Iranian threat exaggerated, expert says    Yaakov Lappin
1. Have you not learned from the Holocaust? ITS TIME TO FIGHT
Not to walk into the chambers of death
(04.17.07)
2. Only 20,000-50,000
It is indeed comforting to know that only 20,000-50,000 would die in the event of an attack. Since this is obviously an acceptable number of civilian casualties, we can all relax.
Ira ,   New York, NY   (04.17.07)
3. Who Wants To Take A Chance?
A preemptive strike or actually, strikes, is still our best option. Exaggerated or not, waiting to get nuked is a pretty poor strategy. If you believe that the crazy fanatics in Iran are worried about our deterrent, you don't understand their lunatic beliefs. An Iran with nuclear missiles would be even more aggressive, would sponser more terrorism, would influence the whole region against our interests, & it would embolden Syria, Hezbollah, & Hamas to attempt action against us. No matter how you cut it, this is unacceptable. Rationalizing the threat by saying "only" twenty thousand would be killed in Tel Aviv is just a way of avoiding taking an unpleasant action.
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (04.17.07)
4. It takes a tragedy for us to act...
We always wait until its too late to do something. Very sad!
DR ,   Florida, USA   (04.17.07)
5. There is something wrong with the Israeli brain
So Mr. Rabid said that a bomb over Tel Aviv would kill only 25,000 and not 250,000. Well what can I say, Mr. Rabid, now I can sleep well at night, 25,000 dead that's ok, we can swallow that no problem Poor Iranian and we thought that they were bad people
Avi ,   Israel   (04.17.07)
6. AND WHY DO YOU HAVE 400 NUKES?? WHAT WAS THE POINT OF HAVING
THEM. THATS CRAZY. WOMEN HAVE MORE GUTS.
SUSAN ,   ISRAEL   (04.17.07)
7. ja!
WOULD NOT DESTROY COUNTRY? AND WHAT ABOUT MILLIONS OF DEAD, INFRAESTRUCTURE, AND SO ON? LONG LIVE ISRAEL
tomas ,   bsas,argentina   (04.17.07)
8. Only 20,000 dead Jews? I feel much better now.
A 20 kiloton nuclear bomb over Tel Aviv would kill only 20,000-25,000 Jews. What a great relief! Only around 3,000 civilians were murdered on Sept. 11, 2001 on American soil and Americans greatly over-reacted as U.S. leaders. After all, what is 20,000 murdered Jews, give or take a few thousand?
Allan ,   USA   (04.17.07)
9. Iran
Stop this devil now before he has the bomb or it will be much harder to do then and more dangerous as well. Increase sanctions and allow the Iranian people run him out of town, because if attacked they will all stand together even the students who want the government replaced. Increase sanctions, buy gas &oil from Saudia Arabia and boycott Iranian petrol, that will close their money they need to fianace their nuke plants!
ROXY ,   ISRAEL   (04.17.07)
10. #8
The sad thing is that world does feel the US over-reacted on Sept 11 2001. 25,000 Jews is 25,000 Jews too many. I don't want even one Israeli pebble moved out of its place because of Iran!
(04.17.07)
11. WHY ARE YOU SAD,DR?....#4
Few weeks back when Iran announced its new achievments you tended to believe and write that Israel's possession of arms is far too superior to Iran(which is true in reality).Today you express sadness writing that 'we wait until its too late'.Why the change,DR?As it is you write that Israel's army is far too superior to Iran, why do you express anxiety when your own people are not sure of what Iran had, what it has at the moment and what it will have in future or near future?Don't be sad as you will continue to read contradictory articles in your own press.
MAHMOOD ,   LONDON-UK   (04.17.07)
12. What is the Value of 20,000?
What's 20,000 from one nuke, compared to the millions of Iranians that will surely die due to Israel's retaliation? But of course, Iran may fire multiple missiles at Israel. If 3 get through into Tel Aviv, that's 60,000 by the authori's count. If 10 get through, well you figure the math. This is the bottom line: if a WMD is fired into Israel by Iran, Iran can expect to be bombed back to the stone age, along with Syria, Hezbollah, Hamas and anyone else involved. Iran knows it, apparently the author doesn't get it. Can anyone imagine 20,000 dead in Washington D. C. and what we (US) would do afterwards. Give me a break folks.
Dave Levy ,   Burbank. USA   (04.17.07)
13. Shows you what he thinks of Jews
"A 20 kiloton nuclear bomb over Tel Aviv would kill 20,000-25,000 people, not 250,000 as has been claimed," Ravid said. "Such an attack is very serious, but it is not the end of the Zionist dream," he added. " The former head is a present ass.
Steven ,   by the bay   (04.17.07)
14. Hey Mahmood. WHATEVER!
Jake   (04.17.07)
15. Susan , what 400 nukes?
Where did you pull that number from? First prove there are even 10. Not an easy thing when it has never been verified Israel even conducted a nuclear test.
Jake   (04.17.07)
16. Only 25,000 dead
Arms expert - HUH?! If Hiroshima wasn't so bad, how come Japan surrendered rather than fight to the last as had been expected? Maybe 25,000 dead is no big deal - unless you are one of them
ezra scheff ,   haifa   (04.17.07)
17. You people realise your nuts right?
Come on Iran wont use a nuke against israel for the same reason no other country will use a nuke against israel. Because america and israel would wipe any country that nukes israel off the map permanently. That pilot talking about qom is a complete ass. If he new anything about that city he would also know that Qom is as precious to the people of iran and many muslims as jerusalem is to jews and christians. Nuking qom is horrible. How can he say this and just get away with it. Ive never heard an iranian threaten to nuke an israeli city. Not once. Tehran is a huge city comparable in size an population to New York City. Nuking tehran would be genocide and mass murder. This difference in the argument is israel has 400 nukes in violation of NPT. Iran has none and their is no evidence they are building any and they have NEVER VIOLATED THE NPT. If any of you can show me where they have violated the NPT then maybe i will take your parinoid rants seriously.
AR ,   USA   (04.17.07)
18. Mahmood...I am not sad!
I am commenting on the sad state of our leaders who hesitaate to take action until its too late. 9/11 is a perfect example. Radical Islam is ruining the world through terror and scare tactics and we should act to stop it before it doesn any more harm. I know this bothers you b/c you sympathize with the terrorists, but in the end, terror does not pay!
DR ,   Florida, USA   (04.17.07)
19. "Only" 20.000 dead !
And waht if more than one missile ? And what if ten misiles ? What thinking ! May Hashem save us from such experts and May He Bless the IDF Bring back PM Menachem Begin Remember June of 1981 ? I do.
zvi ,   LA USA   (04.17.07)
20. Dr Strangelove
Calling Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb! And I assume that Tel Aviv and the surronding areas would be safe to live in and I assume that there won't be large emigration form Israel.
Joel ,   Ossining NY   (04.17.07)
21. Welcome to the club: leave this totally childish discussion
This discussion is quite frankly childish and beside the point. Israel is assumed to have nuclear weapons and delivery capabilities, and is therefore already playing a game of "deterrence", not with Iran, which doesn't have any yet, but with all the major nuclear powers, including "friendly" ones, on whose target lists Israel as a matter of course has its place. On those target lists one is not talking about an A-bomb but rather of three to four H-bombs which would wipe out the country. The danger really isn't Iran, but the whole nuclear "game" which puts citizens of all nuclear powers at risk of likely miscalculations or simple technical malfunctions. It is not Iran which should make Israelis sleep uneasily, but the mere presence of nuclear weapons which makes Israel a target. Europeans lived in fear of the miscalculations which could have been made by either side in the Cold War. In the case of Israel, the Zionist dream of strength through readiness to use military capacity no longer works: it only adds to the threat to its own citizens. The real question is not whether Iran might use the weapons and how many potential casualties that might cause, but how major powers would react to a potential nuclear exchange between Israel and Iran. Either they don't want deterrence broken, in which case both Israel and Iran potentially will be threatened with a strike by China, Russia ... or the USA, or they will let it happen. Do you think they, or for that matter the Israeli government, would then be worried by the number of deaths? In the logic of nuclear war planning civilian deaths in the millions are calculated into the plan by the governments which possess nuclear weapons because otherwise the game isn't worth playing. This will be true too of the Israeli government. Might be worth asking some questions about the government plans for what happens after you have all retreated to your secure rooms ...

22. THEN go it alone jews
dont DRAG USA into it.
(04.17.07)
23. #11 - Mahmood
DR must be proud that jerks like you follow his comments and observations. I guess "The Telegraph," "The Guardian" etc. are way too dull and boring publications fot you wherein you spend so much of your time reading Israeli newscasts. My statement to you is get the hell out of London and go back to poverty-stricken Pakistan where you belong. as for your comments regarding Iran...continue counting the beads in your hand and pray to your false Prophet Mohammad that India doesn't annihilate Pakistan in a nuclear whiff!
Sabientje ,   Utrecht   (04.17.07)
24. Mr. Rabid...
Are you one of those Jews that Iran has successfully put on their payroll for you to further advance their nuclear ambitions?
Sabientje   (04.17.07)
25. Response to 17
Israel can't be in violation of the NPT as they are not a signatory to it. Nobody is suggesting that we pre-emptively nuke Qom or Teheran. However they would be legitimate targets for a second strike. As would Iran's entire oil production infrastructure. You never Amenjahid threaten to nuke Israel? You must be deaf. The people of Iran probably would not want to nuke Israel or anyone else, but it's their responsibility to depose their evil leadership.
Michael ,   Israel   (04.17.07)
26. Hiroshama did not have enrichment
B"H We have to remember that uranium enrichment was not necessary for Hiroshama with its 120,000 killed, but for Nagasaki. Lets put enrichment and Nagasaki in the same sentence instead. The so-called expert has lost all credibility with me on this point.
Steve ,   USA   (04.17.07)
27. MAKE QOOM GO BOOM!
Alan ,   SA   (04.18.07)
28. #17 AR you said you never heared anyone in Iran threating..
threatening Israel with Nukes? I didn't know that Iranians were so deaf or dumb that they can't hear or understand their own people and leaders.
Hanna   (04.18.07)
29. Good news - but - Contamination ?
Dr. Yitzhak Ravid says nothing about contamination .. I wonder why ? This is not my field so | won't expose my ignorance but perhaps readers can explain what the effects of the fall out might mean. Air, water, crops etc Nice thought before I go to bed :-)
redkmike ,   tel aviv and london   (04.18.07)
30. #21 Ahmadinejad states that he would welcome Armageddon !
nice logical argument but that is not what the world is dealing with here. neither the Russians or Americans wanted a nuclear war so the Russians took their missiles out of Cuba. Ahmadinejad belongs to an Islamic death cult that believes that Armageddon will usher in the messiah. No logic here - next please !! :-)
