1. Yaron London, you seem to demonstrate similar shortcomings.
Uzi ,   Haifa   (06.08.07)
Just one example: How sensible is your 'rationale' that Israel must continue to support the people of Gaza and provide them with essential supplies, because of their chaos, because they are incapable of fending for themselves and because Europeans won't help them?
2. Another column that stops short
Glenn ,   Canada   (06.08.07)
of stating what's really on the writer's mind. Does he fear, like us, ordinary talkbackers, of getting censored? So, Mr London, if Lieberman's ideas are wrong (I agree with that), what's your alternative? Is it up to talkbackers to say it? Cryptically? OK. The answer to this problem is not in giving any more land away. And it's not in turning Israel into a binational state. That's it, in a very cryptical nutshell.
3. Gaza is already an enemy state sworn to our destruction
redkmike ,   tel aviv - Israel   (06.08.07)
I would have no problem giving Gaza six months (which was Lieberman's suggestion) to find alternative sources of water and electricity. They have decided on a course of action and must be prepared to pay the costs. Sharon's intention was that Gaza would not be our responsibility and it shouldn't be - we left ! He said, 'if there is any attack from Gaza they will pay very heavily. Not like Olmert firing at empty fields for a year.
4. London should sdtart worrying about Israel instead.
Isaac Haskiya ,   Roskilde - Denmark   (06.08.07)
Palestinians must accept the bitter reality of Gaza being their own problem and responsibility. Israel is neither its father nor its mother. What Europeans will do or not is their business; it seems that its left-wing wants to recognize Hamas, the enemy of Israel. Israel will react to such a decision. Nobody sees the strip as a European protectorate! How Gaza will be geographically connected to the West Bank is also mainly a Palestinian problem. Once and for all Palestinians have to accept the principle of solving their own problems instead of fighting Israel. As to territorial exchange, it should be physically studied before saying "no it canĀ“t be done"! It might succeed in some places. Start worrying about the future of Israel instead.
5. definitely some truth to this
Eli ,   USA   (06.08.07)
Lieberman knows what to say to generate populist appeal. But don't all politicians not in a position of leadership do this? I mean look at Obama. Lieberman is not doing anything special in that regard.
6. better lieberman than olmert
kutuzov ,   new york   (06.09.07)
Yeah yeah yeah... he's a russian fool... blah blah blah... I'd take him and his ideas any day over the Israeli-born Olmert, who is about to give away the whole country for a "peace" with syria which will destroy israel the first opportunity. Russian or not, at least Lieberman is smart enough not to do that. Yaron London... you're just a fool... no other word for you brother... just do us all a favor and keep your thoughts to yourself unless you actually have something constructive to say.
7. Lieberman is the best Israel has at this time
Steve ,   USA   (06.09.07)
8. Trivial details
Gary A. Glaser ,   Hutchinson, MN, USA   (06.09.07)
The trouble with worrying about about every trivial detail is that it leads to a paralysis of action where nothing is ever done. This paralysis would lead to a stagnant government afraid to do anything.
9. very interesting, but what do you propose?
Antonio ,   Haifa   (06.08.07)
So true that Lieberman is the only person in the government that agrees to look at the big picture. And it is also true that his plan for separation is not racist, but rather common sense. Arabs should live in their own country, under their flag, with their language and anthem. But what exactly is Yaron London proposing about Gaza? That it remains stuck on the Israeli tit while biting it relentlessly? Israel needs to let go of Gaza, and let the Arabs that live there figure out how and where they will get their water, electricity, and everything else. It is NOT our responsibility. We sorted ourselves out in Israel, they can sort themselves out where they are.
10. Lieberman is for the most part right
Concerned Israeli   (06.09.07)
London's logic that Israel should be Gaza's nanny is flawed. It's precisely because Israel has taken this job for so long that the Palestinians have not had any incentive to transfer their rage and hatred into political and economic institution-building. They have been bottle-fed by Israel and the international community for too long. Lieberman is right. We need to completely disconnect from Gaza and if there is a humanitarian crisis, let the UN do their job. Maybe NATO won't have an interest in entering Gaza as London says, but the UN must step up to the plate. The failed Palestinian national project demands of the UN that it fulfill its primary objective - keeping world peace and nation-building. This would be a perfect opportunity for the useless international body to show the world its worth. London is promoting an improvement in the status quo when the only thing that will work at this point is to wipe the slate clean and start from scratch.
11. Israeli electricity : GAZA behavior
moshe_Israel ,   k.motzkin, Israel   (06.09.07)
should Israel continue to supply electricity, water, building supplies, even food toGAZA in spite of pal terrorists? Perhaps Israeli supplies should depend upon pal behavior : pal Terror, rockets = rationed Israeli supplied electricity , water , etc QUESTION: Should a few hundred pal terrorists control our behavior towards 1,500,000 GAZANs ? another question : Should the Israelis in Sderot be threatened , some injured, a few killed by a few hundred pal terrorists ? ? ? moshe_Israel
12. Yaron london- Typical Israeli arrogance
Michael ,   Israel/Australia   (06.09.07)
And here we have another example of the typical arrogant israeli mentality, every promise over the last 15 years about what would happen in israel if certain things were done, such as withdrawl from territories, would lead to an air of peace on so on... Well friends the pragmatists were the most accurate with thier predictions, the situation is far, far worse. Israel is on a complete decline, millitarily, politically and our deterance has almost but been completely destroyed by the short sighted and narrow minded behaviour of certain people obsessed with appeasing the non jewish , yes thats right the non jewish elements of the world, certain that if they wave their flag for them the "goyim" will like them, I think that its call "Ain zatz Gupen" or "erev rav " in hebrew. No body gives a sh_t. Avigdor Liberman is probably the only latral and logical thinker remaining in Israeli polotics today, all the rest are full of Sh_t oblivious to whats going on around them, lied to as children by communist israeli fantasy stroies about the new equal world and the lessons that the the world learned from the holocaust, just think that I studied at NSW university, where the Dean of History gave lectures about the hoax of the twentieth century, a book about how the jews faked the deaths of the holocaust, Oh, NSW uni is in Sydney Aust. not Iran. When I raised my hand to object he simply replied to me that we all knew that jews liked to exagerate, to which all the students laughed. This just goes to illustrate how Israeli's haven't got a clue about whats going on in the western (christian) world, I love it when Israli's call Israel a western coutry, didn't anyone ever tell you western is a politically correct term for christian coutries. Israel is about as western as pakistan or uzbekistan. I remember being told that christain people just think of jews as blond arabs with degrees. Oh, Yaron london, when will you wake up and realise that your'e a jew and Israel belongs to you, the arabs are the colonialists that have over the last 250 years invaided Israel, from Arabia, as part of a global conquest to convert the world to Islam, no, don't listen to me treat the arabs with real equality, meaning believe what they say and trust in their ability to carry out their intentions, that is realy open mindedness and a true display of equality.Just as the palistinians have a democratic right to vote for Hamas 65% of the population, that means that they have exercised their right to vote in a party whos declare vision is the complete destruction of the Jewish people, note I didn't write Isaeli, because I was quoting them. Start being a journalist for the people who pay your wage, and start telling the truth and accurately relay to use your constituents as to what is going on in the arab countries around use and accurately quote what they are saying, what they are investing their time and money in and what their declaed future plans are, I'll give you a clue, war from the north, syria and hizbolla, from the south gaza (el kaida) and hamas etc. Pulling the wool over peoples eyes is what caused 6, 000,000 people to remain in Europe " You know the cultural ones" who are always trying to show the world that there is a reson that they killed the jews just look at what they are allegedly doing to the poor humble arabs, maybe they did the world a service, then they gave yossi belin $5 million a year to advance his ideas, that concveniently suite their agenda.
13. yaron is correct: we must continue the current failures
mike ,   israel (formerly usa   (06.09.07)
no new ideas needed here. let's dismiss everyone who thinks 'out of the box' as a mere byproduct of their environment of origin because, as everyone knows, the current political and procedural ultra-failure is the best and only way to go. we don't need new ideas that won't work when we have these current, time-tested failures that we need to blindly adhere to, thank you very much. new ideas are not welcome here because everyone is content beating the pulp of long-dead horses.
14. And Oslo Wasn't "Flawed Thinking"???
Terry ,   Eilat, Israel   (06.09.07)
Disengagement wasn't flawed thinking? Retreating from S. Lebanon wasn't flawed thinking? Giving the Sinai to a hostile enemy state wasn't flawed thinking? Ceding the Golan to Syria isn't flawed thinking? The thinking that is "flawed" is YOURS.
15. Water and Electricity
Sam Weinstein ,   USA   (06.09.07)
Would I subject the people of Gaza to epidemics from lack of Power and Water if Israel cut's their power off. They want to kill me so why do I care.
16. Typical Elitist non-Russian Ashkenazi Nonsense
Jew ,   Eretz Israel   (06.09.07)
Who let this person write? He has no grasp of critical thinking whatsoever. He asks irrelevant questions - like what's gonna happen to Gaza if we stop spoonfeeding it? The point is that - IT'S NOT OUR PROBLEM WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO GAZA. The "occupation" of Gaza is over and so is our responsibility for Gaza. We are under no obligation whatsoever to help them, especially when they're devastating Israeli towns with rockets. Whatever they need to get - they can try to get it from Egypt - the border is wide open. Or from UN or EU. Bottomline - it's NOT our problem. In fact, it is INSANE to keep helping them with this kind of hostility coming from Gaza.
17. Flawed Assumption About Ethnicity
David ,   Israel   (06.09.07)
Intelligence and dynamism are traits of individuals, not ethnic groups. Reverse ethnocentrism, as expressed by this author, is still a failure of intellectual erudition. This is not to say there aren't smart, educated Russians. There are many, but they are, when the chips are down, individual Jews and not Russians. There are also smart and dynamic sephardim, anglos, french jews, etc.
18. Lieberman border changes vs Meretz vision
Ilan ,   Ariel   (06.10.07)
In some ways Lieberman's vision is much more humane as it only entails a reassignment of citizenship and not the pogrom approach as done to the Israelis living in Gush Katif who had everything taken from them. Personally I do not agree in forcibly taking citizenship away from any Israeli. I just wish that London and the Israeli left had the minimal amount of honesty and consistency that Lieberman does have.
19. Lieberman's flawed vision
Dr. B. D. Shepen ,   Caesarea   (06.10.07)
Yaron London accuses Lieberman of flawed visiion and oversimplification.Yet he ignores the flawed visdiion of those who are in power and have been in the past. The demographic arab time bomb is ticking ever louder and faster. Contrary to London's comments the precedent of countries rearranging borders is an established precedent, whether the populations of those areas like it or not. Regarding Gaza it is absurd to allow daily shelling of our cities while we have the means to retaliate economically. This can be done in stageswith simultaneous bombing of the homes of Hamas leadership. Sderot will be peaceful only when it hurts the terrorists more to continuie tthan it does to stop their shelling.
20. Lieberman is propping up the worst PM ever
Beni Elon for PM   (06.10.07)
21. Rarely is Myopia So Elegantly Touted Over Strategic Thinking
