African Elephants do not domesticate like their south Asian counterparts. They are very hard to handle and usually display anti social behavior when they get stressed. In Africa they once had thousands of bands of Elephants roaming wild and there were Rogue males that would take to killing all other animals and their own kind. They were usually the largest males, very formidable creatures that somehow had a brain malfunction. We might be witnessing the same behavior here and the next attack could possibly be a human or worse many humans. African elephants should be given a wide berth.

I am not an expert on animal behavior; but what little I guess... It all began as a child of 7 or 8, when for the first time (and so far the last) I herd an elephant trumpet from a few feet from me. The elephant was "Asiatic species" captive with a band of "Sadhus" in India. The sound was loud and frightening. But those Mahouts got the animal under control and tied all 4 legs kept him tied for several days. I still remember (I am 60 now) the animal was hugh and a mail; I saw; his genital was out and almost touching ground, from sides of his forehead some kind of fluid was oozing out. And we children were not allowed to go near him (otherwise we were touching and patting him). Latter as a hobby; I got studying animals; and guessed that the elephant may have smelled a female on heat from several KM away. Is there any other group of elephants in Ramatgan zoological garden? Or is there any other zoo near by (within 30 to 40 KM) having female elephants? Yossi may have smelt that female; got excited and found nearest source to release his excitement in Atari, her refusal may have led to her killing. Putting Yossi to sleep is not a solution as one of the readers suggests. Male and female elephants don’t live together in wild, they come together only temporarily. Staff should keep Yossi isolated and allowed to mate females in heat with control barriers (that can be designed and built.).

I saw the video of the incidence, apparently the male doesn't look like sexually charged, and his act must be for leadership (dominance) of the group. It is better he is isolated; since second to Atari female will try to take over the charge and Yossi will repeat his act. I wish to see complete filming from beginning to the end, where will I get it?

This is so sad. We will never know why he did it and what provoked it. Elephants are brilliant and the most dangerous captive animal.
