a presidential blessing and the ratification of both houses of Congress." "The disengagement is actually formaldehyde... It supplies the amount of formaldehyde that is necessary so there will not be a political process with the Palestinians."
