4. Appeasment
Bluto ,   Cincinnati, USA   (04.04.07)
Appeasement never has and never will work. First, win a decisive militatry victory over Hamas, Hizbollah, and, if necessary, Syria. Then dictate the terms of surrender and "settlement." That's how every victor in history has done it; why should Israel be different? IF NOT NOW, WHEN? When it's too late?
5. It's true that agreement is preferable
Michael Steiner   (04.04.07)
Of course it is to be preferred to jointly decide on a course of action, hopefully as part of a final-status agreement. than resort to one-sides actions. But why should these be viewed as "concessions"? A concession is something one renounces. which is of benefit or value to one. The occupied territories are of absolutely no value to us; they're a stone around our necks and we should be jumping at every opportunity to get rid of them! The author is correct though: reconciliation and cooperation should be our ultimate goals...
6. one prince could teach you all a great deal
threat hunter ,   eisham, israel   (04.04.07)
the right and left wings are both far off from the realistic view and the strategy to victory. give up the territories asap, declare a state of palestine, offer full normalized state-to-state relations with israel, give them a chance to prove their intentions, and if they so much as throw one stone at israel after they have a state, then israel will be justified in getting rid of the palestine fantasy forever. for those of you who haven't read the prince by machiavelli, i highly recommend it. shalom to all :)
7. #5 and #6...they don't want peace with Israel!
DR ,   Florida, USA   (04.04.07)
They want Jerusalem as thier capital, they want the right of return, and they want Israel to disappear. How do you make compromise and peace with this???
8. #6 Threat Hunter - There's a problem
Gerry ,   Florida   (04.04.07)
The most patriotic Israelis are those in the territories and the ones that support them. If you uproot them, you destroy Israel's heart.
9. Right from the start we needed a different government
Allen ,   USA   (04.04.07)
The author tells it appropriately: "Unilateral SUBMISSION." Mr. Olmert wonders why he is so very unpopular. Is there any wonder?
10. Terror = Land Policy
C-Low ,   US   (04.04.07)
If it was up to me I would have the Terror=Land policy. Every time a missile, suicide bomber, was either successful or attempted failure I would forcibly take more territory. Openly proclaim the rules like 1missile equals X # of acres 1 dead civilian + X ect.. then act on it. This process would do a couple things 1) It would wake up the Palestinians that it was time to either accept and reconcile or risk absolute defeat permanently. 2) It would help Israel solidify their border into something that can be reasonably controlled defended. 3) At the end of the day the Palestinians would either reconcile or be pushed into an ever shrinking territory or if they refuse to wake up out of Israel. The whole reason the Palestinians refuse to reconcile now is not this or that minor grievance, very simply they believe they have hit bottom and Israel lacks the will to go any further. Once on the bottom their is no risk because you can only go up so why should you compromise on anything, hell why not accept nothing less than absolute victory at some point your enemy will have to relent since he has nowhere to go but down. When they realize Israel has the will to push them into the sea, their Muslim brethren cannot stop Israel and they very may lose everything their attitude will change and compromise can be possible. Although one trap to avoid would be once the process was stopped it should be irreversible meaning if they lose city X or X part of old Jerusalem they should not be allowed later to make a compromise regaining that territory or you can risk a pattern of fight, lose, compromise, gain back, fight, lose, compromise, gain back ect..... The world is a dirty place it is not nice, sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. If the enemy doesn’t care for his own people you cannot risk your own people so you can care.
11. #10 C-Low - Excellent idea
Carl ,   Indiana, USA   (04.05.07)
It's never been tried and it would work IF ONLY Israel determined its own defense policy. Unfortunately, it's being directed by the State Department, and Eurabia, and Peace Now and the Left (who have their own bosses in Eurabia), and the Arab coalitions, etc., etc. We all know how "powerless" is the UN and the international community to stop the genocides and the abuses of human rights everywhere else. But they always find means to stop Israel from defending itself. Why? Because Israel lets them. I'm a believer that if Israel determined its own policies and applied them independently, not only it would obtain good results but it would be respected by its enemies, something that you don't see at all these days.
12. no concessions
mark ,   san diego usa   (04.05.07)
ISRAEL has given enough it is time to stop even talking about concessions and listening to world opinion . Keep what you have do not give up 1 inch of land . It will only bring more heartache and pain.
13. the most foolish idea of israil stratigy
simsim ,   anywhere   (04.05.07)
ffor many years israil used to aske for borders which she can defined it ... how foolish is the idea // as when israil can keep all palastin till the jordan river ,so it was its border .. but when it can not defined this so its border was the wall as it was thinking this one she can kept by power .. when gaza was a problem she could not keep .she left it again .. and so on .. so the fault is in israil stratigy . it is a movable stratigy leading to israil in the sea may at that time she can deinde its border ... where is the right of israil and in the same time where istheb right of palastinians // israil is thinking till this moment that they moved to an empty place known as the promised land .. from the start there were palastinians .. i mean people with legs and hands and productive system ..
14. Does Israeli water makes its leaders stupid?
Raymond from DC ,   Washington, DC USA   (04.06.07)
Just last evening I was reading a scholarly paper on Jewish intelligence, which posed a number of theories for Jewish achievement, measured intelligence commonly above the norm, etc. Well, something must make Israeli leadership stupid. Maybe it's something in the water. I've tasted cold Banias water, and it's wonderful. So maybe it's the downstream pollution that makes the descendants of otherwise intelligent Jews foolish, feckless, and corrupt. But it seems to most affect those with the "leadership" gene - those leading the parties, the rabbinate, and the government - perhaps exacerbating the effect of the "selfishness" gene. Otherwise, how is it possible that leaders could be so obtuse as to ignore history, experience, and the facts before them? How could they be so ignorant of the agenda of their adversaries, and the effect that appeasement would have on them? How could those who pioneered in commerce and international trade not recognize that negotiations in their part of the world are at once bazaar and diplomacy? Every time they mouth "painful concessions" they announce high desire and weakness - and push the price up.
