Humiliation and arrogance on the settlers behalf is not a sufficient reason for their hatred. What is the problem with Jewish settlers living in those areas? In fact some of them have stated that they dont mind living in those areas as palestinian citizens but they were refused. Isnt that racist?
32. Danny's [#26) problems
Dan ,   London   (06.13.07)
"What Israel should have is a person in every embassy whose job is to oversee the media in his country. He/She would have noticed the lazy British newspapers uncritically publishing PR releases that mendaciously claimed that a "boycott" was passed " And yet you worry about the quality of scholarship!
33. Not just you Lapid who wants to live!
Ahmad ,   Ramalla   (06.13.07)
Mr. Lapid do you think all the Palestinians are Hamas or Jihad??? Most people here don’t care about you or politics they just want to live normally like a human being. It seems that you never saw or visited the apartheid wall, the main aim of this wall is to make the Palestinians lives much more miserable, taking more lands from them and it has nothing to do with suicides attacks. If this wall was made to protect Israel why it divides Arabic neighborhoods into two or more parts?? Why it was build on Arabs lands destroying farms and dividing villages into separate parts? The checkpoints are same story, there are around 600 checkpoints in the westbank, and nearly all of them are between Palestinians cities and villages, TOO far from Israel. The settlements complete the Israeli plan, everyday there are more settlements and settlers moving to the westbank. They take more lands, dividing the westbank into more sectors and of course making the Palestinians specially the villagers' lives catastrophic.
34. The only occupation is Arab
S. Yoram   (06.13.07)
Writer is wrong. Jewish rights to settle are the same on both sides of the green line. If the settlements are illegal, so is Tel Aviv (see e.g. Prof. "Eugene Rostow). According to intenational law only Jews were given national rights in Western Palestine and there is an urgent obligation for dense Jewish settlement in all of Western Palestine. There were Jewish settlements "beyond the green line" until they were destroyed by illegal Arab aggression in 1948 or before. Thus the only illegal occupation was done by Egypt and Trans-Jordan in 1948. Transjordan is Jordan and its extent is four fifths of Palestine, which is the Palestinian Arab state. The rights of Jews according to the mandate are still valid and are enshrined in the charter of the UN and in the ICJ. For further details on the Palestine Mandate see http://www.mythsandfacts.com/Conflict/mandate_for_palestine/Mandate_for_Palestine.pdf
35. Well writen but wrong
Serge ,   Antwerp, Belgium   (06.13.07)
This opinion is very well writen, but it is wrong. Who believes these academics care about the palestinians. They do not even care for the people of Darfur who are massacred by their own government. Which British academic cares that you don't want to die ? In fact they do care, that is exactly what they want.
36. Other Side Of The Coin
Zeev ,   Quirat Shemona   (06.13.07)
In the last weeks, all I am reading on this issue, are huge one sided defences by every fellow Israeli. I am strongly against the boycott however...................Perhaps while responding in defence, as we israelis always do so well, we should also take a moment out to consider that perhaps are behaviour (against our cousins) is extreme. And the British boycott is an alarm bell ringing.
37. OCCUPATION
MAHIR ZARA ,   TEL AVIV, ISRAEL   (06.13.07)
ALL OCCUPATIONS ARE THE NATURAL CONSEQUENCE OF ANY MILITARY CONFLICT, WHICH END ONLY WITH PEACE BETWEEN THE BELLIGERENTS, ACCORDING TO THE OCCUPIER'S REQUESTS. THAT IS WHAT WARS ARE FOUGHT FOR. THE OCCUPIER IS THE WINNER OF THE WAR, NEVER TO BE TREATED AS ITS LOSER. THE LENGTH OF ISRAEL'S OCCUPATION IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE ARAB'S REFUSAL TO ACCEPT THE PEACE THAT ISRAEL RIGHTLY SEEKS; THE RIGHT TO EXIST IN SECURITY AND PEACE, SO THAT YAIR AND ALL OTHER ISRAELIS WILL NOT HAVE TO DIE IN VIOLENCE. NOTHING LESS WILL END THE OCCUPATION. THE ARABS STARTED THE VIOLENCE, AND THEY NOW HAVE TO LIVE WITH ITS CONSEQUENCES. IF THEY DO NOT LIKE TO BE OCCUPIED, THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE TAKEN UP ARMS. IF THEY DO NOT LIKE THE OCCUPATION, THEY SHOULD NOT REFUSE TO MAKE PEACE, AND THEN COMPLAIN ABOUT THE OCCUPATION, ITS QUALITY OR ITS LENGTH. OUTSIDERS WHO WISH THE OCCUPATION TO END WILL BE WELL ADVISED TO CONVINCE THE OCCUPIED TO PREFER PEACE. NO VICTORIOUS NATION HAS EVER ACCEPTED TO BE TREATED AS IF THOUGH IT WAS VANQUISHED, NEITHER WILL ISRAEL.. ISRAEL IS NOT THE OCCUPIER BY CHOICE, BUT BY OVERWHELMING AND UNQUESTIONABLE NECESSITY. ONE DOES NOT WIN IN WAR, IN ORDER TO ACCEPT THE OTHER SIDE'S DEMANDS. IF THE BOYCOTTING BRITISH ACADEMICS HAVE NOT YET GRASPED THESE BASIC FACTS, THEY SHOULD GO BACK TO SCHOOL, TO REFRESH THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF HISTORY, BOTH RECENT AND PAST.
38. YAIR LAPID'S LETTER
MAHIR ZARA ,   TEL AVIV, ISAREL   (06.13.07)
THE BRITS WILL BE WELL ADVISED TO REMEMBER THEIR OWN HISTORY AS OCCUPIERS, INCLUDING THAT OF GERMANY, WHOSE OCCUPATION ENDED WITH ITS RECOGNITION OF DEFEAT AND ACCEPTANCE OF PEACEFUL EXISTENCE AS THE CORNER STONE OF ITS ASPIRATIONS AND POLICIES. THOSE WHO REJECT PEACE SHOULD NOT COMPLAIN ON BEING OCCUPIED. KILLERS OF THEIR PARENTS DO NOT DESERVE CLEMENCY FOR BEING ORPHANS.

Hamburger ,   Hamburg   (06.13.07)
You are right, I noticed it too. It's kinda funny! Very principal typo. :-)))
40. I did notice...
Tali   (06.13.07)
The "not" appears in the Hebrew version (published in the newspaper).
41. A letter to the British academic
Jeff Goldstein ,   Fair Lawn, NJ (USA)   (06.13.07)
Thank you for being blunt, forthright and completely honest in your response to the recent BUCU attempt to unjustly boycott Israeli academics. One would think that with the UK claiming to be a fair, just, and open country for free speech and thought, such an attempt would never gain momentum, but sadly this is wrong. Perhaps if the sponsors of this effort were to see firsthand the truth rather than relying on slanted and biased editorial reporting, they would stop this ill-advised attempted boycott. If anything, Israel is trying to establish peace, not destroy it and by supporting a boycott, this will only add more fuel to an already highly volatile situation.
42. The british academics do not care
alun ,   london uk   (06.13.07)
if any israelis die in fact they are pleased if they die because they are evil and thus hatye anything good that is why your intellectual arguments will have no effect on their evil emotions of hate

newcombe ,   Adelaide   (06.14.07)
ahmed - the difference is that you can publish your message here freely. I doubt we could publish our views in the arabic press. we all repect your views and right to life. my problem is that when your folks go and blow themselves up killing our nation family and friends, we lose our respect for your nations ethics and behavoir, and question your value of human right to life. while I am sure you cant stop it, any more than I can stop stupid brits from playing horses ass, we have a problem here.
45. British boycot of Israeli academics
Susi Rubin ,   Haifa, Israel   (06.17.07)
I suggest that Israelis and Jews stop going to England.
46. British Academia
Roy Randall ,   Cardigan Wales (UK)   (06.22.07)
The British Universities are, and have always been the home ground ofthe 'Loony Left', whose views seem to have little or no base in reality. The only time they represent a danger is when they form our government, like now. As a Jew, I might not like what happens in Israel, but these fools offer no viable alternative scenario, and worse, it seems not to bother them.
47. Boycott
Roy Randall ,   UK   (07.03.07)
Don't worry about the ivory tower our acedemics are occupying, it will not protect them from our Islamic militants, but their education might improve, if not their intelligence.
48. Yair Lapid's column
Fritz G. Cohen ,   West Lafayette IN US   (07.09.07)
My guess is that the British academicians will respond with their cusomary arrogance. After all, they do not have to live with the consequences of their cultivated know nothingness.
49. I am British
Kev ,   London   (08.10.07)
I am British and this article is spot on. I shall be passing this on to my friends who understand the truth of the situation.
50. Well said Rachel, #30
