Was it a slip or did this really pass the editorial stages? I hope to read many more such articles in the future
6. how sad the view is from Israel...
A Reader ,   CA   (03.19.07)
I couldn’t help but notice how sad the view is from Israel... Down to the last part of this series the author has trouble shedding the Israeli pre-conceived Chiloni/Datti generalizations that we here in America for the most part don’t have. I would imagine that after getting to know the local Chabad couple in Japan she would have realized that Chabad neither fits those categories nor uses them. Maybe it’s time that the author, along with who ever else see other Jews through those lenses, stop judging and generalizing about other and take a long hard look at themselves...
7. #5 Why?
Disappointed ,   T A   (03.19.07)
What did you learn/read that you didn't already know?
8. The first Zionist were socialists
David Rutstein ,   Jerusalem   (03.19.07)
So their decendants are the acedemia here. When these decendants of communists and socialists write anti-Jewish stuff, don't be surprised.
9. #6 A valid point
Disappointed ,   TA   (03.19.07)
but please don't generalize. Not all the religious community, to which I am proud to belong, is as you describe. Just as there are loads of narrow minded, among the religious of NY. Not sad at all really, but vibrant, challenging and changing all the time, as that's what Israel IS. Most of all, the ONLY place for us, in good situations but also the tough ones. The latter is when the 'tough' get going usually...to the so called greener pastures of....and it's good for them and for us, that they do this.
10. #7 Why!
Shalom   (03.19.07)
I thanked YNet for printing something that may make secular readers think that it is possible positive experience while celebrating Shabbat in a traditional manner, as opposed to YNet's normal image of anything hinting at "religious" as being archaic, boring, and fanatical
11. OOps, lost me right there
Steve G ,   Kew Gardens,NYC   (03.20.07)
'(Oops! I immediately recall that it’s forbidden for women to sing in mixed company and switch to pointing out the familiar songs in the songbook instead.)' Sorry, that's the point where I'd walk out. How can you forbid another person to sing because she is a woman?
12. #11-walk out is what u probably do every time
oritush   (03.20.07)
u dont know something or dont understand something--which makes u a narrow minded shmuk who wants to "appear" liberal and all permissive. Jewdaism has many rules and gide-lines--if u dont know them(which u obviously do not) instead of asking about the logic behind it and what it means-u would walk out. Keep on walking...like we would care
13. I know exactly what I am talking about
Steve G ,   Kew Gardens, NY, USA   (03.20.07)
I am quite aware of of all the traditional guidelines in Judaism. And not allowing women to sing at a Shabbat table is the type of stupidity that weakens the Jewish family, not strengthen it.
