This rehab idea is just way ahead of its time. Its time will come when we have a Torah-law abiding state of Israel. There is no arguing with what's written in the Torah- gay acts are forbidden! Some are born gay - there is a difference in the brain. Others however become gay through life experience. A man whose first sexual experience was with a man, for whatever reason, may then associate sexuality with their own gender. Or may come to hate men and become more feminine and have a love / hate relationship with men. Not always, but it happens. The second group can many times be reconditioned back to their original natural orientation - if they choose to be, and many will. Those that were born gay, might be able to be conditioned to ACT heterosexual (in the same way a hetero person can become conditioned to ACT gay) but it will never be what they really are and when you force people into the closet in any way, it harms them psychologically. I don't believe that these rabbis understand that to be gay is an emotional / psychological thing, not just a lust for a particular act. If they understood properly, they would think differently. Having said all of that, the act of sex between men is forbidden. To have that orientation is not forbidden however. So someone could be gay and choose not to perform certain acts. Yes that may be frustrating and unfair, but it is the same for many people who for whatever reason cannot express themselves physically, be it a religious agunah or a single person who cannot find the right person to marry or someone trapped in a cold marriage, or someone who is physically unable to have sex but still has the desire.

I lived in Israel for 4 years and I have seen (proportionlly speaking) as many psychologically problematic people there as anywhere else. And I know that some of the well known sects do have their branches in Israel. And I am not even speaking here about the disgusting prostitution and drug dealing that can be seen in Tel Aviv around the filthy Old Central Bus Station. What is realy childish is using gays for justifying such vain illusion about Israel being "different"!

I never claimed that Israel was different, that it was an example of a place without the problems that come with too much progress. Why are you putting words into my mouth? On the contrary, most people here are not very religious and are very Westernized, and in some ways Israeli social problems are worse than those in America or Europe. That's evidence of the very point I was making. If most of the people here hadn't been wrenched away from Judaism in the last few generations, I think things would be very different. Not perfect of course, but much better. By "sects" I assume you're referring to sects of Judaism, but then I'm puzzled when you say "some of the well known sects do have their branches in Israel." MOST of ALL of the sects have their main branches here. By and large the sects of Judaism developed because of our geographical dispersion, and so along with the ingathering of Jews we've had a concentration of sects as well. So? How does that negate my point that people will develop new religions and cults and subcultures to compensate for the decay of their original religions and cultures, that the continual breaking down of rules and boundaries that's called "progress" begins to affect people negatively at some point, and they revolt in different ways?

MK Ze'ev is obviously so disturbed he can only need to be treated by a good psychotherapist. His bigotry and complete ignorance regarding gay people is clear. Perhaps as has been suggested he seek rehab for all his fears regarding how other people love. When he made the "choice" to be straight perhaps he should have informed his wife and family it was a "choice, " and not something inherent in his psyche. Most gay people do not choose to be gay. They just ARE gay. This is why they fight for basic human rights and dignity. If Shas and MK Ze'ev can not grant that, then let's start building the gas chambers again and finish Hitler's Anti-gay solution. Because I know many gay people who would rather die than be forced to deal with religious intolerance and bigotry on this level.

Ze'ev is amazingly ignorant on this subject. I know hundreds of gay people and have never heard a single one say they wanted to enlarge the gay community. Most gay parents I know actually hope their children will grow up straight, if only so they won't have to put up with bigoted attacks from the likes of Mr. Ze'ev. Ze'ev talks of gays exactly the way Hitler spoke about Jews ... they are "destroying our existence", though he naturally doesn't explain how they are doing that. This gentleman is right on target. We have a system here in AZ for Sex offenders.
