1. Who is to blame for the "Palestinian problem"?
YMBMY ,   Modiin, Israel   (04.18.07)
Nice to see for once that the young Palestinians realize that their leadership is the problem, not Israel. Perhaps they will question other things, like why Suha Arafat get so much money when the rest of the people are crying proverty. Unfortunately, as long as the Arab leadership scapegoats Israel for the hardships it causes to its people (and the UN acts as an ignorant, obedient servant), there will never be peace.
2. "Right of Return" is a tool to de-legitimize Israel
BigE ,   Israel   (04.18.07)
There is the strange definition of "refugee" that the UN has applied only to the Palestinian Arabs. This is from Joan Peters' book "From Time Immemorial": "For example, while I was examining United Nations data from 1948 onward, a seemingly casual alteration of the definition of what constitutes an Arab "refugee" from Israel caught my attention. I passed it by at first, and only returned to it after investigation of refugee transfers in other parts of the world had led me to note what the general definition of refugee eligibility was. In other cases the more or less universally used description of eligibility included those people who were forced to leave "permanent" or "habitual" homes. In the case of the Arab refugees, however, the definition had been broadened to include as "refugees" any persons who had been in "Palestine" for only two years before Israel's statehood in 1948. "
3. Nonsense!
Palestinian ,   Palestine   (04.18.07)
This is untrue by far! This is media propaganda directed to distort facts and give a sense that the Palestinian people had given up on the right of return! Just go to the refugee camps all over the Middle East and ask Palestinian refugees what do they think about their right to return?
4. Where the hell on earth did u meet them!!
Pali Lover ,   Jerusalem   (04.18.07)
These ppl represent less than 1% of the pali population. All the pali refugees who live in the worst conditions in jordan/syria/lebanon and palestine would like to return back to their stolen houses. Me myself I live in jerusalem and I want palestine back. Every single inch of palestine . And I am confident we will :)
5. Amen to that
Israel   (04.18.07)
We need to replace our government AND the Palestinian with bright intelligent students that accept the way things are.
6. Arab 'brethren' beat up brothers. Palestinians are pawns
Palestinians ,   wake up!   (04.18.07)
Their Arab brothers use them to further the cause of annihilating Israel, and nothing else. They don't care about the actual well-being of Palestinians, or they would treat them better in their own nations. Palestinians, wise up and look out for your best interest: realistic compromise towards a Palestinian state.
7. THE REFUGEES DON'T WANNA COME BACK?!
(04.18.07)
(But, but, I thought the P.A. said they were all pining and wailing to return to their beloved ancient home land!!!) Well now!!! Isn't THAT the joke of the century!!! "Our leadership is corrupt..." NOOOO!!! YOU DON'T SAY!!!
8. A New York Times correspondent in Mexico was recently fired
Aparthied ,   Boston USA   (04.18.07)
for only interviewing people who said what she wanted to hear while ignoring the obvious majority that had a different opinion.
9. Return
rick ,   Bmore USA   (04.18.07)
Congratulations. This makes sense. I would like to suggest that Muslims who move to Europe or the USA consider a change of worship. Frankly you and your descendants represent a danger to the West. If you like the idea of living among us then change your form of worship. Islam will ALWAYS be subject to Wahabi madness. You are a danger to any society that harbors you. Worship the God of ABRAHAM as a Christian or a JEW. But leave Islam behind you. Secondly the Saudis might offer Northwest Saudi Arabia as a "homeland" for dispersed Palestinians. The area is between Elat and Medina.
10. Get Real
Khalid ,   The Netherlands   (04.18.07)
your correspondent has interviewed how many Palestinians? Four? five? There are around four million registered refugees? What makes you think that the four you interviewed represent the whole Palestinian refugee population. You just interviewed the people who told you what you want to hear
11. all lies and falsehood believe me
rashid ,   palistinian   (04.18.07)
i am number on palistinian in the world and i can tell you that we want to go back to take over from the zionist state we want all the jews to go back to poland and russian where they come from because there was never any jews in the arab land i am looking forward to go to palistine for the first time to take over the zionist homes and farms and put the islamic flag on them
12. As everywhere differences of opinion
Sam ,   Canada   (04.18.07)
There is a difference of opinion among Palestinians as to whether they want to stay where they are, go to another country or go to Palestine/Israel. The leadership ignores them because they have their own preferences and use the people as pawns for their own agenda. The leadership would like to know what assets they could get for dropping the right of return.Hence the desire of Abbas to enter final status negotiations. (and get EU money too) But as Hamas makes clear Palestinians still lean to destroying Israel.
13. returning refugees
Israel Zwick ,   nyc   (04.18.07)
The UAE is forced to take in thousands of foreigners because they need more labor for all their cosntruction projects. wouldn't it make sense for them to offer these jobs tot the Palestinian "refugees" who would then enjoy a much better life than they have now. It's unfortunate that the refugees continue to be used as a weapon against Israel instead of resolving the problem to their satisfaction.
14. refugee issue
moosa ,   dubai   (04.18.07)
If Israel think that all palestinian refugee living in different places will not go back, then why israel is not accepting to give those people the right to choose Thank you
15. See, They've been rich and been poor. Rich is better!!!!
jan   (04.18.07)
16. what's the news?
yosef   (04.18.07)
So Yaakov Lappin found a single Palestinian says he'd rather live in democratic Europe than a Muslim Arab country? Duh? Even if there were 100,000 like minded Palestinians and even if the Europeans agreed to take them there would still be a problem.
17. Gee, Nobody Wants 'em!
emanon ,   USA   (04.18.07)
And they don't want a "Right of Return" . . . Human bargaining chips after all.
18. Israel should promote this with the Pals
threat hunter ,   eisham, israel   (04.18.07)
even if this is a minority view, which i suspect it probably still is to some degree, it is a view and a movement that israel could successfully promote in a cooperative manner with the palestinian people. we are not in an intractable problem. the key is to reaching that agreement and sticking by it.
19. No right of return for the reason
(04.18.07)
that you don't belong there anyway.
20. Rashid go learn some real history facts
MF ,   Israel   (04.18.07)
The Land of Israel was originally the homeland of the Jewish people, who over the centuries were victims of a series of foriegn conquerers who slaughtered and exiled many of them, which is why there were Jews resident for centuries in other lands. Please check this out in any respectable academic text-book! Only some of the Jews came back to the Land of Israel from Poland and Russia, and the land was never completely emptied of Jews as you seem to believe. And another thing you dont seem to have heard about - the Jews who lived in Arab states for centuries and were driven out and their property stolen from them in the 20th century? They didnt sit in UN tents and whine and beg for hand-outs, they got on with it and helped rebuild the Jewish community in Israel.
21. WHY NO DESIRE TO EMIGRATE TO OIL RICH ISLAMIC OUNTRIES
B ,   Us   (04.18.07)
Why is there no desire to emigrate to Islamic countries. Why no desire to live and prosper in Saudi Arabia where millions of jobs go to non-Muslims. Why do Muslims crave the West and want to destroy it at the same time. Why are Arab nations unable to produce or create industry except for mining of the black gold that is causing climate change. Why does Islam seek to dominate World by terror and hate rather than by achievement and good deeds.
22. To all, #4 is such a faker, no Arab calls Jerusalem
Saul ,   Eretz Yisrael   (04.18.07)
Jerusalem, they call it Al-Quds, your not even a good fake.
23. Right of return
Palestinian refugee   (04.18.07)
Israel has to give us the right to return to our homes. it's not you ask if you want to return or not then I would give the whole population this right or not based on a survey. Every Palestinian on earth should have the right to return to his land and it's up to him after if he returns or not. Why don't all Jews in the world go to Israel now. They know they can go at any time and get the citizenship only because they are Jews. It should be the same for us. We should be able at any time to return home whenever we want. Surveys are irrelevant in this matter and have nothing to do with granting us our right to return home. Israelis are trying to find a way out to get around this right by asking Palestinians do you want to return or not but it won't work.
24. #17 "Nobody wants them"
Sam ,   Canada   (04.18.07)
A Canadian minister made the offer that Canada would take in 30,000 Palestinian refugees and Palestinian rejectionists denounced him. Palestinian rejectionists rule even though they might be the minority. They don't allow for a survey to be taken so that the world might know what most Palestinians really want.
25. It is not "return"
Robby ,   San Jose, USA   (04.18.07)
How can they "return" when they have never been there.
26. Common Sense - Palestinians
Robby ,   San Jose, USA   (04.18.07)
Can you imagine what would happen to the Palestinian economy if only 1.5 million migrated to the West Bank/Gaza? It would be chaos.
27. Why don't we hear more about
Tracy W   (04.18.07)
the treatment of Palestinians as refugees in Arab countries? This constant media campaign to find and publicize every little blemish in Israeli society should have a counterpart in disclosing what really goes on in Arab societies. It's only fair.
28. surprised that people from as far away as Canada
lakshmi   (04.18.07)
pontificate about whether Palestinians want to return or not. This article is deliberately skewed to undermine the Unity Government and support Israel and I'm afraid the same applies to our Candian friend
29. 20 The land of Israel was origionally the homeland of the
Apartheid ,   Boston USA   (04.18.07)
Canaanites. The Israelites were heavily into stealing land even back then.
30. Israel will be the land of Jews FOREVER
Gidi ,   Jerusalem   (04.18.07)
sorry rashid, go back to Saudi Arabia or whatever you want. Land of Israel has and always been Jewish property, there's nothing arabic about it. Forget your fantasy. Israel is Jewish and Jewish forever.
