31. #2 Except Vanunu is no longer in prison, while Pollard is.
AK   (05.22.07)
There goes your entire argument.
32. Vannunu is still imprisioned
Mirriah ,   USA   (05.22.07)
Oh yeah, Vanunu is no longer in a physical prison, but he still remains incarcerated within Israel with severe restrictions on his liberty. Plus, the information Pollard absconded made its way to the Russians during the freaking cold-war. Agent of an ally or not, Pollard's spying led to a security breach with one of America's arch-enemies.
33. to #31
John ,   Jerusalem   (05.23.07)
The argument is very much still intact because the principle is the same: they both committed treason. Additionally, they are both serving the sentences given to them: Pollard for life and Vannunu for 18 years. Vannunu is free because he served his time, while Pollard is still behind bars for life.
34. #32 Nonsense. Pollard's info never made it to Russia.
AK   (05.23.07)
The agent actually spying for Russia was Hensen, a good Catholic FBI counter-intelligence agent already proven to be the Soviet mole responsible fore the alleged Pollards crime of transferring info to Russians. Don't you read any newspapers or listen to the news? Hansen is in prison and will probably be paroled before Pollard. As to Vanunu being 'incarcerated' in Israel, rather than in prison, how about 'incarcerating' Pollard in the USA?
35. John, Polard was neither accused nor convicted of treason.
AK   (05.23.07)
There was no open trial and Pollard was peruaded to plea-baigain. The government has broken the plea bargain agreement on the secret say so of Weinberger, who long after Hansen was caught admitted that he'd made a mistake. The fact is that Pollard's conviction was not appealed timely by his lawyer (was it an oversight?) and the facts of the case, which were never tried in any court of law, were never reviewed by any higher court. Pollard remains in prison because of legal technicality and no president wants to appear to give in to the Jews. If there was a true miscarriage of justice, Pollard is it. For argument sake, let's wait and see the sentence metered out to the Chinese-American, just convicted of spying for China --he transferred really damaging stuff. Like Pollard, he also wasn't convicted of treason. The last I heard, he was facing 12 years, while Pollard has already been in prison for 20. But let's wait, perhaps he'll also get life without parole. There is truly no pretty explanation why the only spies executed were Rosenbergs, the Jews ,and the only person convicted of spying for a friendly country getting a life sentence without parole is also a Jew. You’re free to disagree with me, but the facts speak for themselves.
36. Send Him to Israel
Phillip ,   NYC USA   (05.23.07)
Ok... release Pollard and send him and his fat wife out of the country. But also cancel all defence treaties the US has with Israel. Also, the $3 billion and weapons.... the US keeps them. So I believe this is a fair trade. End of Story.
37. No matter what any of you do, Pollard is still going to rot!
Erik ,   Santa Clara, CA   (05.23.07)
We can all blabber back and fourth all day. The bottom line is Pollard is still going to rot in jail for the rest of his life, and rightfully so. He would have been released years ago if he had decided to play ball. However he just shoots his mouth off, doesn’t EVEN apply for parole and then acts like he’s a hero and everyone should kiss his sorry ass. Screw him and the horse he rode in on. A pea bargain isn’t worth squat. It isn’t even binding especially since Pollard refused to show any contrition at the before sentencing. He decided to play the public opinion game on 60 minutes no less and he LOST BIG TIME. Pollard isn’t going anywhere, so all of you Pollardites better learn to deal with it.
38. to #35
John ,   Jerusalem   (05.24.07)
True, he was never tried in open court because this can't be done. Trials of spies have to be done behind closed doors in order to protect the testimony about what the alleged spy stole, how, and whom he gave it to. If these facts were to come out in open court, then everybody would know the secrets that we are trying to guard. Second, Pollard was never convicted because he agreed to a plea bargain deal, indicating his guilt. Judges have the final decision on whether or not to accept a plea deal as presented by the prosecuter. The judge can always impose a different sentence. I'm not sure how it went down in the Pollard case, since it was a closed trial. But, we can see at least 2 things: 1) that Pollard indicated his own guilt when he agreed to a plea; and 2) the nature and scope of his crimes were so grevious as to land him in prison for life. As for your question as to why Jewish spies are treated diferently, I would ask (daring to be labeled anti-Semitic) why are there so many Jews involved in high crimes against the state?
39. Former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger said ...
Rebecca Kmet ,   California, USA   (05.29.07)
little damage was done to America by Pollard. Newspapers such as American Free Press says great damage was done by Pollard, but the AFP is notroiously anti-semitic. Caspar Weinberger had one Jewish parent, so was not rabidly anti-semitic. But he failed to do anything other than say-do expressions in support of Pollard's release. The viciousness of people in authority in America toward Jews that I personally have experienced gives me little hope that Pollard will ever be released. His freedom will be when Hashem takes him home, and OH! what a freedom that will be.
