1. New Orleans is a lost cause
J K ,   NYC, USA   (07.15.07)
All anyone needs to do is pick up the most recent copy of National Geographic and read the lead article. The city is sinking, and the weather is unforgiving. Nature is not on the side of this once great city and all people want to do is throw money at a losing cause. Time to save the parts of town that can be saved and give the rest back up nature.
2. I don't get it
megs ,   uk   (07.15.07)
money to send people to Israel, money to get the Iranian Jews out of Iran, money to move Jews to New Orleans. How about some money to the Holocaust survivors, who are struggling financially?????

One day, sitting on the bayou in a boat, Rene says to his buddy Jean : "If'n I was to sneak to yo house some day when you be fishing and I be making love to yo' wife and she wus gonna have a bebe, would we be related?" Jean thinks for a long minute and slowly drawls: "Rene, mon ami, I ain't too sure about that related, but it certainement would make us even."
6. Jews Urged to Move to New Orleans
Tom Lowe ,   USA   (07.15.07)
You will need $500,000 per family. Then you will need a lot of lawyers to justify the presently illegal racist nature of these 'incentives', which otherwise would be shown by US Courts to be clearly racially discriminatory. By law we do not allow this kind of selective, self-serving racism in the US, and I believe this program will not succeed, even as its sponsors clearly have no regard for US law. I want all Jews to move to California, where we need their professional skills in dealing with a huge underclass. California is the promised land, not Palestine. And finally, if you have to bribe people to go to New Orleans, then it must not be a very nice place to be.

Anyone who tries to persuade a normal person to move to NO on a permanent basis, should be required to do 2 things: 1) take the prospects to the French Quarter during daylight hours and 2) let them experience a group of natives diving into big, metal trays full of crawfish, one of the local delicacies. The sight and sounds of the latter would give them nightmares and make them break out in hives for the rest of their lives just hearing the word, "crawfish." (I'm starting to itch, reading it.) On the other hand, if you want to get a good education at Tulane or the U of NO, party, hear great Jazz, or have an unforgettable wedding, it's the place to go. Just be sure to get the hell out of there when the party/wedding is over, after you graduate and before the next hurricane hits. If you don't, money means nothing, when everything you own disappears in Lake Pontchartrain, shows up in Mississippi in a seriously disassembled heap of rubble and you have no clue what happened to the some of your family.---Been there, done that, have the t-shirt and beads to prove it AND had 'em living with me, while they waited for their houses to show up again. One did, and pieces of the other one are probably working their way across the Bay of Campeche by now.
8. #6 - Babbling Tom is as ignorant ...
Andy ,   ramat hasharon   (07.15.07)
about US Constitutional Law as he is about geography. Private money can be directed to any racial, national, religious or gender group that any non-public organization or community wants. Its public money that can't be spent that way. Now I agree that this program is a stupid idea for the Jewish people, but on its face it is not illegal. And in the nature of a geography lesson - Jews haven't moved to "Palestine" since 1948. Now they come to Israel.
9. from sand to paradise
rj ,   engladn   (07.15.07)
its obvious the only reason new orleans wants Jews to relocate there is becasue Jews have a habit of turning dumps into paradises...can you imaging how long it would take for the blacks or christians to rebuild new orleans...armagedon would have come and gone before it was ever completed to a suitable standard... and anyway who in theri right mind would want to live amoungst the population of new orleans..they loot murder rape and mug even during teh katrina crisis...let new orleans stay in the third world state it always has been...put money into the area and the black population will only steal it or abuse it...
10. That will go over well
Josh   (07.16.07)
Move the Jews into the heart of the bible belt where conspiracy theories swirl about how Jews are bringing the one world order for Satan. It is not bad enough they shoot at resucue workers or are uneducated, lets send a group of Jews into the heart of hell and high water. Think people. Try settling them in Israel.
11. It's not NO, but the surrounding suburbs
RCA ,   USA   (07.16.07)
that are most promising for Jews. Jews in and 'around' New Orleans have been thriving for over a century. Jews in the South, in general, have been one of the best kept secrets. Jewish communities, as well as detached Jews here, have long well been established. This includes Alabama, Mississippi, Louisianna, Tennessee, Georgia and of course, Florida. Though, Florida is losing some of its appeal these days. I am a native New Yorker living in the South for over 2 decades now, and I wouldn't live anywhere else . The South is GREAT ! Jewish communities are scattered throughtout. From Orthodox to Reform to Secular Jews, the South has 'em all. Opportunities abound. From high-tech industries to small businesses, to health care, the South is pro-business. Land, housing and real estate, and of course taxes, are super affordable. Like I said, I wouldn't live anywhere else.
12. To #9 and in general
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.16.07)
Please read the article again. New Orleans is advertised by Jewish agencies as the place to be, not by Blacks or Christians. (tsk, tsk, such prejudice.) Remember, too, that all the looting etc. wouldn’t have made it into the press, had it not been too much out of the ordinary. NO is simply “different.” Geographically, it is slowly sinking deeper and deeper below sea level, something that’s economically simply not worth fixing. Aside from that it’s hot as hell, and the humidity levels, I don’t think, have ever fallen below 90%. Add to that a general attitude of laissez-faire, imported by the French Acadians aka Cajuns, and sooner or later, you talk and think like they do. That’s great, if your ambition in life is to work 5 days, with plenty of energy left over to party hard the other 2. Right or wrong, if you want a little more, NO is not the place to bunk. Oh, anything pertaining to traffic signals is optional most of the time and depends on who has the faster car, only to be completely ignored, if you don’t see anybody coming from another direction. Who knows what you’re missing wherever you’re going, while you wait for that light to change. My daughter graduated from the UofNO, got married down there and had a great time until she expected her first child. That’s when she and hubby packed up and came to Atlanta. As much fun as she had, she didn’t want her kids to grow up thinking that all of life is like NO. Unfortunately, her husband thought the rat race in Atlanta was unfit for humans and after 12 years, they split up very amicably and he went back to NO. He is, however, a good father and even at age 46, he never fails to bring the most important thing to those family celebrations: Boxes full of monstrous fireworks. He and the rest of the kids just have a ball with that stuff, and you don’t know whether to laugh or groan. But let nobody tell you that Peter Pan is a fairy tale. He and his kin are alive and well and living in NO. And if your mother-in-law ever wants to know when you think you might grow up, you can always send her a voodoo doll for her birthday. Bible belt in NO? Now that’s funny. They believe In Saints football, Mardi Gras, fishing on the bayou, crawfish, Jazz, Zydeco and working no more than it takes to afford the aforementioneds. As for the rest of the South, let me ask you this: Have you ever heard of people who can’t wait to retire so that they can move up North????? That simply “ain’t” happening. “The South” is a great place to live. The people are wonderful and most generous, there’s plenty of work of every kind, housing is very affordable, we have some great schools, and it’s not unusual, at all, to see a synagogue right across the street from a church. I think it’s like a mutual threat: “If you don’t preach right, I can always go across the street.” :-) If you click on the link you’ll find 16 Jewish synagogues etc. within less then 10 miles from me, and that’s just in the NW suburbs of Atlanta. http://maps.citysearch.com/map/view/2913179 Now, if we could only keep those Damn’ Yankees and California Fruitloops out of here. Jews are always and very welcome, but those “foreigners,” EWWWWWWWWWWWWW. (Ok, ok Ynet, I’m just kidding about the Yankees and Fruitloops) So, y'all come see us and bring yo Momma 'n 'em, too. Not bad for a former Kraut, huh?
13. Just one more NO tidbit
M. Hartley ,   Atlanta, US   (07.16.07)
They have drive-throughs in NO, where you can get the best frozen Daiquiris or Margaritas to go. Like everywhere else, driving while drinking or having liquor in an open container in one's car is, of course, against the law. That law, however, doesn't say one word about slurping or sucking things through straws. And do be sure to always keep the lid on that cup.....

Southern cities resemble the third world. It is hard to find a person that speaks proper English in Miami. You are lucky to find a person that is willing to speak English in Miami.

i think you mean drive by's (as in shootings) and not as in take-aways and that is typical of a black area that drinks alcohol and drives...you paint new orleans with a tainted brush...tell the truth new orleans is a dump and always has been a dump....if any Jew chose new orleans over moving to Israel must truely not be Jewish at all...the choice is simple the LAND OF MILK AND HONEY or the land of sewers and drugs....no real choice now is there..
17. a worthy cause
david ,   new haven CT   (07.16.07)
even pre-katrina new orleans was clearly "the boonies" from a jewish point of view. but what we need is for there to be strong jewish communities dispersed throughout the country. both for safety (so the iran won't blow us all up) but also because it strengthens the jewish presence. what you really need is for a yeshiva to move down there. bringing in more assimilated jews won't help them one bit.
18. Move to Israel!!
Jack ,   Tel Aviv   (07.16.07)
This just shows the prejudice and incongruence among Jewish organizations. If this happened in Eastern Europe or Latin America, the Jewish Agency would be the first ones there trying to get people to Israel. American Jews feel they are above that. As zionist as most American Jews claim they are, they are nothing but hypocrites in the end.
19. Rj Thanks for telling the truth
MARK ,   USA   (07.16.07)
New Orleans is crime ridden. Violent Crime is Rampant in "The Big Easy" and is more like the "Big House". People go to New Orleans to drink but many also get drunk and mugged.
20. #10 They love blaming the Jews.
Mark ,   USA   (07.16.07)
They are politically correct and blame the "Zionists" or ZioCons. They think that AIPAC is the great Satan.
21. Jews in New Orleans
Chaim ,   NJ   (07.16.07)
Historical note: In the 1860 census, over 50% of the Jews in the U.S. lived in Louisiana, with the majority of those in and around New Orleans.

If you're addressing me about those drive-throughs, no, I am not kidding. I don't know whether or not they're back after Katrina, but they most certainly did have them. I may be off with respect to the exactness of the law, but I know of nobody who ever got busted for driving around with one of those "slurpies." By virtue of daughter's going to school and having lived there for 8 years, hubby and I spent a lot of time in NO and got to know a lot of her school friends, and they all knew exactly where those drive-throughs were. Of course, If they caught/catch you zonked out of your gourd and weaving, they would/will haul you in, regardless how you got to that point. Go to #5 on this link :-) http://www.strumerika.com/2007/06/06/top-10-reasons-why-i-miss-new-orleans-and-why-you-should-book-a-trip-there-now/

Don't judge until you've been there. Oh, there is no crime in Israel? You could have fooled me. Would you like for me to pull up some articles from Ynet's archives? No drugs? No prostitution? No drive-by shootings? Geez, your newspapers must be making up all that stuff. I hate to tell you, but where there are people, you'll have crime. And whether you get killed by a black person, a white person, a Jew or an Arab, dead is dead. Although I, myself, wouldn't want to live in NO, because I'm not that laid back, I have never heard of one person. leave alone a group that included children getting blown up by some asshat wearing a belt loaded with explosives. Oh, and nobody's lobbing at Qassams at anyone, either. So, when you're in a glass house, don't throw rocks :-) All of that aside, I suggest you read who actually recommended that Jews move to NO. It wasn't me.

http://maps.citysearch.com/map/view/2913179 I wonder, why there are so many Jewish synagogues and other community centers within less than 10 miles from me; all in this small, crime-infested area of this third-world, Southern State. Rather than surmise that Jews are gluttons for crime and substandard living, I prefer to assume that you don't know of what the hell you're blathering. Most of all, somebody must not have explained that "bible belt" concept to all the Jewish people around here. It certainly doesn't appear to affect their daily lives. I don't know where or with whom you hang out, but I wouldn't trade Atlanta and its people for anything. Since Miami and W. Palm Beach are run over with multi-million dollar mansions, their owers' reasons for investing so much money in such dumps has to be curiosity for what crime looks like. By the way, have you ever heard of Hell's Kitchen, North Philly aka The Jungle, South-Central LA or The Potrero Annex in San Francisco??? Not a single one of those is in the South. Come to think of it, the blighted areas around the South can't hold a candle to any one of those places. I have spent a lot of time in NYC and Philly, and if their patois is proper English, heaven help us all. Considering that English is my third language and that I learned most of it in the South, all of my contacts must have been English professors. (Yeah, right!) I've done official, German-English translations for a very large bank, I help one of my granddaughters grade English test papers for her class, and now I find out that my English may not be proper by virtue of where I learned it. Well, I'll match my "Southern" English against anybody's. In case you haven't noticed, I took exception to the content of your tb. This being a free country, you are, of course, entitled to spout whatever and no matter how far off the mark it may be. I'll put it more succinctly: Your badmouthing the South pissed me off.
26. Tom Lowe, who called New Orleans "chocolate town"?
Jake   (07.17.07)
It was the mayor himself. I thought you said it is illegal to encourage selective discrimination in the US. But then again, why should we complain that New Orleans is 'chocolate town' when the big Civil Rights guru Jesse Jackson declared New York to be 'Hymey town'?!
27. #15- Mark
RCA ,   USA   (07.17.07)
Your ignorance of the Southern United States is only surpassed by your boldness to express it. It would be better for you to remain silent on this subject, and be 'thought' stupid, than to speak and remove all doubt. Even better that you remain where you are now, this way the opportunities will be shared among those that can recognize them. We know what we have here and what we are looking for, here in Alabama.
28. #25- M. Hartley
RCA ,   USA   (07.17.07)
I just could not have said it any better than you have, to that guy, or any other of these talkbackers who know little of what they are talking about, when it comes to the South. PS- Three languages ? Very, very impressive !
29. #20 Are you kidding
Josh   (07.17.07)
Possibly you didn't see the news when New Orleans flooded. If you asked a passing man on the street what AIPAC is they would say he was the greatist singer that ever live or it is "smokes". Doubt half know who the President is. Besides it is Church talk and fear from the footfalls of the curses that causes them to cling to revelation prophecy. It is this prophecy that scares them and it is their attachment of that prophecy via the US dollar emblem (e pluribis unum-latin for of many one) that causes them to target the "money changers" as the culprit. As most American Christians view Jews as being behind the banking system, and the uneducated know the Jesus story of him overturning the tables of the money changers on the temple. They equate "money is the root of all evil" to being bank owning Jews. One theory puts the Rolthchd as the owner of such bank. So no, it has nothing to do with AIPAC or zionists but rather misdirected fear because G-d keeps blindsiding these pagan (fallen jews that followed Christ) with the curses. But you growing up with a silver spoon mentality wouldn't know about the lower society of America and are so out of touch that you think they know about what bothers an upper middle class person as yourself.
