My 5yo old daughter was told by several classmates (last year) that she wouldn't find a husband because she's dark skinned. We spoke to the head of the school. She did address our concerns but these comments (Shvartse etc) were all too common. We moved her to a MO Zionist Yeshiva and this is no longer a problem.

It is only because of the Nazi racist idelology that "Aryan" has become synonymous with "light-skinned and fair haired". The Persians and northern Indians are also "Aryan" and most of them tend to be dark-skinned.Secondly,you also seem to perpetuate the notion (which Ms Farkas alludes to) that it in an essential condition of "Ashkenaziness" to be fair-skinned as opposed to Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews.Also not true-there are many Ashkenazim who are very dark and swarthy & stereotypically Middle Eastern looking(again, "stereotype" being an operatiev word) and many Sepharadi/Mizrahi who are very fair.In the societies in Northern and eastern Europe (e.g., Germany,Poland) in which the general non-Jewish population was by and large lightskinned and fair,the Jews in general(who were Ashkkenazi) were usually perceived and depicted as dark and swarthy by the general population.It is ironic and sad that some segments of the Ashkenazi (haredi and non-haredi) population evaluate the worth and beauty of an individual by the degree of skin tone-but not uncommon.You can also look at other societies-Haiti comes to mind-where the lighter skinned descendants of Africans and French colonists discriminated against their darker, "purer" African brothers, all the while proclaiming themselves sons of Africa.

I am not Jewish. Far from it. But the more I see races (more like cultures where people come in many tones), colourism is rampant. I've sometimes been baffled at how South asian some Jews look while some look Swedish. But colourism is here to stay and darker folks should not exacerbate it by desperately seeking lighter only mates.
