1. I dont know
ben ,   singapore   (06.26.07)
but it drives me mad better castrate these criminals who comit rape crime. rabbis or not rapist must be castrated. Very nasty idea but raping is even more uncivilised. But let them put up a good defense in the court before imposing a fair and justified sentense. I would prefer the Parliament would legislate castration and public caning. ben singapore
2. Without orthodox rabbinic license are not considered Rabbis
(06.26.07)
These men are not recognized as rabbis in the religious community. Besides Yedioth Ahronoth, who else identifies them as rabbis?
3. What a joke
Religious Israeli ,   Jerusalem   (06.26.07)
The religious establishment here is almost completely morally bankrupt. If they want to start removing rabbis they should start with Rav Ovadia who is an out and out intolerant racist.
4. Suspend him? So he could do it again?
Allan ,   US   (06.26.07)
What a joke! Lock him up and throw the jail away. Enough with the hypocracy.
5. question for #1
English guy ,   London   (06.26.07)
Do you have a book of retrograde and medieval punishments whose numbers you are ticking off one by one? You seem lately to have an unhealthy obsession with wanting people castrated. You would prefer the "Parliament legislate castration and public caning"... your words. They are the sentiments of a caveman. Sickening. Embarrassing. Medieval. And no doubt you'll find some justification in pirkei avot for your over-exaggerated sense of religiosity.
6. To #1 - catsration forbidden
Rachel ,   Jerusalem   (06.26.07)
You have forgotten castration is totally forbidden by Torah - whether it is done by Jew or non-Jew. Thats why we have so many stray cats.

The religious community does not recognise them as Rabbis ? Wich community are you talking about ? The edah haredit ? They have to shut up , they do not recognise Israel neither .
8. Reason behind Cohen having to marry a virgin
Steve ,   USA   (06.26.07)
B"H There is a reason why a Cohen is restricted to marry a virgin. He is supposed to be a mediator in marriage, so if he were allowed to marry a divorcee, it would make it impossible to fulfill his role as mediator. Now rape is worse than marriage of a divorce, because a rabbi is also an officiator at weddings which stand in direct opposition to rape. In a wedding, the woman gives permission to the man for building a physical relationship. In a rape, that permission is not granted. Therefore one involved in rape has no business officiating weddings. These are two different philosophies entirely incompatible. There are offenses for which even the Cohen leadership was fired, namely those of Aaron's sons when an alien fire was offered. It seems proper to strip such a person of the title if the conviction is accurate, but I am not the authority to make that decision, but rather a servant, so I cannot voice that opinion formally. What I am stating is that this is how it appears to me from my reading of the Torah. The experts have to make the decision.
9. This is a major innovation
Bartley Kulp ,   Safed, Israel   (06.26.07)
This problem (sexual abuse by clergy) in the Orthodox world that has been allowed to metastasize partially stems from a lack of guidelines. There are several cases where Rabbis who had a history of inappropriate behavior were aloud to continue in their profession because the destructi ve assumption that they could have done tshuva. Just like an ex bank robber should NEVER be aloud to work in a profession that requires one to be bondable, someone guilty of sexual misconduct while serving as a Rav should Never be aloud to perform clergical duties again.

14. Solution is the EXCHANGE of titles!
Meir Elazar   (06.27.07)
What do you call a religous leaders who rapes minors? Answer: A Catholic Priest. Just look at all churches having to pay out millions of dollars to the victims. Thank You Father Shmulik Goldberg for we have sinned. That's alright my son. Just a few Hail Miriams, put a nice $20 in my pushke, and it will be okay.
15. Rape
charles ,   petach tikva   (06.27.07)
If someone is guilty of rape he has to be punished . Be he a minister , a lawyer , an ordinary citizen or a Rabbi . This man , a Rabbi , who is considered to be a man of law , who should be an example for the members of his community , certainly . I've read that in past times Rabbis were not condemned because they could have made "tshouva" , and his victim ? And making "tshouva" makes them innocent ?
16. Why ?
ben ,   singapore   (06.27.07)
why is that the society seems to protect the Rapist and further mock the victim of rape ? ben singapore

Dorothy Friend ,   Tel Aviv   (06.27.07)
I remember when the so-called "Polite Rapist" had his sentence cut from 30 years to 10 years by the Great Pardoner, Pres, Hertzog, after he became a "Ba'al (strange word, considering his crimes) Tshuva." No word about his asking forgiveness from his victims mind you...
18. Dear Dorothy
charles ,   petach tikva   (06.27.07)
Thanks for this info . And how many rapists were not condemned at all ? No proofs , no witnesses , she agreed , wanted , provoked and other excuses , are common . For me if a person says "no " it has to be NO , do'nt touch . A person's body is her or his property , and they decide what you may do , or not .
19. About the title Rabbi.
Bartley Kulp ,   Safed, Israel   (06.27.07)
A rabbi with a history of sexual impropriety is a desecration of G-d's name. If he does teshuva, great. That is between him and G-d. If his transgression was with the use of force (mental or physical) he also needs to redress and apologize to the offended party. If he does this, beautiful. This however is between him and the offended parties and may not be for public consumption or his tshuva is meaningless. Even after all is said and done he must never work in a rabbinical position. One reason is that (depending on the act being discussed) their is a high rate of recidivism and he might be a danger to the public. We must give everybody the benefit of the doubt, except in the case of public safety. A second and very big reason why his title must be stripped permanently is that, holding the title of rabbi while possessing a shady history is a desecration of G-d's name

charles ,   petach tikva   (06.27.07)
You gave the religious side , fine . If god wants to pardon him , i can't agree . Rape can't be pardoned , the victim suffers her or his whole life . But there is also a civil court , not religious , and there , tshuva or not , if found guilty he has to be punished .
