1. What about some modesty? Does this not pertain to mothers
breastfeeding?

3. It's impossible that in the Haredi community 69.3%
oppose it. Was it Reform Haredim that the poll was made on? 100% of Orthodox Haredim who value modesty, would oppose it.
The percentages in this poll is nothing but baloney.
According to your poll, the higher the education, the less they value modesty?
In short: Those in favor of immorality are in favor of immodesty.

4. Mothers breastfeeding
There are ways to breastfeed an infant very discreetly and modestly, there are special clothes made for that purpose. Ask me, I have breastfed 3 children, occasionally in a public venue (restaurants, airplanes, buses), without ever exposing myself.
Any woman who thinks that she has to flash her boobs in public in is feeding appetites other than the baby's.

8. #4 has the idea
The point is not whether mothers breastfeed in public or not; it's HOW they do it. My wife has also nursed three kids in all kinds of places, and nobody has ever objected, because she doesn't EXPOSE herself, and THAT is the point.
I wonder how the poll was worded, and if the results would have been different if the focus was on exposure and immodesty rather than simply feeding the baby.

10. Mothers I know of feed modestly
B"H
I am really happy to see young Jewish babies in public. Most of the mothers I know of feed them discreetly. I do not understand why people could be against breast feeding in public in that way.
Breast feeding has so many benefits for the mother and child that it should be encouraged wherever possible. I understand breast cancer rates decrease dramatically based on months of feeding as well as incidence of babies dying prematurely.
Breast feeding needs encouragement by the entire society, publically and privately in my opinion.

11. 60.4 % need to get a life
60.4% have a problem then! It's natural and beautiful. It is a perverse world that has attached too much importance to the breast, sexually, when it was designed to feed Junior - in public or otherwise, as the needs of Junior arise! Get a life.

12. I live in Canada and it's still an uncommon sight
I remember breasfeeding my baby in washrooms with the noise of toilets flushing all around. It was awful. Some malls have a mother's room now, but when babies get hungry, they have to be fed wherever they are.
Breastfeeding of babies should be encouraged. It's good for mom and baby. And there are ways of doing it modestly, without exposing anything.

14. Come on! Do you think this bothered Moses or Abraham?
Do you think that nursing mothers had rooms to hide in while our ancestors were wandering through the Sinai for 40 years, or when poor women gleaned in the fields in order to survive?
People who are offended that mothers stop to feed their babies - who after all, NEED TO NURSE REGULARLY - are far, FAR too uptight and insecure about "modesty" and care far, FAR too little about what really matters!

15. God created this way to feed babies
Breast feeding is normal and healthy. The proplem is in the eye of the beholder who can not look at something normal and beautiful because they have been educated to be sexualised in all their activities by pornographic images that are rife in westernised countries. If you want to fight something fight the evil men who use sex as a monetry growth business.

16. Should our wives show thier breasts in public!
Mothers of newly born babies should stay at home to take care of them, breastfeeding etc ..
Why should they go at this special an dangerous time for too young child to offices an stores, buses,
probably for healthy conditions breastfeading should be confined in the house not everywhere.
I wittness a stange young lady in her twenties breastbeeding her child at the entrance of a cinema crowded with teens, shamelessly her t shirt was completely open to show off her breasts to everbody!!!!!!
We can't tolerate with such sick minded freedom seekers anymore.

17. i did it.....
I breast fed in public, and no one ever knew. It was done with great discretion. Mind you, I always did what I could to do it at home, and even when I couldn't do it at home, and when I had to do it in public, I always looked for a quiet corner somewhere.
But I want to say that a society has skewed values when condones women who bare their breasts in a magazine or do risque poses in skimpy attire to sell cars, fashion, or whatever, but everyone gets all upset about some public breastfeeding. I wonder if those who are outraged are the same one who ogle a woman in a bikini at the beach! It's like they think breasts are great, but just don't use them for what God intended.

18. #1 and #2
The Hareidi figures could be correct because, as per #2, they wouldn't even think that when they say, breastfeed in public, it means showing off your wares to the world. Many Hareidi ladies nurse on buses, etc. They do so in a discreet manner, whereby no-one sees anything and the baby is satisfied. My own wife nursed one of our children 3 times on an international flight, while sitting next to a man, who at the end of the flight asked her how the baby had gone all night without food!

20. #16 - Martin in UK
1) Some babies nurse for a year or more. Does that mean that a mother has to be "confined in the house" as you say, for a whole year? Or longer, if she has more babies later on?
2) Stores and buses are not dangerous in themselves (unless there's a terrorist lurking nearby). Moms carry their babies in snugglies, close to their hearts, or in comfortable strollers.
Babies need to visit doctors regularly. How could that be arranged other than by going out? Mothers need to shop for their children, run errands, etc.
3) That young lady with both breasts uncovered was not in the business of nursing her baby, she was exposing herself. Why did you look if you find it offensive?
4) Teen agers are familiar with breasts, just as they are familiar with drugs, abortion, premarital sex, violence, and so on. The sight of a nursing mother would not shock them at all.
5) The act of a woman exposing her breasts may be inmodest, but definitely it's not "sick". What a strange choice of words!
Nursing is a life-giving act. It's not "sick". "Sickness" may be in the mind of the observer.
6) Proper breastfeeding in public can be done by covering with a sweater or a shawl and unless you actually approach and stare, you would not see any skin to offend you.
6) Your grammar suggests that English is your second language. Any chance that you are not a native born European and maybe come from a different kind of society?
Maybe you'd be happier living in a more conservative country, Martin, where women stay at home and dress and behave according to their husbands' wishes.

21. Something private
I have seen breastfeeding in public places, on trains, and other places, observant and less observant, and it does bother me. I look upon breastfeeding as a private even emotional contact between a mother and her baby, and as such, it should not be something one sees in public.

You took the words right out of my fingers. Thank you.
Liz (whose youngest son once "kept a diary" of the strange places I have been breastfed!)
PS the whole article was a load of crap - what sort of idiot would do a survey about people's reactions to a breastfeeding mother anyway? Breastfeeding a natural part of life - a baby has to eat.

25. A maternity blouse is the perfect solution.
Times are a changing. A maternity blouse gives mothers the ability to breastfeed where ever they are comfortable, ask the Haredim, 100% discreet and pretty to boot.

26. #17 so did I
and just as you describe: as much as possible at home and when necessary very discretely in public places. Even did it once on a very delayed 400 bus which plys the route between Jrusalem and Tel Aviv. No one even saw what was going on - though they'd have heard the noise if I hadn't!

30. The Greatness of G-d and all of his Creation
When one considers all the complex functions and parts of the body; The bones, muscles, and organs; Eyes, ears, and all the senses; G-d's creation is amazing and wonderful. The beauty of dance, sports, song, and everything else we may do with our G-d given bodies is brilliant;. Then we may look at those around us and see people who are less fortunate with the challenges they were given. Nothing but nothing in the human body including sex, breast feeding, "taking a dump" etc. is "dirty". Only people's perverted perceptions and inability to truly appreciate G-d's greatness is reflected by those who perceive a mother feeding her baby as something less than sublime. Those who in the name of religion demean G-d creations are defiling G-d's name. (e.g Ahmadinejad and his planned policing). If you view G-d's creations and see splendor and beauty, you are blessed. If you perceive only sin and debaseness, you are vile and a disgrace before the magnificence of our Creator.
