34. #32 - It doesn't seem so (Tuesday, 14:15 IST)
Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (04.17.07)
Maybe from the Far East. Hate to disappoint. Maybe more news later in day will answer this question.
35. To all those in favor of the right to bear arms
Adi ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (04.17.07)
You are right that "the baddies" will find a way to get a gun if they really want one. But you are wrong in general becasue you live in a state of mind of a country where eneryone has guns. Let me explain to you the state of mind of a normal country, where people are NOT allowed to have guns: In Israel it is forbidden to hold a gun unless you are "the armed forces", in case you didn't know it. Now - I'm talking about some random wacko that just lost it - NOT a proffesional criminal (that of course WILL have any weapon he wants). So - this random guy - a student in this case - one day wakes up, pissed at the world and wants to do something about it. Now - in a country where everyone has weapons it's very natural that said wacko will want to take a gun and start shooting. But if he grew up in a country where no one has a gun in the ready - he will not even think about it as an option of something that you do just because you are pissed at the world. Maybe it's hard for you to see what I'm trying to say here, but please believe me - when an option is not right there in front of your eyes all the time - there is less chance you will think about it. basic psychology. So what I'm saying is - there's a reason that the US has these type of incedents and not any other place in the world. That reason is that state of mind. The land of the feel free to kill each other...
36. People need to have guns and be trained to use them.
Al   (04.17.07)
Look at the video of how poorly the police operated and how poorly the University itself operated. People cannot trust the public officials to protect them in a time of need. Yes indeed there are nut jobs out there but in general there are many many more good people than bad ones. The knee jerk reaction of the anti-arms people speaks volumes of their ignorance of what needs to be done. America has a poorly trained police force more intent on Political Correctness than efficient police work. Its time for major change in Post 911 America.
37. G-d bless Professor Librescu and all the victims.
Elan ,   Netanya, Israel   (04.17.07)
My condolences to the families and friends. This draconian act could have been avoided if, at least, one responsible student in every class could carry a gun. If not a student then professor. Something can be arranged, but banning citizens from carrying guns is absolutely crazy in these circumstances. Why make it easier for the attacker!?
38. #26 There IS gun control in Israel!
Logic ,   Israel   (04.17.07)
A regular citizen who is not in the army nor lives in a "dangerous" settlement cannot get a gun permit easily.
39. to freejay
fernwood ,   new york   (04.17.07)
We don't know yet - but it seems well-planned and a diversion staged by the first shooting - and recon conducted the previous week via bomb threats to see campus reaction. Say hi to Lisa.
40. to #35 Your lack of clarity is astounding
David ,   Tel Aviv, Israel   (04.17.07)
Firstly, in Israel, you don't need to be active in the military to carry a gun. In fact, and this is extremely relevant, the government has given to issuing teachers guns to keep in their classrooms, just in case a terrorist decides to off some Jewish kids who are peacefully learning about pacifism or some other junk. please read... ISRAEL: MORE GUNS IN SCHOOL http://www.gunowners.org/op0218.htm and Proven Solutions To ENDING School Shootings http://www.jpfo.org/school.htm and secondly, your babble about growing up in a country without guns as opposed to a country with gun rights for it's citizens is embarrassingly naive. Take what's going on in Darfur or what went down in Rwanda. If the citizens there would be or could have been armed then the massacres most assuredly would not have happened the way they did or are still going on today. Noah Webster wrote: "Tyranny is the exercise of some power over a man, which is not warranted by law, or necessary for the public safety. A people can never be deprived of their liberties, while they retain in their own hands, a power sufficient to any other power in the state." and lastly, when you are trying to make a point, you can't ask us to 'please believe you' because 'it's basic psychology' America: The Land of Peace By Force

That's why crime in Australia going up. Only criminals have guns.Keep your liberal mentality at home.
42. #35 BS!
mark ,   ca   (04.17.07)
Adi,you are wrong. There is more permits to carry guns in Israel than is any other country. The fact is that you can buy guns in USA,but you have to keep it at home for self defence. In Israel you can carry it as a citizen.I had a license to carry back in early 80's. Guns don't kill, people do.
43. #30
mark ,   ca   (04.17.07)
You wrong. there is fewer than 100 deaths PER YEAR. And mostly because of stupidity of the people who is mishandle those weapons.Don't forget that US population is over 300 million.
44. Israel should be proud of Prof. Librescu
Tracy W   (04.17.07)
Let's not forget his act of heroism and let's honor his memory today and always. While others ran, he protected the students by giving up his own life. What an example in courage. This is the most important issue to discuss today.
45. to 35
Mike ,   USA   (04.17.07)
46. #17 Australlia: home of the 'most notorious spree killer'...
Ben ,   Israel   (04.17.07)
Are you forgetting about what happend in Port Arthur, Australlia in 1996. http://www.crimelibrary.com/notorious_murders/mass/bryant/index_1.html Martin Bryant murdered 35 men, women, and children in the most notorious killing spree of all time. So it seems, you have your share of maniacs too. Truth is, we all do, every nation does. The sooner you learn there is real evil in the world on the micro and the macro levels, the better off you are to be prepared when a maniac shooter enters your space.
47. Gun-related deaths
passingthru ,   Richmond, USA   (04.17.07)
There are 418,000 smoking-related deaths in America every year, and yet, cigarettes are legal. Four million people worldwide die over smoking-related deaths. It isn't a gun problem that occured at Tech. It was a nut problem. Unfortunately, the guy cracked, and more unfortunately, he managed to get semi-automatic pistols. By the way, to whoever said that anyone with a pulse can get a gun here--you have no idea what you're talking about. There are fifty states, and fifty different laws regarding gun ownership. When I lived in NJ, it was nearly impossible to get a handgun. It's easier in Virginia. But just try to get a carry permit in NYC. You won't. Do some research before writing, folks. You look smarter when you do.
48. at # 2
Mike ,   USA   (04.17.07)
"get a gun ban" that is truly insane, what was needed at this tragedy was for the victims or their protectors the police to have firearms. By this logic you may as well ban fertilizer because people use it for bombs. trying to ban guns is like trying to ban marijuana or any illicit drug, it just doesn't work and the criminals of society still manage to work their way around it. Perhaps you ought to ban human beings next!
49. to #35 complete
Mike ,   USA   (04.17.07)
no the US is not the only place to have these types of incidents, Israel is a prime example in case you didnt know living in Tel Aviv. There are many such shooting sprees of this type that happen around the world ex: Germany, Australia, South Korea, Japan where I believe there are gun laws but the killer used a knife, Montreal (2006), Erfurt (2002) Osaka (2001)
50. VA
CS ,   NY   (04.17.07)
#18 that is patently untrue. Va does not have some of the strictest gun laws in the country, you need to look up their gun laws--no waiting period to buy, minors can own, possess, and carry weapons, when I was in hs some areas wouldn't ban them on school grounds--b/c what if people wanted to go hunting after school. I grew up in Va and if you weren't supported by the NRA forget statewide office. The shooter was Korean and a permanent legal resident, not on a student visa, which implies he was in the country for a while and intended to stay. And the idea to give people more weapons is ridiculous, that's exactly what those classrooms needed more bullets flying around. Then you might have had a shootout with students/professors and the shooter that could have killed more people. Having a gun doesn't mean you know how to use it. And in the US at least a gun bought for "self-defense" is 7x more likely to kill a family member than an intruder (at least that was the case when I did research on the subject a couple years ago).
51. Barak is whack!
Jellybean ,   Chicago   (04.17.07)
I lived in Hampton, Virginia for over 3 years..Virginia is Lax when it comes to Guns and Domestic Issues. There are two states that are the stricist in the Country Wisconsin and Illinois, all 48 states you need permits for a concealed weapons, Illinois and Wisconsin they are banned and are illiegal. On the other hand many get guns illegal anyway.
52. A TRUE HERO
AG ,   Beersheva   (04.17.07)
53. He is a great hero
carol potter ,   san antonio, tx usa   (04.17.07)
This man gave his life to protect these students. He is a hero of the greatest proportions. He is with God now and you can believe that he will be remembered here in the USA as the great and wonderful man that he was. May God bless America and Isreal, for we are always in the cross-hairs of the evil ones that would do us great harm.
54. JPS
Barak ,   Portland, Oregon   (04.17.07)
Unfortunately for you the facts just do not hold up in this case. First, it turns out that the shooter here was a South Korean National here on a student visa since last August. It can hardly be said that he was part of the US gun culture! Second, the guns he used were not automatic weapons. Certainly not an AK47 that you ramble about. The guns were most likley obtained illegally. Washington DC is not far from Virginia Tech and you can buy guns on the street illegally for $15. Third, a right to carry law may have saved lives. In Mississippi in 1997 another school shooter was stopped in a killing spree (guns again obtained illegally) when a teacher at the school broke out his 30/30 rifle and stopped the shooter. More gun laws will only make more victims.
55. #2 Naive America - Responsibility not running from problems
Meir Elazar ,   Ashkelon, Israel   (04.17.07)
A gun ban is absolutely innane and naive. Guns are readily available anywhere in the world for criminals and terrorists. In Israel during terrorist incidents it is exactly the prevalence of guns amonst responsible citizens who have risen to defend their countrymen that has saved lives as they shot terrorists to death. It is time for you to wake up to the facts and the enormity of the threat of worldwide terror before it comes back to USA to strike again. Delusional thinking of banning guns, bailing out of Afghanistan and Iraq before the job is complete will cause enormous damage to American credibility. But in the meantime we must pause and honor a great hero who gave his live to save his students. May his memory be blessed forever and may he remain in our prayers along with all of the victims of this senseless tragedy.
56. Deepest Sympathy
Sharon ,   New York, NY   (04.17.07)
My deepest sympathy to the family of Professor Librescu. I'm overcome by his courageous act. May his memory be a blessing to you forever-- from a descendant of Romanian Jews. Condolences to everybody touched by this senseless violence.

59. a hero
daniela ,   baltimore, us   (04.17.07)
my condolences to family and friends and all those he helped inspire...
60. A quick survey of major websites
Kevin G ,   Oregon, USA   (04.17.07)
doesn't show anything about this hero. However, had this hero been a Muslim, the media would be falling all over themselves to point out this fact. It would be Big News in the country. Some time ago there was a mass shooter in Utah who happened to be a Muslim from Bosnia (killed 5 in shopping mall). The media made a conscious effort to obscure the fact that he was a Muslim. If it were not for some selected websites such as World Net Daily, this information would have never been known. Maybe this is an occasion to test the objectivity of the media. How many will mention Professor Lebrescu's heroic act and attribute it to an Israeli?
