1. Wow!
ER ,   Canada   (07.05.07)
Notwithstanding Darfur being a tragic disgrace in which Israel must do its share in providing succor to the victims, Danny builds strong argument for allowing the Moslem and Christian countries the privilege of harboring non-Jewish Sudanese refugees in their own lands. Israel is not in short supply of Jew haters! I’m sure these expatriates would feel much more at home in the UK or some such place where there apparently is no shortage of Mercedes and Jeep automobiles available to immigrants.
2. Author is mistaken
Ben ,   College Park, USA   (07.05.07)
While I sympathize with the author's ordeal in Sudan, he is wrong on the facts. Those that may have mistreated him were, by his own words "Arabs" the refugees from Darfur are black africans. Also, the treck from Ethiopia would not have gone thru Darfur which is in the west of that very large country. That being said, it is not Israel's responsibility to provide a home for every single (non-jewish) refugee.
3. I'm with #1
Schvach   (07.05.07)
The trading places game is a favorite pastime in America. I don't care for it one bit. I think though that Danny Ababa is right in his view that if the world cared many other countries would provide for the victims of Darfur. In Israel I think their descendants may turn out to be anti-Jewish-Israel seditionists.
4. Arabs preying on Africans
Cameron ,   USA   (07.05.07)
Hmm, not exactly '3rd-World solidarity', is it?
5. Thank you Danny for speaking the truth
Tracy W   (07.05.07)
Although you have personal reasons to speak out, you are also doing it because you see this danger looming over Israel and you want to protect your land. More peope should hear your voice. I would like to encourage you to tell your story and your concerns to as many people as possible, particularly those in government. Write to them. Write more columns. Phone in to radio talk shows. People need to hear from someone like you. The Left tried to portray these Sudanese as if they were no different than the Jews of Nazi Europe, in this way appealing to a very sensitive spot in Jewish hearts. But the truth is emerging now. They are nothing but economic migrants with no interest in Israel other than a job or financial assistance. My best wishes to you and I hope you derive as much fulfillment as possible from your life as a Jew in Israel.
6. Very eye opening
Jenny ,   NYC, USA   (07.05.07)
thank you Mr. Ababa
7. Christian world larger - not greater
meir elazar   (07.06.07)
Thank you for you courage to speak out and enlighten us. The only point that I would take issue with in your article is "Christian world is far greater than our tiny piece of land". They may be larger but certainly are not "greater". If we (non-Sudanese) remind ourselves of our history of persecution and we say "NEVER AGAIN", I fully support your right and obligation to teach and tell all of us about the persecution that you suffered so that we may act responsibly and learn the lessons. Finally, I wish you every success and hope that you savor your successes even more knowing what you had to endure to achieve them.
8. Very, very good article!
Ginette ,   Toronto, Canada   (07.06.07)
Kol a kavod Nahum for having the courage to tell it like it is. Besides Israel is such a tiny country...where to put them all? It's funny, they only think of Israel to take refuge in. # 7 I think he really meant larger as size of countries, and not greater. The new pope has so much wealth...why doesn't he take a few thousands refugees to the Vatican...I am going to tell you why: because he is larger not greater. Over and out...I won't give my opinion on the talkbacks for a while, tomorrow I am flying to Israel. See you soon!
9. To BEN #2
EGW ,   vancouver canada   (07.06.07)
BEB- I think what he means is that they are Moslems, and said Arabs because to him they are the same. I wonder what happened to his father and the rest of his family??
10. Danny Ababa
Dara ,   Israel   (07.06.07)
Please write more articles about this subject, it's very important for Israelis to learn about what happened to you. I was truely saddened to hear about what happened to you and your family, I hope that everyone is doing as well as can be. I wish you all of the very best of luck and happiness, I only hope that more people like you make it to Israel safely.
11. Mistaken, very mistaken,
Nada ,   Herzliya Pituach   (07.06.07)
I am sorry to say this, but the author of the article is very mistaken and the comments are just as illigitimate. First of all, these are sudanese refugees. They experience rape, killings every day, no food, nothing to live for. They flee because that is the only thing that is left for them to do. There is no country, no home for them any more. Secondly, I think that the author is mistaken in many ways by presenting his personal experience for forming up a story that is much greater than it really needs to be. Why does every thing bad experienced by an Israeli from a non-jew considered as anti-semitism. For example, the author was in Sudan, a country where unfortunately (even at the time he lived there), was in strife, lacking any basic laws, lacking aid, nothing, just like the rest of sub-saharan Africa. Now, the beatings, the killing or so on that he may faced from the Sudanese citizens were deffinitely not acts of anti-semitism, but rather pure acts of violence. I have lived in Africa myself for 8 years, and I have experienced, several threats to my life, that sound very similar and even more dangerous than what the author has explained. He is using his experience of a un-African, non-Sudanese, probably light-skinned (i don't know how he looks), meaning he stands out as a rich, maybe considered another colonizer (as their mindset works) and living amongst a nation which suffers poverty, lack of nutrition, etc.. Sad to say, but this is the way Africa is, and there is no political, no religious, and no ideological reason behind it. And how about not acting out of vengeance like the author is and trying to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT, please.

13. We've got important points here
Caroline ,   Israel   (07.06.07)
The article revived my own memories, anguishes and griefs some 45 years ago. Within all the controversial information about the "Ethiopian" aliya, the author makes here a very important statement. It somehow goes in parallel with my own thoughts about the latest "Russian" aliya which is composed mainly of the ethnic Rissians (Ukrainians, Bielorussians, etc) who have a very distant link to the Jewish people. In the former USSR, after the Stalin era's ethnic cleansing and collaborating with the Nazis during the WWII, the hostility of the Russians, Ukrainians and other former USSR populations toward the Jews was blatant during the post-war decades. It has not decreased since then in their respective countries. And now when some of them come here to seek the benefits of a genuinely democratic society, they dare to raise their voices criticizing and often openly hating us. This is what we could expect from the Sudanese refugees. Same as the Russians should seek now the asylum at any part of the christian world, the Sudanese can try their luck closer to their own country - Egypt for example - or at any islamic country.

Ram ,   London   (07.06.07)
Ethiopian Jews like like all Ethiopians do. They are also similar in looks to somalis. The author explains the cruel attitude of somalis towards the Ethiopian refugees, not for being of a different colour or wealth but just because they were refugees and especially jewish. Not only has the author expressed his hate for the somalis who made his life miserable of his journey to Israel but he expresses his concern for the ability of such a small state to absorb a people who have proved nasty and are not jewish. If Israel were a much bigger land its absorbption of non Jews would not have been a problem.
16. what puzzles me
Yisraeli   (07.06.07)
is what how and why made them trek all the way to Israel, wouldnt they have heard how "evil" israel is towards arabs, yet they come. im puzzled.
17. They have tried
Nada ,   Herzliya Pituach   (07.06.07)
The Sudanese have tried in other countries but they, with their own will, decided to settle in Israel because of the the security and financial well being the Israel can provide. Secondly, most of the Sudanses fleeing are Christian, so why should an Islamic country be responsible, sorry, but that can't be an argument. Thirdly, you have the experience of the Holocaust and if you say "Never Again", then let's see your efforts in really trying to make that happen, or does the Holocaust outweigh all....
18. to 11
tFighterPilot   (07.06.07)
He stated in the article that he's black. Not that it's needed, as all ethiopians are black. I have yet to meet a white ethipian, though I saw one with blue eyes.
19. One wrong doesn't make a right.
Richard ,   New York, USA   (07.06.07)
The Sudanese were wrong in not helping Ethiopians Jews. And now we Jews, who are suppose to be a light onto the nations, want to act like the Sudanese, in their incorrect behavior? Forget it! The Torah says that we are suppose to forgive others, the same way that Hashem forgives us when we transgress His Mitzvot. We Jews should strive to be better than the Sudanese, not the same.
20. Caroline you are a racist
Vladimir ,   Haifa   (07.06.07)
The Russian aliya isn't composed mainly from ethnic Russians. Moreover Russians contribute greatly to the Israeli economy. Moreover you should check the percents of the Russians in combat units. Caroline we don't want you go back to your f*&^ing english speaknig country!
21. #20 - you are a racist
Caroline ,   Israel   (07.06.07)
In your post I recognize the tone of the Israeli Russian-speaking forums. Still the same one-sided statements without solid arguments. The only difference from the form discussions about the aliya from the African States is the absence of the word "chernozho**ye*. By the way, speaking about the latest Russian aliya I said "some of them" - which you interpret as "all of them". Apparently you do belong to the group I mentioned.
22. There are economic interests behind this infiltration
Marcella   (07.06.07)
Let's face the fact. Even a Haaretz editorial said it a few days ago. The Bedouin have a business based on smuggling and Israel has looked the other way for many years. Furthermore, there are Jewish businesses benefitting from the use of illegal workers. They don't care who they are as long as they can work for substandard wages. These interests, and who knows which other ones, are behind the inertia of the government and its refusal to enact any laws to stop this flow. Not even the fact that the police leaves these people roaming the streets seems to have any effect on the authorities. Why? This does not seem to be the same government that is so quick to react to any Right-wing demonstration. I would be very skeptical of calls appealing to compassion. That is nothing but emotional manipulation. There is plenty of poverty in Israel and there are thousands of homeless people that do not seem to merit any comments on these pages. They don't matter. Only the desperate, willing to work for peanuts seem to have a PR army already in place.
23. Rainbow nation
daniel   (07.06.07)
Black jews, white jews, asian jews, African jews, all that's missing are orange jews. We are truely a rainbow nation
24. Danny Ababa has a point
Brod ,   USA   (07.06.07)
Those Islamist Sudanese 'refugees' that Egypt dumps into Israel must have the financing and logistics to travel and infiltrate Israel by way of Egypt. Israel should deport them back to Sudan where they belong. The real Sudanese refugees are the Christian Darfurians who have been persecuted, raped, slaughtered and whose villages and farms have been destroyed by Sudanese Islamist-Jihadist Janjaweed thugs. The survivors of their atrocities would hardly have the means or the strength to travel to other countries. What the world should do is rid Sudan of its Butcher and Janjaweeds and have a regime change in Sudan led by Sudanese Christians. It is time the Africans stop the expansion of Islamist Jihadism in Africa.
25. Caroline let me quote you
Vladimir ,   Haifa   (07.06.07)
"the latest "Russian" aliya which is composed mainly of the ethnic Rissians". You know what I have a friend who has Jewish father and Russian mother but he is much more Zionist than many of the Israelis. Despite the fact being "Russian" by Israeli law. What do you do in life Caroline? I am an M.Sc. student in Computer Engineering did you mean "that group"?

The comprehension and comments of a text must be based on reading it until the end imstead of pulling out some convenient part of it. So read until the end and try to understand.
27. Danny, I hope you derive some comfort
Andrew ,   Edmonton, Ca   (07.06.07)
from reading these arguments between Russian immigrants and other Jews. If you suffered from ethnic slurs or any problem due to your origin, you must have also witnessed the constant bickering among different Jewish sectors in Israel. The insults fly at the slightest comment. It's not just Black Jews who are targetted, it's everyone against everyone in Israel. It's a miracle the country is still standing....
28. This author needs help
Marlene ,   New York City   (07.07.07)
Whatever his reasoning, the behavior of Israel only validates exactly what happened to this author. I would also add that it doesn't suprise me of Israel's indifference to these refugees since it has complete indifference to the Palestinian refugees who it initially expelled when Israel became a state and whose right of return it has completely ignored. The sad fact is that these people do not possess the proper identity to gain citizenship to Israel. This author from Ethiopia is living in a state where others are denied their right to return who actually come from there. Ironic when you think that many Jews lost their citizenship in Germany during the 1930's because they too did not possess the proper identity. Sadly, history has not changed, only the roles. Why Israel dares to misrepresent itself as some kind of humane society is beyond comprehension and logic.
29. "You are a refugee and I am a master"
Marlene ,   New York City   (07.07.07)
Quoting the author's words, it sounds very much like those who considered themselves the "master race" in Germany at one time ( even though of course Jewish is not a race). But the author has made it clear that he is the supremacy where he is in Israel and others are below him, which is basically the way it is in Israel. I often wonder why people emulate that which they despise so much or why they become exactly like those they despise.
